Description

You aren’t what you think! For teens with negative thinking habits, a licensed psychologist and a health journalist offer cognitive restructuring—a simple and effective cognitive behavioral approach to help you break free from the nine most common negative thinking habits that typically result in feeling sad, worried, angry, and stressed. This workbook offers a powerful technique called cognitive restructuring to help you reframe your thoughts, regulate your emotions, become a more flexible thinker, and stop letting your thoughts define who you are and how you feel. You’ll learn to target the nine specific kinds of negative thinking habits that can cause you to worry or feel bad, such as the I can’t habit, the doom and gloom habit, the all or nothing habit, the jumping to conclusions habit, and more! Each chapter will walk you through simple explanations of each kind of negative thought, and offers real-life examples—as well as the sorts of behaviors, emotions, and bodily sensations that might be expected. You'll also gain an understanding of unhelpful or unrealistic thoughts, how to challenge them, how to replace them with more realistic and helpful thoughts, and an action plan for moving forward.By recognizing these negative thinking habits, you’ll feel more in control and less anxious and sad. Most importantly, you’ll be able to see yourself and the world more clearly. Your thoughts don’t have to define who you are and how you experience life. The transdiagnostic approach in this book will show you how to kick negative thinking habits to the curb for good! This book has been selected as an Association for Behavioral and Cognitive Therapies Self-Help Book Recommendation—an honor bestowed on outstanding self-help books that are consistent with cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) principles and that incorporate scientifically tested strategies for overcoming mental health difficulties. Used alone or in conjunction with therapy, our books offer powerful tools readers can use to jump-start changes in their lives. Read more

  • GREAT for teens, families and clinicians!!
This workbook is a *must* for clinicians and their teen clients, as well as for families who aren't working with a professional. Well organized, accessible and informative, this guide provides valuable explanations and activities that tweens/teens can easily understand, without sounding condescending and without the excessive wordiness so often found in self-help resources. Addressing negative thinking habits can be one of the most valuable -- and challenging! -- issues for teens, and this workbook not only breaks that process down into manageable steps, but also illustrates why the process itself is worth it. Straightforward organization allows adolescents to move through the workbook independently if they choose, and the activities are relevant and thorough without being overly time-consuming. It's also a terrific resource for parents trying to support and connect with their teens, and a wonderful adjunct for therapists looking for effective clinical tools. I applaud Dr. Alvord and Ms. McGrath for creating this gem! ... show more

  • Excellent Book for Graduate Students/Clinicians new to CBT
As a graduate student in a clinical psychology doctoral program, I have found this book extremely helpful not only in my work with clients, but also as a clinician in training. This book provides solid coverage of the cognitive distortions that contribute to negative thinking patterns, as well as a step by step action plan for how to switch these thinking patterns. The examples provided in each chapter have been very relatable to the clients I've used this book with (including adult clients!), but it also includes room for the client to self-reflect and come up with their own examples. I would definitely recommend this book to any clinician interested in learning more about CBT and how to actually implement the skills into sessions. I'd also recommend this book to any adolescent or adult as a self-help book. ... show more

  • Excellent Resource for Teens
As a psychologist in practice for over ten years who specializes in treating teens with anxiety disorders and depression, I know first hand how difficult it is to find resources that are both accurate and readable. This book is great. The authors have done an excellent job of outlining and teaching the tools to help teens understand the thinking traps that they can get caught up in, which can impact mood and anxiety. We know that how we think impacts how we feel, and by changing our thinking to be more positive we can feel less stressed and happier - this book really helps guide teens on how to do this. Highly recommend for teens and parents of teens to read. ... show more

  • Use for teens and adults
Thinking style affects nearly all of us. This bookhas been helpful in my therapy practice in the work i do with teens. The examples are a lityle young and corny, but it’s also effective with adults.

  • Great for Self-Help or Therapist Guided Exercises
This is a wonderful addition to anyone's self-help library. The authors demonstrate a deep understanding of cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), and explain concepts in a developmentally-appropriate manner, without jargon. They help teens understand their thoughts, identify how they are being upset by negative thinking, and provide practical steps on how to break the cycle of self-defeating thoughts. The exercises are poignant and helpful, empowering adolescents to take control of their thoughts and emotions, and take action in a way that maximizes potential success (and cope with less than desirable outcomes). I've used this with my CBT patients, who reported finding it very helpful and down to earth. ... show more

  • Highly Practical Workbook Grounded in Scientific Research
Written by an internationally-recognized expert in the field, Conquer Negative Thinking for Teens is a highly practical workbook that should be read broadly. It is helpful for teens experiencing negative thinking, including those facing stressors, depression, anxiety, anger, and related problems. The book is grounded in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), an approached that has been demonstrated to be helpful in hundreds of scientific studies. Dr. Alvord has skillfully incorporated evidence-based CBT practices into exercises that teens will actually want to do. It is easy to use and accessible to teens and parents alike, and is simultaneously instructive for therapists and child psychiatrists like myself looking for the best ways to mobilize resilience in our patients. ... show more

  • Arrived with writing inside.
Not sure how good the book is as I just received it, but I’m disappointed that I purchased a new book and clearly received a used book.
