Description

Collaborative Disruption is an insider’s account of the relationship between two of the most successful companies on the planet—Walmart and Procter & Gamble—and the transformative impact their collaborative strategy has had on their business for more than thirty years, particularly in the retail industry. Their innovative partnership produced what has come to be known as the “one-company model,” an approach that has fundamentally changed how suppliers and their retail customers interact with each other. Tom Muccio, who led the team at P&G that innovated this concept with Walmart, outlines how the two firms broke through silos, self-interest, short-termism, and suspiciousness to forge a mutually beneficial partnership focused on trust, shared information, and transparency. A masterclass in this model of collaboration that has been key to the success of several of the biggest companies around the world, Collaborative Disruption at its heart is a book about change management and vision. • The retail & CPG shot heard around the world
Format: Paperback
This behind-the-scenes story of the P&G-Walmart collaboration is a fascinating read for anyone involved, or interested in business, especially those on opposing ends of the retail supply chain. Tom Muccio did an amazing job chronicling the interaction, relationships, challenges and frustrations behind the creation of the "one-company" strategy that produced results in which 1+1=3. ... show more

  • Leave your comfort zone for a better world! Leave your comfort zone for a better world!
Format: Paperback
I read this book across two flights back from the West Coast. Admittedly, I am connected to the author through marriage, but we've never met in person. What I can tell you is that Tom captured the spirit of collaboration that was (and in many ways still is) siloed. Two juggernauts, P&G and Walmart, breathing oxygen and speaking English, but in reality on the surface on different planets. What Tom executed is a master class on alliance building. It's not getting the people on the bus, but the right people in the right seats, on the right bus and having the gumption, ego, determination, external support, and fortitude to see it through. Early in the book it;s mentioned that the largest "vendor" of P&G before this exercise was taken was none other than Kmart. Not to say the P&G would be a relic like them in 2025 without the 'Walmart" chapter, but I don't think they'd be where they are today (and I don't think Walmart would be either). A great read. I'm telling the story in my sales capacity with my partners. Three-plus decades later and Tom Muccio is still affecting change (and having a degree in Change Management, I know a thing or two on the subject). If you're trying to get something to click in collaboration, whether it's personal or professional, I highly recommend this book for you. It's two flights, but it might open the door to a whole new world. ... show more

  • Walk The World With Tom
Format: Paperback
My copy of Tom's book arrived at 4 PM on my front porch and the pages were turned until 3 AM the next morning. This is a story that will make your next visit to WalMart more interesting and make you more aware as you push your cart in the aisles to pick up your Crest, Tide and Swiffers. Tom chronicles his time at Proctor and Gamble leading the charge of the evolution and the revolution of retail with the "one company" partnership with WalMart. It is also a story of leadership, told in the down home, straight shooting, and determined style of a man on a mission who found obstacles and resistance to change as opportunities to do what had not been done before. And, a man who knew that whatever was accomplished in success was not only about what was done but who he was with when it happened. The original P&G Team of Nine set up their "skunkworks" in Fayetteville, Arkansas to do significant work that would spread around the world. Tom is very intentional in recognizing all with whom he worked in his company, WalMart and scores of others, knowing that the efforts, energy and enthusiasm of all who participated make the story The Story. ... show more

  • Enjoyable, practical, insightful - a very valuable testimonial
Format: Paperback
A fantastic story about how a retailer and a supplier disrupted, reimagined, reinvented and revolutionized their relationship for the benefit of consumers and the two companies. If we apply the process that Tom describes; focusing on various ways of building trust, coming up with a joint vision, understanding the power of synergies, addressing doubters, implementing disruptive structures, sacrificing boundaries and working passionately towards a better joint future, we will without any doubt win the long term game of adding value to all the participants in a business relation. Great read. ... show more

  • 100% accurate and interesting
Format: Paperback
This book by Tom Muccio gives the inside story on how the relationship was forged between Walmart and P&G--which rewrote the book on how large suppliers and retailers can work work together productively. It is must reading for vendors who work with Walmart, both regarding how the overarching partnership between manufacturers and Walmart was originally formed, as well as for insights into what Walmart considers important in those relationships. It is highly readable. Super informative. ... show more

  • Great for B2B
Format: Kindle
Collaborative Disruption offers a refreshing and practical look at how organizations can unlock value by improving the way they work with partners, suppliers, and customers. One of the most insightful themes in the book is how companies often create unnecessary friction through their own processes and operating models. The examples show how even well-intentioned actions—such as offering discounts or implementing policies meant to improve efficiency—can unintentionally harm both sides of a relationship when systems and incentives are misaligned. The book provides thoughtful frameworks for addressing these challenges, including the concept of multifunctional mirror teams and the idea of approaching partnerships with a “one company” mindset. These approaches help organizations better understand how decisions impact different functions and ultimately strengthen collaboration. Another valuable takeaway is the distinction between policies and principles. Policies are important for consistency and efficiency, but when companies attempt something new or innovative, rigid policies can become obstacles. In those cases, guiding principles and shared objectives can create more effective outcomes. Importantly, the book acknowledges that there is no single model for every relationship. Depending on the situation, organizations may pursue a fully integrated “one company” model, a collaborative partnership focused on mutual value creation, or a more transactional relationship that still benefits both sides. Overall, Collaborative Disruption is a thoughtful and practical read for leaders involved in partnerships, strategy, supply chains, and B2B relationships. It offers useful insights for anyone looking to build stronger, more productive collaborations between organizations. ... show more

  • A Groundbreaking Partnership: Why the Walmart-P&G Story is a Must-Read
Format: Paperback
This book offers invaluable lessons for anyone looking to transform a transactional relationship into a strategic partnership. Whether you’re a lifelong student of leadership or interested in building meaningful, impactful collaborations and strategic partnerships, Collaborative Disruption by Tom Muccio is a must-read. Having had the privilege of working on the original P&G Walmart team since 1989, I was fortunate to work under Tom Muccio and witness the remarkable transformation he discusses in Collaborative Disruption. What began as a simple, transactional supplier-retailer relationship between P&G and Walmart evolved into a revolutionary partnership model that redefined the retail landscape. Facing numerous challenges, Tom built a unique, cross-functional team that bridged cultural gaps, broke traditional business paradigms, and fostered mutual trust and alignment between two giants with distinct operating styles. The typical “win/lose” mentality was replaced with strategic alignment focused on demand creation, operational efficiency, and shopper satisfaction. Working with visionary leaders like Sam Walton, Lee Scott, Mike Duke, Eduardo Solorzano, Lou Pritchett, and John Pepper, we learned the value of humility, courage, persistence, and shared goals. The “one-company model” Tom pioneered became the gold standard for joint business partnerships, setting principles and best practices that continue to shape supplier-retailer collaborations today. The journey was far from easy—at times, it felt like a “Spartan Death Race”—but the resilience of our team and the steadfast commitment of both companies turned the seemingly impossible into reality. The partnership we forged not only fueled the growth of Walmart and P&G but also paved the way for future retail collaboration. Collaborative Disruption proves that with courage, vision, and teamwork, transformational results are possible. ... show more
