Description

"You'll want to read this one with the lights on."―Katee Robert, New York Times bestselling author Cold Eternity is the instant USA Today bestselling space horror from S.A. Barnes, perfect for fans of Severance, where desperation for eternal life leads to a fate worse than death... Halley is on the run from an interplanetary political scandal that has put a huge target on her back. She heads for what seems like the perfect place to lay low: a gigantic space barge storing the cryogenically frozen bodies of Earth’s most fortunate citizens from more than a century ago… The cryo program, created by trillionaire tech genius Zale Winfeld, is long defunct, and the AI hologram "hosts," ghoulishly created in the likeness of Winfeld’s three adult children, are glitchy. The ship feels like a crypt, and the isolation gets to Halley almost immediately. She starts to see figures crawling in the hallways, and there’s a constant scraping, slithering, and rattling echoing in the vents. It’s not long before Halley realizes she may have gotten herself trapped in an even more dangerous situation than the one she was running from…. Also by S.A. • Best birthday present!
Format: Hardcover
I read Dead Silence nearly 3 years ago, and I LOVED it. I mean I totally frickin' LOVED IT. Then about 2 years ago, I was got my hands on a copy of Ghost Station and - surprise, surprise! - it was awesome. So when my birthday rolled around this year, I decided to buy myself a few books. And at the top of the list? This one. Admittedly, I am not much into science fiction, but this author is amazing. I'm even branching into other sci fi because of her. But seriously, all her books are phenomenal. I don't know where she comes up with all this, but for the love of god keep them coming! ... show more

  • To expensive at almost 15 dollars
Format: Kindle
Spoiler alert. The story was ok but more detail about this future world and especially the cryonics part would have helped. Maybe having a scene of one patient being woken up, the disorientation, hope, realization and then being devoured, would have been real horror. The alien was kind of vague, what did it want beside a host? How did it slide into a body without killing its host? Where did it come from? The main character was kind of a yuppie do-gooder who I couldn't relate to. Book was ok but not for 15 bucks. ... show more

  • Great sci-fi horror!
Format: Hardcover
4.5 stars. COLD ETERNITY, the latest Space/Horror novel from author S.A. Barnes, is my favorite one yet! "Halley" is lying low until an interplanetary political scandal cools off. This isn't as easy as it sounds, as everything is electronically monitored in this future. She is able to find what seems like the perfect location--the Elysian Fields; a ship carrying the cryogenically frozen bodies of the wealthiest people, wishing to defy death by "returning" when technology was sufficiently advanced to cure whatever ailed them. After about two centuries, most other ships that tried to capitalize on this venture went out of business, but somehow, the original started up by Zale Winfield was still out there. Through a very sketchy "interview", Halley is brought aboard the ship--surrounded by frozen capsules of people who will likely never be resuscitated--and is tasked with making meaningless "rounds", pressing a "check in" button every few hours. The perfect place for someone who doesn't want to be found to hide out. Except that she begins seeing things she can't explain...things that defy logic. We learn about Halley's past throughout the novel--piece by piece as part of the whole, instead of one giant info dump. Even events from her childhood that had an effect on her situation, to an extent. I feel this was very well integrated, and helps the reader get to understand her motivations and beliefs. The story had some fantastic scenes that I did not see coming, and once begun, the pacing picked up dramatically. Overall, I honestly loved the ideas in this story, the world building, and the other sub-genres of horror that were included. My only reason for the half-star deduction in my rating was the ending--everything was wrapped up too quickly, and with all of the issues taking place, I felt that more time should have been spent there. Recommended. ... show more

  • Loved the setting, enjoyed the protagonist, fast read.
Format: Kindle
The setup for this story with it's graveyard ship among the stars and the runaway caretaker was great. I admit, I had the wrong idea about Karl the whole story which was a nice reveal. Our protagonist's backstory is something of a broken mirror of 2024 US politics which pulled me out of the scifi horror story a bit. That said, Halley was still a character I could understand and empathize with. I do find the afterward a little disappointing. I feel like the actions Halley took in the climax of the story read as growth whereas the very last act feels like a step back. This may just be my reading of the actions. It could be read as "playing by her own rules", but if so, it wasn't related well. Still a solid, fast, & fun read. I'll be checking out another S.A. Barnes story. ... show more

  • A Reading the Paranormal Review
Format: Kindle
No lie, S.A. Barnes gives excellent creeping horror in space. Just so wonderfully creepy. On the run, unable to trust anyone thanks to her previous employer's long reach, Halley grabs onto what seems to be the perfect job - one where she's acting as a caretaker for an outdated cryo barge. She'll be pretty much alone on the ship, which means no one can sneak up on her and take her out of the equation. She'll have time to regroup and figure out what her next steps are. Even before she takes the job, Halley has the "if things look too good to be true" thought, but she's running out of options and time and a person's gotta do what a person's gotta do. Even if it seems a little sketchy. So she takes the job and soon finds herself on a ship of frozen people. While they're technically all dead, they all believed technology would advance and they could be revived. Which means the ship is peopled by wealthy, frozen individuals who have entombed themselves with their wealth for the day they would be brought back. Yeah, it's already kind of creepy before Halley starts seeing something stalking the halls. But she's running on minimal sleep and adrenaline and the other employee on the ship assures her none of the cryo frozen individuals could unfreeze themselves so it's probably just her imagination getting the best of her. Spoiler: It's probably not. Throw in a hyper realistic AI program that seems to know more than it can say and things start getting really weird. Creepy, crawly, and wonderfully atmospheric. *thumbs up* on so many levels. -Kelly @ Reading the Paranormal ... show more

  • A good ride!
Format: Kindle
I like the main character and her backstory. She feels realistic. The author takes an long time to reveal her story. Too long I think, but I wanted to keep reading. When the whole set up is revealed it is intriguing, so wait for it.
