These are true blackout curtains that pass the flashlight test. The back side is black, instead of matching the front color or white. Having a black back side means it absorbs the outside heat instead of reflecting it. The red color one is a bold bright red with a shine to it.

I wanted black colored blackout curtains that I could close as much as possible from the sides with sheers in the middle. I knew that the sheers would still let in a little light, but if the blackout curtains were effective, they would still darken the room enough. The window is large, so it lets in quite a bit of light in the mornings (especially during the summer because the window faces East). These curtains block nearly all the light! Even with the sheers in the middle, the room stays very dark if I pull the blackout curtains closed as much as possible. The fabric is heavy, so you'll need a solid, sturdy curtain rod (especially if you hang more than one pair). But it's also very silky on the front for a very nice look. The rings are high quality and slide well on the curtain rod. I wanted grommets that matched the ones on the sheers as well as the height above the grommets. These were perfect! Be sure to check the measurements posted in the item photos, as those were very helpful for me when deciding these would match well with the other curtains I used. Overall, these are quality made, with nice fabric. They work very well at blocking light and look amazing in the room! ... show more

Oh man, these things REALLY block the sunlight. I needed something for my kid's room, at 8:00 pm you can still see the light sneaking in and he is refusing/or he can't fall asleep. I wake him up early due to our commute so it is important that he gets a good night's sleep and these curtains were a great option. The color is between red and burgundy -- like a really deep red. I was trying to match it to his ladybug/Superman colors but it's a little darker (I don't care, still going to use it). Quality-wise I will say very nice, not your big store junk that falls apart as soon as you pull it out of the bag. They are well made and have heavy material. I have included some pictures but don't be tricked by them; the curtains blocked the light to the point of our glowing stars being visible in the picture -- but it looks super bright due to the camera adjusting the brightness ... show more
