  • Works well
Size: 24 oz
This product helped prevent scratches this spring. I also kept my horse in a lot from the mud so that played a role too. Still, muddy legs didn't cause scratches like usual. I would wash legs, dry them and rub it in well, applying a thick layer. It seems to provide a protective layer and dries up any fungus that starts. He did have a few scratches and this dried them up quickly. Before us using this product, he had to go on an antibiotic with all 4 legs (ankle to coronet) covered in scratches (in the fall). He was also rubbing his tail a lot (wormed regularly) and the hair was becoming a mess. I tried this just to see, rubbed it well into the top of his tail where he was rubbing and so far he has stopped. It is a bit pricy though (I don't see a very large size either). When using it every other day on 4 lower legs it goes quickly. If you use it on smaller areas infrequently it will last a very long time. Great scent too. People at the barn have suggested trying Desitin which is much cheaper and they say works well. ... show more

  • Best stuff for rain rot!
Size: 24 oz
This was a little expensive, but was well worth it! This paste works amazing!

  • Far better than the well-known brands or home remedies
Size: 10 Oz
My horse has a terribly resistant case of rain rot/scratches/greasy heel/dermatitis on her hind legs. The surgeon's shampoo and medication were as effective as smearing peanut butter on it--in short, did nothing for $35. I've tried five different products since then, and this dermatitis just came back stronger. I can clear off the lesions with medicated shampoo, but they returned in 24 hours. In 20 years owning horses in humid Tidewater Virginia, I've never seen a case this bad before. This Coat Defense clay is the only thing I've found that's actually reducing the patches. That poor mare. She showed me how much relief this cooling clay gave her by sighing deeply and visibly relaxing as I rubbed it into the hot spots. The next day, her legs were noticeably cooler and dryer, and there were fewer lesions. You can easily brush out the dried clay. Instead of jerking her legs away from stinging lotions, when I had washed and dried her legs, she saw the jar, planted her legs firmly, and waited for the clay. She welcomes it. Yes, it's pricey, but you actually don't use much. It's very spreadable. I plan to keep this in the med box from now on. Also, a friendly note: the vets say that these itchy rashes are caused either by a fungal infection or a bacterial infection. You won't know which unless a vet cultures the cells. One of the possibilities is a staph infection. Don't even think about treating these rashes without rubber gloves. Humans can and do catch them, and they're hard to treat, especially if you get them in YOUR hair. ... show more

  • Too expensive but it works great
Size: 24 oz
Easy to use and smells okay (horsey boi says it smells too strong but he does like the peppermint smell still). Very good quality but can melt a little if it's warm out. I wish the price was q bit more affordable. You may have to apply it fairly thick sometimes depending on injury and or location of injury. Still, this product is a solid five star. ... show more

  • Donkey's legs are surviving fly season because of Coat Defense
Size: 24 oz
Flies especially like to attack my donkey's legs. He loses the hair of his lower legs and has bloody places. This summer I came across Coat Defense for Horses, and it has made a great deal of difference. A fairly thin coating of the ointment prevents flies from biting, while providing a soothing, healing barrier to the irritated areas. This, combined with EcoVet Horse Fly Spray, has been his regimen this year. I finally feel like I can make a difference in his torment from flies. And over the years I've tried many things. Just to say, the ointment is a bit pricey and the treatment has to be done everyday, but It's worth it to give him some relief. By the way, I know they serve a purpose in the great cycle of life, but I still hate flies. ... show more

  • Works great!
Size: 24 oz
Love how this stuff smells and how easily it goes on. Creates a nice layer and works really well on summer sores which is what I originally tried it for.

  • Still on the fence
Size: 24 oz
This worked very well for some scurfy spots on my horse. To me, it feels like a poultice-Like uptite clay poultice. My senior horse had some hind leg edema, turned out due to respiratory issues. I wanted to see if this would help since I cant use stall bandages. This did not work well for his edema but it did work for other minor-but-annoying skin issues. I purchased the powder & thats ok too-light peppermint scent. When/if I run out would I buy more? If I had to treat scratches or rain rot. We will see when summer hits here in Southeast. Don't have any other experience with it. Might be good to have around-certainly cant hurt!!!! ... show more

  • I don’t believe in miracles, but….
Size: 24 oz
When I first bought this product, I was skeptical. My gypsy has had scratches for years. Every time we think we get them under control, they come back worse than before. We’ve tried everything. Diaper rash cream, athlete’s foot spray, baby powder, MTG, changing her diet, nothing has gotten her over them. I thought this was just going to be an expensive snake oil, but after two days my trainer, barn owner and I are IMPRESSED. Her right hind was awful, always smelled a little off, was always damp and oozing and muddy no matter how often we washed it. Now, it’s practically scratch free!! Doing another round, but I fully believe she will be cleared up by the end of the week. Miracle paste!!! ... show more
