Style: Special Reserve
So much to say on this one. For me, it’s the Pinaud aftershave that seems the most American, and Mid 20th Century in its qualities. Unlike Original Clubman and Lilac-Vegetal, Special Reserve lacks the dominant sweeter, powdery, floral essences & the 19th Century origins. The main scents I discern here are wood, suede, and cinnamon. Cinnamal is on the ingredients list. Reviewers frequently mention the leather and baseball glove bouquet, but I seriously dig the cinnamon-esque quality. It tingles the nostrils a little. It’s a spice, but drier, crisper, and less cloying than a bay rum type spice. Possibly also sense a little of a menthol-ly tobacco essence you get from Alt-Insbruck (if you are familiar with that fragrance) on the drydown. Try too hard to discern that here and you’ll miss it, it’s that minor. For many, wood and leather forward fragrances connote the essence of cowboy and the American West. Due to advertising and our expectations, many do. Clubman Special Reserve doesn’t go there for me. It’s not John Wayne or Eastwood. Something drier and crisper is present in this aftershave that feels more modern. It’s more jet-age than stagecoach. But it’s not the Hefner - jazz on the hi-fi sophisticated fragrance. Clean, but not a Jimmy Stewart Strategic Air Command type clean. It still has a rustic message with a modern envelope. Think of a dude that does cutting-edge his way. IMHO, this fragrance is a Chuck Yeager or Sam Sheppard that played him. People will smell it and the wearer doesn’t care your opinion less you are the lady digging it. Otherwise, save the oxygen. Denzel W. and Smokey Yunick are additional independent type gents that come to mind. The “aftershave cologne” moniker of Special Reserve is interesting. The fragrance itself is drier and a tad more forthright than other Pinauds. In my experience it does not have greater projection or duration than any other aftershave in their line. Others may have a different perception. I use this aftershave professionally and personally. Really like the “fire extinguisher” looking spray bottles Pinaud has recently introduced. These are kind of standard fare now in the Barber profession. Other companies use them for aftershaves marketed to Barbers. For this, I give a lot of props to Pinaud Clubman overall. Sometimes revered old brands like this are owned by large Pharma companies that simply let them languish and die with no product development. Example: Mennen was acquired by Colgate in ‘92, and hasn’t notably expanded any offerings. Williams shaving soap was another brand lost in a big Pharma shuffle and ultimately cancelled. I don’t know all the details. Pinaud Clubman has been coming out with a lot to help consumers and pros level up their grooming and styling. Some are packaging enhancements, and some are new fragrances and talc style powders. I believe one doesn’t need to spend a lot to make themselves or their clients feel and smell good. Some criticisms get directed at this classic stuff saying Clubman’s line is “dated” or the products have “old man” smell. I feel like the reason these products have stood the test of time is because they are objectively quite good and affordable. However, they don’t seek to project image with a designers name and commercials with a aspirational euro style sophistication. Some seek that and there are products that offer that. Clubman doesn’t play that game. Clubman Special Reserve plays quite well with a lot of current wet-shaving products I’ve used. Examples: Sandalwood and Oud soaps/creams by Proraso, TOBS, Wholly Kaw. If you like the energy of Stirling Soap British Leather or PAA’s John Frum, Clubman Special Reserve is in your wheelhouse. Highly Recommended as an aftershave with a fragrance that doesn’t disappoint. I like having a selection of fragrances for myself and clients. This is heavier but can play year round. The companion talc style powder in the Special Reserve fragrance is similar to the aftershave but not a carbon copy. I feel the aforementioned cinnamon-esque essence is slightly more noticeable there in the powder but with a bit more of a soapy, powdery after tone than the leather-like vibe in the aftershave. To be expected. It is a powder after all. They pair quite well and can enhance your grooming, wet-shaving, or client experience & are a great value. It’s The Right Stuff for this reviewer. Your milage may vary.

OK the Scent of the Special Reserve is Ridiculous good. The soothing effect after shave is calming. This beautiful manly scent does last a long time. For the current price you get an top notch value. The spray makes this cologne a hit. This is the last brand of After Shave and Cologne I will purchase from this date forward. I am getting some mentions while wearing this. This cologne is for every man regardless of age. It just smells that good.

Honestly, this is probably something I should've rated three stars, but I want to be open minded the reason why I took one star away is because the fact that it's like a weird spray bottle while it's kind of unique is not really practical. I'm not a fan of it, but I'm not necessarily against it either. If it had a better smell, then I would think it's kind of cool because you get so much with it. Not that it has a bad smell at all. It's just not as good as what I usually use and when you have a bottle like this that doesn't really fit in your medicine cabinet or… It's just kind of a gimmicky bottle and if it's gonna be gummy key, it needs to have a really really strong, nice overwhelmingly good scent and this one just it doesn't really match what I usually use so I was gonna take two stars away, but I decided to be open-minded other people may like the smell more than me and it is a pleasant smell by all means it's just not better than mine in my opinion So I only took one star away and that's basically because of the bottle and the fact that the scent does not last very long to me. I like candles that have a lot of throw and I like cologne that will create an ambience, but not necessarily an impact. This is definitely creates an ambience without making too much of an impact and I really do like that, but it's just not nearly enough of an ambience in my opinion. Maybe I'm being overly critical, which is why I didn't take more than one star away. I just didn't feel comfortable enough to justify giving them only three stars. I think I'm pretty accurate when I say four stars and that means if you're looking for a unique after shave, I'm gonna recommend it. I'm happy to have it, but I'm not sure I would purchase another bottle. At the moment, that's how I feel about it but if I change my mind, I promise I'll come back and update this review. And as far as the scent, it definitely has a manly scent. It's a smooth type of scent. I'm terrible at describing things like "undertones" or whatever it is people talk about with colognes and wines, and all that I'm terrible at it. But I can tell you that this has a pleasant smell. It just doesn't match what I usually use and I'm not trying to mention the other brand either. I'm just saying this is very pleasant.
