Description
During a long and illustrious career Vic Willoughby has been both an amateur and a professional motorcycle racer, both a freelance and a staff journalist, and a renowned author of books on both racing and road-going motorcycles. It was mainly during his 18 years as Technical Editor of the magazine Motor Cycle that he carried out a series of in-depth analyses of motorcycle engines of the period, which formed the basis of feature articles widely acclaimed for their perception and comprehensiveness. In this his latest book he has drawn extensively on his earlier material, as well as that of some of his colleagues whilst on similar missions of technical analysis, in order to reappraise 20 designs of outstanding merit, engines which in various ways have provided milestones in motorcycle engineering. In doing so, he has revisited where possible some of the designers and engineers involved, inviting them to reassess with him the quality of their work with the benefit of hindsight. Would they have done the job the same way today if presented with a clean sheet of paper? The result is a fascinating book for the motorcycle enthusiast and the engineering student or expert alike, one which will deserve a permanent place on the bookshelf as an enjoyable read and as an important work of reference. Note: The word Classic in the title of this book does not signify restriction to any specific period, such as the late 1950s to the late 1960s. In relation to the designs discussed, the word is used in its literal sense to imply engines of outstanding merit --whether In concept, achievement or potential -- regardless of their time. The 20 engines selected for this volume and listed on the back cover span half a century and five nationalities.. Read more
