  • Mostly the standards, brilliantly performed
These days, I tend to prefer albums that go beyond just the obvious tracks, but I kept hearing from a variety of sources how good this album was. I eventually decided to buy it when I learned that Collin sang all the songs full length, including verses that are frequently omitted. I can confirm that Collin sings all the songs brilliantly and that the version of White Christmas here includes the first verse setting the scene in Beverley Hills, although I note that there`s an instrumental break between that verse and the rest of the song. It would therefore be easy for a suitably skilled engineer to edit that verse out and just use the standard song on a compilation, though I don`t know if that`s ever happened. I hope not. If there are other songs that include extra lyrics, I don't know as I haven't studied it closely enough. However, there are plenty of other delights in this fine album. The only song that I'd never heard before, It could happen again, is an original song that begins with a Johnny Cash narration about a wartime Christmas truce, after which Collin sings the song expressing the hope that it could happen again. Wishful thinking, maybe, but a nice sentiment and let's hope that it proves correct. Of the other songs here, the least frequently recorded is surely Angels we have heard on high. The other songs (The Christmas song, I'll be home for Christmas, The first Noel, Away in a manger, Winter wonderland, Little drummer boy, Silent night, O holy night) have, like the aforementioned White Christmas, been recorded frequently and will continue to be recorded by subsequent generations, because they are great songs and the public love them. Two of them (Away in a manger, Silent night) feature the voice of his daughter Brittany as a duet partner and very good she sounds too. There's also an instrumental reprise of The first Noel. Yes, I wish that Collin had opted for a slightly more imaginative track selection, but a lot of people just want to hear familiar songs. Within that framework, Collin has provided sufficient variation, with the extra lyrics, the duet partner and the one original song, to appeal to everybody who enjoys easy listening Christmas music - and Collin's versions of the familiar songs are as good as anybody else's out there. ... show more

  • Christmas songs the way they should be sung
Most Christmas albums draw too much attention to the performer -- either, "Listen to how creative my arrangements are" or, "Listen to my singing technique". Not this one. On Collin's album, it's all about the songs. Collin's voice and singing style are perfect for Christmas music. Most of the songs are handled very simply and gently, with a kind of honesty. Collin just might be the only male singer who can pull off the "stay by my cradle" line in "Away in a Manger" without sounding ridiculous. (This song, along with "Silent Night", is performed with his daughter.) "Angels We Have Heard On High" and "O Holy Night" start off simple and then soar. After listening to "O Holy Night", the only proper response seems to be to sit there quietly for a few moments. Just stunning. I must, however, mention that this album has one flaw. After listening to it, you may have a hard time buying any other Christmas albums! ... show more

  • One of my favorite Christmas albums
This is one of my families favorite Christmas albums. I have had to replace it 3 times because it has gotten all scratched up carrying it back and forth from house to car to other car. This time it has been saved to a computer so I won't have to replace it again! The only down side is the lack of the title song The Gift. I love this song but it is not included on this album and I'm not sure why. Collin Raye's version of O Holy Night is the best I have heard. All of the tracks but one are traditional Christmas songs. The track that is not traditional starts out with Johnny Cash giving a short explanation of Christmas Eve on the battlefield. If you are looking for a great Christmas album that captures Christmas, this is it. ... show more

  • Another amazing CD by my favorite artist!
I am a HUGE fan of Collin Raye and highly recommend that you add this CD to your Christmas collection. He performs two songs with his daughter: Away in a Manger and Silent Night. His rendition of O Holy Night is my absolute favorite of all...such an amazing voice. He performs Winter Wonderland with the Beach Boys...great rendition of this song as well. I actually have 2 copies of this one, one in my car and the other in my CD player at home! ... show more

  • Beautiful voice
I had never heard of this singer, but I listed to the previews and decided to give him a try. I am glad that I did. He has a beautiful voice, and sings with great warmth and feeling all the Christmas songs I love. This will definitely be one of the CDs I play every year for the holidays.
