  • a good illustrated history of the chandelier
This is a good illustrated history book on the chandelier. The first chapter is about the earliest candlelit form the second is about brass chandeliers the third is about venetian glass chandelier the fourth is about the 18th and 19th century very famous crystal chandelier the last two are not much to talk about . the last chapter is all modern lighting . I like the chapter on the 18th and 19th century chandelier the very famous and popular crystal chandeliers. I also feel about the book that unless the pictures were printed on the diagonal they would not fit into the page. The pictures of the chandeliers are big and clear and close up so to fit them in they had to be printed on the diagonal. The color is very good . I like the chapter on the 18th and 19th century the best . that particular chapter should be given 5 stars alone. A good close up look at crystal chandelier by themselves. A good look to at the original form of chandeliers --- candlelit forms from the middle ages perhaps? The crystal chandeliers are lovely simply lovely. Even the ones printed on the diagonal are lovely you can see that they are very big and the close up detail. and very very clear. Now some of the pictures on the crystal one are straight not all are on the diagonal. This are very nice as well. The White House is in the book well that bit is straight. The crystal chandeliers above the dining table at Versailles is straight as well .Very impressive. One should not be discouraged from buying the book because it is worth the cash! I am the proud owner of it. By Elizabeth ... show more

  • Let there be light...
Quite a good book on chandeliers. It is interesting that any book that covers English decorative arts often shortchanges French decorative arts, and vice-versa. The glory of the gilt or silvered bronze and crystal French chandeliers are given much less attention here, but otherwise the book is quite comprehensive. Lovely, evocative shots of of fixtures in situ. ... show more

  • Very good book on Chandeliers.
This is one of the better books out there on Chandeliers. The only way you will find one better is to pay at least $50.00 and then good luck finding available copies of the ones out there. I have done a lot of research on available books on the history of Chandeliers and the selection is very limited. For the money, this is the best one so far. It has many beautiful pictures and takes you through the evolution of the chandelier from the past to the present. It would also make a nice coffee book table. Eileen ... show more

  • Look before you buy!
The price of this book was great. I wish I had gone to the library first to look at it. All the pictures (except one or two), were taken at an angle! Drives me crazy!

  • Creative Possibilities - Straight Up Please
Elizabeth Hilliard is at her best when dealing with the creative possibilities that chandeliers bring to interior design. She does well in describing the recent renaissance in decorating that follows from a new freedom to break the rules of traditional design periods. As she writes, "Today decorating is about choice. Gone are the style police, bent on telling us that something or other will or won't do. Instead, we can choose for ourselves, opting for the extremes of severe minimalism or flamboyant opulence, or indeed anything in between". I particularly liked the images that depict the unexpected eclecticism that this freedom affords. For instance, Hilliard describes the use of an ornate Versailles style chandelier in a modern kitchen as follows: "A glamorous Schonbek chandelier hung low over a simple kitchen table provides a study in contrasts: remove it, and the room loses far more than merely a source of light". Unfortunately, most of the text is devoted to a rather dry and somewhat incomplete history of chandeliers. An exception is the chapter dealing with Murano and the rise of the Venetian tradition, which conveys the romance and intrigue that accompanied the development of crystal chandeliers in that part of the world. One final note; while the pictures are indeed gorgeous, the orientation of a significant number of them onto the diagonal is distracting. This design decision might have been appropriate for a subject lacking in visual interest - clearly not the case with the beautiful chandeliers featured in this book. ... show more

  • Let it Shine!
This is an extraordinary book on a rather mundane topic. Kudos to the author for all her excellent research and fabulous photographs. Its a special reference book and perfect for sharing with friends. It sits atop my coffee table and everyone loves it as well.
