  • Pretty good for the money
Style: 76 AZ Configuration: Telescope Only
I’m brand new to Astro-gazing. I had been trying to use my spotter scope. This is Way better. The pictures are taken from a suburban setting, inside my house, through a closed window, using my iPhone and the $20 phone mount they sell here. Really good shot of the moon, and a barely visible Saturn and its rings. I will say, the iPhone pictures are not as good as what you see when looking through it. My complaints: 1)biggest is the tripod mount. It’s fidgety. Like, you look at the moon and don’t really see it moving in the sky, but when you’re trying to put the scope right on it and it takes you more than a minute to do it, it’s already moving out of frame. 2) the tripod. It has an accessory shelf to hold lenses, etc. which is nice, but you can’t collapse the tripod without taking the shelf off, which means putting the two lenses and iPhone mount somewhere else… if you’re setting up in a field for a couple hours, it’s fine. But an idiot like me? Running around my house to different rooms and gazing out the windows? It’s a pain. 3) the red dot spotting scope was broke on arrival, but Amazon fixed that. Overall I’m happy with the scope. I’ll probably buy a bigger better one, but this one informed my next decision for sure. ... show more

  • An honest scope in the 3 inch class...
Style: 76 AZ Configuration: Telescope Only
Always move up incrementally and reflect on the journey as you move to a larger telescope. Astro pictures do not do justice to being there with a trained eye. The clutch action on this mount does well and its simplicity is preferred by this reviewer over some clunky german equatorial. The market for 3 inch reflector here on Amazon will reveal 2 models from Celestron. The pricier one has a good slewable camera type head, good 20mm eyepiece, good focuser, optimized secondary mirror, springs on the primary mirror mount, essentially a better design. I will take this to the boonies, check out some galaxies and upgrade the final score. Remember, Galileo had only a rough 50mm lens scope, but he applied careful observation and was outspoken in intellectual and didactic forums. When you buy a Newtonian, you buy something that takes a little patience, but looking at the zenith straight into the cosmos will be easier than on your knees. Under country skies in central Oklahoma, if you can at least see the milkyway down through Sagittarius. My goal was to present a professional review here of the scope: Galaxies in Leo and Virgo were a little dim, but improvement might be had from an absolutely remote site. M-27 was grand, M-97 could be found, viewing the ' eyes ', needed more aperture, but M-57 at 230x with a 3x Barlow and a 9mm Nagler, was no problem seeing the doughnut profile. I will make sure to attach the laser finder next time. One more comment: The Leo triplet was viewed, with that extra NGC galaxy. The one that Charles Messier missed. Caroline's galaxy was easy and Ngc288 was right there close so two for one. Reverse the handle position to obtain zenith position. This aperture, and this format, (Newtonian reflector 700mm fl), can take you more places than most others. ... show more

  • Great beginner telescope if...
Style: 76 AZ Configuration: Telescope Only
The media could not be loaded. The AZ L76 is a good beginner telescope if: 1. You get it for less than full price (at around $150 you can get better) 2. You are interested in planets not in DSOs (deep space objects are a little too dim with this aperture) 3. You have access to a lawn (any hard surface will make it hard to stabilize the tripod = too much vibration for a good observation) 4. You use it gently and don't move it around a lot so it doesn't need collimation often I enjoyed having it, I hope you do too. I used the 20mm and 10mm eyepieces that came with it (very decent) but I also used 3x Barlow for higher magnification. When seeing is good, I could go as high as x250 and enjoy a bird's eye view of the moon. ... show more

  • A whole new world!
Style: 70 AZ Configuration: Telescope Only
Unreal. I've never used a telescope before and I got this for my birthday. I looked around and saw all the ya's and na's on telescopes like this. "Don't buy cheap, the mount sucks, the tripod sucks, the way you move it sucks (ALT/AZ), etc." But I also saw some really good reviews saying how easy it was to use and how good the optics are and how you don't have to collimate it. So I pulled the trigger and I COULD NOT BE HAPPIER with this telescope. Seriously I had it put together in 5 minutes. I had two surgeries this year on my abdomen so I'm not supposed to lift much and I can't do much physical labor and this was easy for me to put together and carry. It's incredibly light and mobile and a complete piece of cake to put together. then I took it outside and started using it. All I can say is... WOW. The optics are amazing and I started by looking at a mountain several miles away and then the horizon after the sun set. I could clearly see people many miles away and all kinds of things with minimal focusing. But then the sky went dark... That's when things got really cool. I've never seen stars through a telescope and this blew me away. I looked at several stars that you couldn't see with the naked eye and thought that was awesome. I watched planes fly overhead and was having fun and then I saw Saturn. That just blew my mind. I had never seen the rings in reality. They were so clear that the moment I saw that start in my view I knew exactly what it was. It was just such a cool thing for a brand new astronomer. For me, this telescope is totally good for my purposes. It was the right price and I am having a blast discovering the skies over my head. I don't see what there is to complain about unless you are like a professional astronomer. I found the mount great, the tripod fine and the movement totally easy and good to use. I mean you can always find shortcomings with stuff if you look for it. But for the price, this telescope is worth every penny. Bravo Celestron!! PS- I wasn't sure if I would like astronomy before I got this and went back and forth on whether or not to even try it and all I can say is this Is a total blast. I'm a hunter/fisher/sports guy so I wasn't sure if I would like this. It gets me out of the house and is a world I've never seen before. I'm going to take it camping and hunting. 2 thumbs way up! ... show more
