  • You don't need back protection...until you do
Size: Large-X-Large
Yeah, I got fairly lucky skiing in the trees last week. Face planted at speed, and flipped side ways into a tree. Knocked the wind out of me, and I'm sitting here 8 days later still wondering if I didn't crack a couple of ribs in my back. Anyway, as an aging 14 yr old, trapped in a 56 yr old body, it's occurred to me that perhaps when skiing, riding the motorcycles or quad, or doing anything where speed and lack of control seem to be the goal...maybe I should find a little bit of armor. I've had my leather for decades. It has shoulder and elbow hard pads, and some padding on back, but NOTHING like this thing offers, and as others have said, this thing will slide right into my jacket, in that scenario. It's going to be easy enough to wear under my ski jacket too....I'm thankful for the opportunity to try something and avoid a spinal injury, since I'm not likely to get any smarter. Comfortable and inexpensive for what it is. 6' 220 # lg/XL fit well. ... show more

  • This is REALLY NICE and it even filled a need I didn't know I had.
Size: Large-X-Large
I was a bit skeptical when ordering this, I wasn't convinced from the photos that it would be comfortable but I figured I'd give it a try. So before I continue with the review let me give you the bad news.... no I did not jump off a motorcycle at 60mph to see how well it would protect my back, so I can't give you THAT feedback ;) That said I did try dropping to the floor with and without and with was WAY more comfortable. I live in south florida so I was already able to test it in 3 different seasons (that's how much our temperatures vary this time of the year). I tested it wearing only a T-Shirt as this is how I plan on using it... I have a jacket with full protection for when I want that... but for instance for riding to the beach I would NOT wear the jacket but I would for sure wear this. In "Summer" (around 85 F) it was super comfortable, I did not notice additional sweating and the feel was like having a zero weight backpack on. In "Spring" (around 75 F) it was equally comfortable. "Fall (around 67 F) is where I found the value I did not anticipate. I don't enjoy riding a bike in a t-shirt at anything under about 75F so I only subjected myself to it to test the product. OMG... I had not realized that there are specific parts of my torso that dislike the cold. Those happen to be most of my back, especially my lower back, and the lower part of my abdomen. I had never put thought into it... I knew that I don't really feel cold in arms and legs until the temp is under 50 but I had not put any thought into whether say my chest is more temp resistant than my lower back. IT IS. Anyway... this darn thing happens to just specifically cover the portions of my torso that are more susceptible to cold. So riding with this thing on at 67F was equally as comfortable as riding without it at 75F. No that's not a HUGE thing... but hey, comfort is comfrort and if it's also making me safer.... I call it a win. Not terribly important to me but I asked my wife, my daughter, my three sons and two of my wife's girlfriends who happened to be there what they thought of the appearance of the thing and the women all said it looked fine, and the boys said it looked badass. I'm very happy I have this now and I will FOR SURE be using it daily. One thing I will say I'm concerned about is that it uses VELCRO for the closure. Velcro in my experience has less longevity than other options so we shall see. On the other hand the product is inexpensive enough that if it lasted 2 years I'd be ok buying a new one on that schedule. And there's no real reason to assume it won't last longer. If I change my mind I'll look for the review and update it. ... show more

  • Good slim protection but hard plastic
Size: Small-Medium
Good back protection while being less bulky than a jacket. With hot weather riding wearing a full jacket can get really stuffy, this helps keep me more protected while riding than having no riding jacket while still allowing the freedom of movement and wind. The protector looks good on the back which is also a plus. It is made of a hard plastic, I thought it would be a rubberish material as some of the protectors in jackets are but nope. That part sucks a little because it gravely reduces its portability. The padding under the harder plastic is not thick, more of a breathable mesh/slim foam padding which leads me to think it might hurt during a fall. Have not crashed or fallen with this on and hopefully never will but it’s a good peace of mind knowing I have a little more protection if I do go down. Overall worth the investment. ... show more

  • Just buy it while you can. It's a good system and explained below. Just buy it while you can. It's a good system and explained below.
Size: Large-X-Large
If you’re reading this and attempting to decide whether or not to purchase, I’m going to lead in with just buy it! Here’s why: It’s one of those unsung things that if and when you need it, you’ll be ecstatic about your choice. And this one is an excellent value! I adore purposeful and well-designed engineering, and this back protector was designed with purposeful intent. The construction materials are excellent and generously applied. The manufacturer did not cut corners but instead focused on utility. I’ve been in the motorcycle’s saddle for over three and a half decades and accumulated over 537,000 miles on two wheels, and during this duration I’ve involuntarily dismounted twice. The thing we riders know but seldom truly appreciate is just how hard and unforgiving the ground actually is until you're up close and really personal with it. It’s in moments like that when Level 2 armor is a cherished friend. The build: • It’s level 2. This is one of the better street cycling armor ratings available. • It provides full back protection, from the coccyx to the brain stem, with the thickest portions in their logical placements. The thickest element measures 12.5 mm. • It’s light considering its job. The L/XL version only weighs 689 g. • It’s a true-to-size fit. If you normally wear a large, buy the large. I am 5’10” and weigh 180 lbs. and it fits sublimely. I vacillated between whether I should order the medium but am glad I chose the large/extra large option. • The shoulder straps possess a high degree of adjustability. • Both the shoulder straps and waist belt are removable and replaceable. • The system is actually convertible. The shoulder straps and waist belt are removable, allowing the wearer to insert the protector into the armor pocket of their motorcycle jacket. • The design has extensive venting. The mesh back liner is comfortable, well secured, and substantially perforated. Additionally, the protector’s framing lattice is honeycombed. Air moves quite freely throughout the system. Note, this also helps with keeping the protector cleaner and less odoriferous from sweat buildups. • The overall construction is excellent. From stitching to reinforcement elements to material selection, the entire apparatus is top-notch. Cons: There really isn’t any easy way to get in and out of the armor. You either have to writhe your way into the shoulder straps, which definitely stresses the material, or have someone assist by buckling you in. The waist belt is simple once the shoulder straps are secured. And of course, reverse the action for removal. Nonetheless, wiggling and writhing aside, this is definitely part of a system that is smart. Additionally, if you live in a hot and/or humid area and are looking for another way to layer, this is perhaps a good starting base that might eventually allow shedding the jacket. The system only needs additional shoulder and forearm/elbow armor, and you’ve got the basic framework minus the leather skinning. In conclusion, I feel the manufacturer has done well. I am very particular about my motorcycling safety gear, and this product fulfills some pretty specific expectations. And consequently, I feel comfortable donning this regularly. Of course, opinions vary. And you must examine what features are important for you. But I feel this is definitely worth the investment. ... show more

  • Got it for long boarding to protect from scraping and spine injury (reduction) Got it for long boarding to protect from scraping and spine injury (reduction)

I chose this free Vine item because my teenager is an avid long boarder and has recently biffed and fell on the cement when bombing a hill. I told him to wear this from now on under his sweatshirt so that if he falls on his back again, he’ll have a little more protection. It adjusts really well to accommodate most heights it seems. It has a nice hex design but he won’t wear it on the outside of clothing, which I’m fine with. I don’t think it will protect him from a really bad fall, but it will protect his spine from curbs and falling flat on the hard road. Doesn’t protect the tail bone but will protect the skin on his back from dragging at high speeds. In conjunction with a a helmet, this gives me some price of mind. It’s meant for dirt biking, but he goes really fast down hills and you never know. We’ll see how the breathability is when the weather gets hotter. Otherwise, I think this is well made and hopefully won’t be needed when he longboards, but there JIC. Cheers! ... show more

  • Go for the larger size if you want more spine coverage. Worth it for skiing as well! Go for the larger size if you want more spine coverage. Worth it for skiing as well!
Size: Small-Medium
Nice CE Level 2 back protector. I compared it to my old A-Stars one, and it's quite an upgrade. The honeycomb pattern will do better at dispersing energy, as they are all connected and will distribute impacts. Compare that to my old one, where it's basically large sections of plastic, and not much energy transfer going on between them. The Duhan is very comfortable, and breathable. You see the gaps where the air can pass through the mesh. You can stand up straight, or hunch over your bike, and it molds to your back real nice. The shoulder straps are adjustable and also pivot on swivels. Though I'm not sure it's really necessary if it's under a jacket. My old A-Stars one only has the waist strap, and it stayed in place just fine. That said, the straps don't feel intrusive at all. I ordered the Small/Medium that says 20.5" in length. In reality, I measured it at 19.5". I will say though, it doesn't quite provide FULL FULL coverage support from base of skull to coccyx. More like top of shoulder to top of hip bones, and less so if you're hunched over. If you want closer to actual full coverage, opt for the larger size. Anyway, I've since given up motorcycling, and have found a new use for these back protectors: taking my kids skiing. It's scary how many jerry's are out there who are out of control. Just like motorcycling, it's not so much whether you have the skill...it's the others around you that you have to worry about crashing into you. When you hear so many horror stories of people getting ran into on the slopes, I'd say the value of these back protectors is WAY cheaper in terms of money and time recovery than a trip to the hospital. ... show more

  • Fits well and has very good ventilation
Size: Large-X-Large
I am very happy with this back protector! I got this mainly for motorcycle and scooter riding and for those uses it works great! The fit is nearly perfect, I used the sizing chart in the description to determine what size to get and overall that worked out well. I am on the skinnier side of the waist measurement and it is very close to being unusable due to Velcro strap not being short enough. This is surprising well ventilated and stays cool on hot humid days. My biggest concern was venting and getting good airflow and even on super hot days it is comfortable. I really like that this can be worn under various outer garments and is usable on road and off road. Overall, I am very impressed by the build quality, comfort and versatility of this back protector! Highly recommended. ... show more
