  • A fun read
Part farming sim part dating sim with a some adventure to make it challenging. You won't find RPG elements such as leveling or a focus on stat building and gaining skills. This books follows a city boy turned farmer working to restore a farm he inherited, while trying to find love and someone with whom to share his life and farm. ... show more

  • Not Farmville. Well, not exactly.
City boy Jason got lucky and inherited his uncle's farm. The problem is the farm is beat up and neglected. It is going to take a lot of work, and the help of his friends, to get the farm in shape again. At times the story seems like one of those Japanese dating sims. Jason has his farm, but he's lonely and looking for love. His farm, and his commitment to the community, both grow as Jason courts the eligible ladies of Summer Shandy. ... show more

  • Makes a farming sim world interesting
The author of this book clearly has played or watched other play games like Stardew Valley or Harvest Moon. Our main character has discovered that he has inherited a farm once owned by his great-uncle and decides to go see the farm for himself. Every chapter of this book is a new day and it starts with a computer-like announcement of the day, the expected weather and a bit about how many actions the hero has available. Of course normally the actions are not an issue. He starts small and builds over time with a good portion of his income quickly being reinvested as he acquires the tools he needs. There is some conflict as the farmland is infested with monsters that are mostly annoyances, but which can destroy his crops if not handled properly, something that takes most of the book to completely accomplish. And there are women in the town who the hero interacts with, plus the local rancher who is both a boon and a bane to our hero with his well-meaning but sometimes ill-advised help and advice. This was a surprisingly fun tale. It took a simple premise and forged an interesting world around the idea of a young man farming in a world where magic, monsters and limited actions come together. ... show more

  • Sweet and fun live action RPG from a farmer’s POV
I bought this after Beware of Chicken because I wanted more of the same positively flavored, day-to-day farming story. I enjoyed it very much for the easy read and positive interactions all through the story. It’s entirely worth the money for the e-pub and I’ll probably be re-reading it as a comfort/beach read. Four stars because the second half lacked detail and the ending seemed rushed. For all the time lavished on every rebuilding effort of Jason’s, there wasn’t nearly the same detail to the work done when Jason was on his feet and had time to support other people. Rated PG. If you let your kids watch Looney Tunes, then they can read this. There is no sex and only short-take violence, so I would say this book is fine for anyone old enough to comprehend the sentences. However, there is a lot about dating/relationships in here, so I don’t think anyone under the age of 13 will find it all that interesting. ... show more

  • Stardew Valley the novel
Casual farming takes the idea of a more relationship focused and farming focused video game world and runs with it. There’s a minor amount of world building and LitRPG mechanics to make things more fantastical plot wise. I would say the biggest weakness is not quite explaining the politics causing the central conflict of the book, but it makes sense a farmer spending all his time fixing up his inheritance wouldn’t look too much into it. I would say you could probably get by with this book being rated PG. There is a minor amount of violence that’s never really detailed, people getting afflicted by an illness, and discussions of romantic relationships. I didn’t notice too many curse words, if any, but it might be because I enjoyed reading something more focused on building a life. You will probably enjoy this if you enjoy slice of life stories. You probably won’t enjoy this one as much if you prefer crunchy mechanics, in-depth world building, and dark stories. I am looking forward to the next one! ... show more

  • Great read!
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It was the first time I’ve read this type of book and I liked it! The characters are great, and plenty of unexpected twists; especially with the monsters!
