I slid a smaller pipe in the other half, and used a vise with padding on the other end to gently squeeze a corresponding index on the left side. The paddle looks like it's unfinished and you can see where the paddle has a place for a cut out, that doesn't belong on this paddle. It's almost like your getting second here. DO NOT order your paddle from Amazon. I'm not sure about from their company but for the price I thought it would at least be decent quality. I love this paddle - this is the 2nd one I've purchased; the first finally shattered after years of hard paddling. Unfortunately the joining sleeve (ferrule) came unglued after 50 days, and Amazon's 30-day warranty had expired. They directed me to the seller backcountry.com, who advised their 45-day warranty had expired. They in turn directed me to the manufacturer, Johnson Outdoors/Old Town, who immediately noted there was not enough glue and that this was a clear manufacturing error. They had a new one shipped out the following day, in my hands in 3 days. If in the future I need another, I will go directly to Johnson Outdoors, and cut out middle men who are happy to grab margin but not stand behind the product. ... show more

The paddle is great. It cuts through the water with little force. Very light weight. I would have give. 5 stars but my paddle arrived damaged. The packaging for shopping was not the greatest and it arrived with one end of the paddle being bent. There are two spots where it has been flattened instead of being rounded. It was more a packing/shopping problem than an actual product problem. I would buy again if it were shipped differently. ... show more

I am an avid kayaker, and paddle a few hundred miles a year. I used it for the first time on several paddles and a total of about 15 miles. Paddle is everything I expected; Light, strong, and well made. Great color that can be seen at a distance by boaters and matched my 14.5 Old Town Castine kayak's orange sunshine color. We ordered two. Both arrive in a large box with no padding. The box was crushed during shipment and the shaft was dented. Seeing on the reviews this is a common occurrence. Otherwise the product seemed pretty cool.
