I've never had a weight-plate break on me before, but here we are. Now, I'm not one of those guys who drops bars to the ground. I do everything in a controlled fashion and on rubber mats as well. I was doing deadlifts, and when I brought the bar down for the final rep, this stupid thing cracked, just like that. Of course, CAP only offers a 30 day warranty on plates, so I'm totally out of luck. But this thing didn't even last 5 months. I have plates that are literally older than I am (I'm 39 and the plates were my dad's). Do yourself a favor and invest in something higher quality. ... show more

UPDATE - Still in good shape. Have seen some people claim these snap in half. I use it about 3 to 4 times a week and none of my weights of this brand have yet to have any issues. UPDATE NUMERO TWO-O - Still in perfect shape. Now over 3 years later. I have purchased several more of this brand. All are in perfect shape. I use them on pads or on carpet and set them down carefully. If you are having problems with them breaking as some people claim, you may have a defective one or are dropping them from too high of a position on too hard of a surface. So stop that. CAP weight plates are complete garbage. No quality control at all. Some are occasionally OK, if you luck out, but often you get complete and utter garbage. AVOID if you have other options. Unfortunately with the current situation, I had no choice. It was these pieces of crap or nothing at all. The bore holes are completely rough, to the point I had to take a metal file to one of the 25lb plates to smooth out some burrs that otherwise would have damaged my bar. The other 25lb plate had voids in the fabric of the metal, indicating very poor casting quality. Really I cant believe anyone on Amazon sells this junk. If I were receiving as a seller I would tell CAP to take their trash and shove it up their asses. AVOID AVOID AVOID. ... show more

What can be said about a 5# weight that hasn't been said before. I mean, when your lifting at your current weight, and decide that you need just five pounds more, this thing has got your back. Oh wait, you say smartly, wouldn't that be unbalanced? Yes, yes it would I admit. So you better do what I did and buy two of these bad boys. Yes, it does cost twice as much, but your getting twice as much, so that's only fair, right? Just be prepared to lift 10# more, because, you see, if you can only handle 5# more what you actually need are 2 - 2.5# weights. Now you've gotten a review and a math lesson for only the cost of a review. Is it a bad time to admit that I didn't actually weigh these to see if they are actually 5#? Because I totally didn't. I guess sometimes you just have to trust people. Of course I forgot to mention all of the other things that this could be used for, like tracing circles exactly this size, as a coaster, and as a really short distance frisbee. Great plates that are easy to grip and hold. I store them on CAP Barbell 2" Plate Rack and use them primarily with a 7' CAP Barbell Solid ECO Bar. There were some imperfections with the paint in a few areas, but really nothing to worry about. The approximate plate diameters are 5.75" for 2.5lbs, 9.25" for 10lbs, 11.0" for 25lbs, 14.0" for 35lbs, and 16.25" for 45lbs. ... show more

    • Paint fumes make you sick

The enamel coating used on these weights gives me a sore throat and makes me feel dizzy. If you are planning on keeping these weights outdoors please ignore this review. However, if you are planning on a home gym I would VERY strongly advise against purchasing. After two months these plates smell just as bad as the day I bought them. After doing some research I think I understand why: the enamel paint was not fully “baked” on when these plates were manufactured. This kind on paint does not dry at room temperature. It must be baked in an industrial oven. Unfortunately that means partially baked plates will continue to give off noxious fumes for years to come. Before learning this I tried scrubbing them with soap, degreaser, rubbing alcohol, and of course just cracking a window. None of it worked. As others have mentioned these plates come with stickers on them that say “caution this product contains chemicals known to the state of California to cause cancer.” Trust the sticker. Either keep these plates in your garage or back yard. Don’t have a garage? Don’t buy these plates! ... show more

I bought a whole rack and a weight set from CAP. And I weighed the plates and they seem to be all over the place. Here I'm reviewing the 45's so I'll stick to that. I have 4 plates of the 45, and only 1 of them actually weigh 45lbs, the others are all around 43 lbs... These are cast iron plates so inaccuracies are to be expected, but if I squat like this, then that means I'll have about 5lbs stacked heavier on one side than the other. I'm not sure if that'll be bad for my spine in the long term... I would try to return some plates, but do I return 3 plates and hope i get actual 45lb plates back? Or do I return the 1 correct plate and hope i get wrong, inaccurate plates so they match the other 3 inaccurate plates? haha These are heavy items so I'm not even sure how you would return them. Anyways, just FYI PSA for those looking. Weigh your plates. ... show more
