  • Worthwhile investment for a new 70D owner
Its been a while since I upgraded my camera from the 20D so I thought it prudent to add this guide to my order. The book has quality binding and printing with some brilliant photographs that illustrate the cameras capability. Answers to questions about new features (to me, at least), like Live preview and movie mode were easy to find and answered completely. The book overall helped me get started more quickly than fumbling around without it (as I did with previous EOS cameras) Overall, there is a bunch of information that I could figure out myself, but having the book is a welcome leg up and for the price, a worthwhile investment (essentially amounting to 1% of the purchase price.) ... show more

  • Pretty good guide!
My biggest complaint on Canon DSLR's is the fact that their instruction manuals are crap. I guess if you have to have a complaint about a camera that expensive it's a fairly good complaint. It's meant that I've bought several other "guides" to supplement... no, actually to replace the manuals. This one is fine. Fairly easy to negotiate and I've not yet found myself in need of information that wasn't in there. If you buy, I hope you are as happy as I was and thanks for taking the time to read my review. ... show more

  • Well written, perfect explanation and examples, nice education inbetween
I love this book. I read the first 5 chapter within 3 days and it gave me a perfect introduction into the camera. The author always gives examples and applications of each feature and explains when and how to apply those. Some educational chapter regarding aperture, exposure etc helped again to refresh. Some books spend so much time on optical theories and background - here it was just a small part, sometimes just a page, about the perfect size and does not deviate from the main topic, the camera. Would definitely recommend and it is surely more fun to read this instead of the dry manual. ... show more

  • Helpful with good illustrations
This guide was helpful for understanding my new camera. The manual that came with the camera assumes you know how to use a DSLR camera and is presented in very small print on newsprint quality paper. This book has great color illustrations and is printed on high quality heavy stock paper. I think the name "Field Guide" is a bit misleading, this is more of a book to study indoors with your camera before you go out and use the features. Even with a good guide such as this one, it is going to take me a long time to appreciate all the features of my new camera. Note: I have had a DSLR previously, but always kept it in full auto mode. I am determined to learn about creative photography and this book will be a help in that effort. I have found many more general helps available on You Tube, I especially like Mike Browne's tutorials. This book will help with the specifics of using my 70D. ... show more

  • Great camera
I've been waiting and watching Canon camreas for many years. Have been a Rebel user all these years, putting my money into their L lenses, but not pulling the trigger on the camera body until one came out that had the best feature set and price combination. That camera body, for me, is the 70D. Have shot a couple months now and am completely satisfied with the photos this captures. More importantly this camera combines ease of use with many "auto" modes along with total manual controls as well. And the pop up flash gets a lot of use as a fill in outdoor portraits without having to lug around a separate flash unit. Great high speed shutter for my kids' sporting events. Great exposure bracketing for HDR shooting. ... show more

  • Outstanding Field Guide for Canon EOS 70D
I purchased this field guide book for the Canon 70D primarily because I had previously purchased Charlotte K. Lowrie's Digital Field Guide for the Canon EOS 50D. The Field Guide 50D was well organized and easy to understand. The Field Guide for the 70D is also well organized and easy to understand. The Field Guide starts with the basics and goes through a clearly outlined Table of Contents, Ten Chapters, Appendix A and B, followed by a Glossary and Index. The illustrations used in the Field Guide are also very good. I am not a pro photographer but have been taking pictures for 50 + years and I was amazed to get this much information in one book at such a reasonable price. ... show more

  • Good but not great
Found the book to be very informative in many areas but somewhat confusing in others. There was one time that I had to contact Canon Tech Support because some of the features were not explained in detail. After less than a minute with tech support, I got the clarification that I needed. At times there seems to be steps missing when some of the feature process were explained. It is as if, " Go to step 1,2 & 3 then go to step 6. Some of these information voids can make the 70D more complicated than it needs to be. In addition to this book, I have used YouTube and some of the photography blogs to get some of my questions answered as well. ... show more
