  • Excellent
Great collection of songs, and I want to emphasize what other reviewers have said--the sound is excellent. The booklet contains details about where each song was recorded, who the original engineers were, where each song placed on the Billboard, R&B and British charts, and so forth. Sadly, nothing about the history of Cameo Parkway or biographical info on the artists, but you can't have everything. If you truly want to feel like you're back in Philly during the early 60's, listen to this in conjunction with Cruisin' 1957 which features Joe Niagara, the voice of "Wibbage" (WIBG-AM), doing ads and announcements between more songs you'll remember. ... show more

  • Cameo Parkway: The Greatest Hits
Excellent music from an excellent era in music. This disk has enough early 1960's hits to keep you "Twisting" and dancing all night long.

  • THE NAME SAYS IT ALL
At Ever-lovin' Last! Waited many years for this (the original recordings) and with just a couple of exceptions, everything I--the young teenager in the early '60s--could ask for, from the Philly record company that simply pumped them out, time after time after time. Yeah, some of it (Dee Dee Sharp's Gravy) is derivative, a little of it is dreck (Dinner with Drak), but it's the big hits you want, right? And the hits are whatcha get, sounding better than you remember them, not because they`ve been re-recorded (they haven't) but because the sound's not leaking out from your tinny little transistor radio or fighting its way through the snap-crackle of a much-played 45 rpm single. Particularly happy with all the Orlons' cuts, including oft-overlooked South Street (with what must be the first pop-song lyric mention of "hippies"--in its pre-Haight-Ashbury context! Especially delighted with the Dovells biggest hit, Can't Sit Down, and song that just barrels along on the delirious energy of the Cameo-Parkway sidemen. Wow!! Some surprises, too, for many people: Question Mark's 96 tears, for example. I could do without Rydell's Cha-cha-cha, even though it was top-ten and substitute, instead, Kissin' time and add Checker's lesser-known 20 Miles. Small quibbles. Thanks to all of them--and the guys on the other side of the glass wall: Dave Appell, Kal Mann and Bernie Lowe. Magic! ... show more

  • Excellent Album-Best of Both
I was looking for Bobby Rydell (Wild One, We Got Love) and the Orlons (South Street, Wah-Watusi) but thought I'd have to get multiple albums to get the songs I wanted. This album has those songs plus songs by Chubby Checker (Twist, Limbo Rock) and Dee Dee Sharp (Mashed Potato Time, Gravy (For My Mashed Potatoes) plus songs like Silhouettes, 96 Tears, and Bristol Stomp. This was just what I wanted and I was thrilled to find it to get some of the great oldies songs missing from my collection. ... show more
