Description

On November 10, 2009, acclaimed developer Infinity Ward will make its return with the release of Modern Warfare 2, the sequel to the multiple Game of the Year winner Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare. Modern Warfare 2 is a first-person tactical shooter and the sixth entry in the popular Call of Duty series. True to its name and following the lead of its predecessor, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, it places players in modern combat settings, as opposed to the WWII environments of the earlier Call of Duty games. This modern approach brings with it new weapons, action and options. Coupled with a variety of gameplay modes including single player, multiplayer and the co-op Special Ops Mode, it is destined to be one of the most popular games of 2009 and a worthy addition to the Call of Duty series. .caption { font-family: Verdana, Helvetica neue, Arial, serif; font-size: 10px; font- weight: bold; font-style: italic; } ul.indent { list-style: inside disc; text- indent: -15px; } table.callout { font-family: verdana; font-size: 11px; line- height: 1. 3em; } td.vgoverview { height: 125px; background: 9DC4D8 url( page/callout-bg.png) repeat-x; border-left: 1px solid 999999; border-right: 1px solid 999999; padding-left: 20px; padding-right: 20px; padding-bottom: 10px; width: 250px; font-family: verdana; font-size: 12px; } Classic tactical FPS action. Story The storyline of Modern Warfare 2 picks up where the events of Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare left off. The ultranationalist Russian leader Zakhaev has been eliminated, but it seems that his lieutenant, Vladimir Makarov, is an even bigger danger. Having made a successful play for power, Intel indicates that he is extending the reach of his influence well beyond the borders of Mother Russia, causing a stir in the international community and prompting the involvement of Task Force 141. Task Force 141 is an elite multinational unit made up of Navy Seals, Delta Force operatives, British SAS and CIA. In the single player campaign you are Sergeant Gary "Roach" Sanderson, with the hero of Call of Duty 4, "Soap" MacTavish, promoted to Captain, making an appearance as an NPC (non-player character) and your commanding officer. The elimination of Makarov and his underlings at any cost is your number one priority, regardless where the fight occurs. Gameplay The latest release in arguably the most successful tactical first-person shooter franchise of all-time, gameplay in Modern Warfare 2 follows the same winning and time-tested structure of earlier games in the series. In the single player campaign players are aided by AI squad members as they take on a series of missions aimed at eliminating Ultranationalist forces. Each mission is built around a particular objective, with players utilizing some level of guidance from NPC characters, including "Soap" MacTavish, and aided in navigation by the game's heads up display (HUD). Along the way players will be able to utilize a wide variety of weaponry and and vehicles, as well as be able to customize weapons with gadgets attached to them. Also, just as in previous games in the series, Modern Warfare 2 is heavily focused on multiplayer gameplay. The different multiplayer modes, available both in local play and online, contain plenty of customization options and revolve around different strategies ranging from the every man for himself action of "Free-for All," the classic team-based fun of "Capture the Flag and the tactical, team- oriented action of "Search and Destroy," just to name a few. Multiplayer modes also feature the "Perk" System that players may be familiar with from earlier in the franchise. Through this system players gain additional abilities, weapons and benefits as they gain experience in combat. This can be done by leveling up, but another important way way is through "kill streaks," the number of enemies eliminated in succession. These are available beginning with three kills and include the ability to call for supply drops, predator missile strikes, helicopter gunships and many more. Players have the ability to customize in advance which perks will be available at each number and can even gauge their progress towards each at the touch of a button. With an eye towards not making the game too hard for new players the game also features help to players experiencing "death streaks," multiple consecutive deaths in multiplayer matches. Special Ops Co-op Mode Along with a single player mode and multiple multiplayer modes, Modern Warfare 2 also features an unique third main play option, Special Ops Mode. Available both online and in local play, Special Ops Mode is designed to provide a distinct time-based play option, featuring special scenarios not found in other modes in the game and lots of enemies to take on. This mode can be played either alone or with a friend, again either locally or online, with local co-op play including split-screen functionality. Key Game FeaturesChallenging Multiplayer Modes – Modern Warfare 2 will contain a wealth of multiplayer modes including: the every man for himself action of "Free-for All," the classic team-based fun of "Capture the Flag and the tactical, team-oriented action of "Search and Destroy."Improved AI Enemies – Improved artificial intelligence now allows enemies to attack from virtually any direction as players respawn into the game adding additional challenges. An All-new Call of Duty Adventure - Modern Warfare 2 features an all new Call of Duty storyline revolving around the continuing struggles against the Russian rebel group the Ultranationalists, who have found a new and more dangerous leader. The 'Special Ops' Optional Co-op Mode – "Special Ops" Mode allows two players, either alone or with a friend, to engage in unique mission play and features split-screen functionality.Diverse In-game Environments - Battlegrounds traversed in the game range from the lonely, snow-clad mountains of Kazakhstan, to dark tunnels in the Afghanistan and the crowded slums of Rio.Nonstop Action - Modern Warfare 2 contains no cutscenes, so players are always engaged in the action, no matter where they are in the game.New Breach Gameplay Mechanic - Players can now blaze their own paths through the game by "Breaching" formerly impregnable obstacles like walls and doors with explosives.New Gadgets, Weapons and Weapons System Modern Warfare 2 contains many new and updated weapons, new weapons attachments, as well as a variant of the multiplayer weapons customization system from Call of Duty 4, now available in the single player campaign.New Perks and Increased Customization - Multiplayer modes feature new perks for leveling up, and for killstreaks and deathstreaks. Those awarded for streaks can customized in advance according to when they become available.

  • A Must Buy from a Multi-Player perspective.
Platform For Display: PlayStation 3 Edition: Standard
I received my game from the UPS man today at 11:30 MST and after a few chores, I was able to get up and play. I popped the game in and of course I had to go through 2 updates, 1 system (3.01) and 1 game update (1.01). I wasn't sure what the updates were for, nor did I care; I just wanted to start playing the game. After the quick updates I was on my way. I beat the first Modern Warfare in about 5 or 6 hours and it was a great game with high replay value. I definitely anticipate the single player to be as great in MW2 as it was in the first MW. I immediately went into multiplayer and have been playing for about an hour and I tell you, it is fantastic. I loved everything about the multiplayer in part 1. Of course it wasn't perfect, but it was and still is the best multi-player game in my opinion... Until now... I play a lot of MP games (Team fortress 2, Counter Strike, etc) and I play those every now and then but I always went back to Modern Warfare. I still played it heavily until today. It will forever be out of my ps3 and will be replaced by its big brother MW2. I know I'm talking a lot about MW part 1 because I have spent days and days playing the MP (as many of you have) and its still not boring to me. The most annoying thing about playing MW1 was losing the match 20 seconds in because the host left the game. Lemme tell you, Infinity Ward listened because there's none of that BS anymore... kinda. When you lose the host for whatever reason, it will pick another host instead of calling the game a loss and you can continue from where you started. I LOVE THIS! it's not perfect by any means because you can still get kicked out of the match because the computer cannot find a suitable host (happened twice to me in an hour, about 10 games). Nonetheless it is a fantastic "feature" which was missing from the first game. That was the first big thing that I noticed because it happened to me in the first match and I was like "wtf" and when I put 2 and 2 together, I knew this was worth buying the game alone... it doesn't end there... Multiplayer has the same controls as the original and many many many many many things that are just a little better.Graphics seem more polished and I imagine they would be since the game is 2 years older now. The sound is superb. If you're treading through water, snow, or grass, you could hear it like you were walking through it in real life. Same thing goes with walking up and down stairs, on roofs, etc. Of course the weapons sound great but I'm not too fond of the character dialog (i.e. "cover me im reloading" "GRENAAAAADAAAAAA" etc). The best thing about the Multiplayer has to be the new perks and killstreak rewards. I only had a 5 kill streak which allowed me to launch a missile. You have a computer case that you open up and it breaks into a screen that shows the missiles view and you can control where you want it to land. Enemies show up as red squares and you obviously aim for those squares. There are many more killstreak rewards,up to 25, and that launches a nuclear bomb to kill everyone in the game. There's also the little things..... you can break most glass windows ( i don't want to say all because I didnt try every window and I don't want someone to point out that there's one that you cant break). I'm not sure if you can throw grenades through a window but I will be trying it. You have rewards for every level including unlocking different types of banners for your profile picture and of course weapon upgrades and perks for your soldier. The maps are pretty good too... Out of the 10 matches I have played the same map maybe 2 or 3 matches which isn't bad. Of course there are maps you're not going to like and I think I have 1 or 2 already. Enough about me yapping about the game. I recommend it to everyone that loves online shooters. In the past hour I told my friends to go pick it up and they obliged.. time to continue our team deathmatch dominance. This is pretty much a review so people that are hesitant or just wanting a little more information on the best aspect of the game. If you have any questions, let me know and I'll try to answer. P.S. I know the game has been out for a couple days in certain areas, but there are already level 70's and people in prestige mode. ... show more

  • Can't believe MW2 is so much better than MW3!!
Platform For Display: PlayStation 3 Edition: Standard
I got MW2 and MW3 almost at the same time and have played several online days for each game, mostly FFA and TDM matches. I am surprised that MW2 feels so much better than MW3 (for online games only): 1) MW2 promotes different styles of play that may fit different players: you can win matches with different styles of play with different skills: a good aimer with quick reaction can run-and-gun with an assault rifle or SMG; a not-so-good aimer with quick reaction can run-and-gun with a noob-tube; a player with slow reaction can be a good stealth player (e.g. a camper who moves around in a stealth manner) with silencer; not to mention the snipers with quick-scope often win FRR matches. 2) MW2 weapons and perks are balanced: ARs, machine guns, sub machine guns, and sniper rifles can all be good in different situations and with different skills. Different combinations of perks are also fun to try for different styles. Some examples are marathon+lightweight+steady aim, marathon+lightweight+ninja, marathon+lightweight+commando, scavenger+stopping power+ninja, scavenger+stopping power + steady aim, etc. 3) People complain about things in this game like over-powering weapons and perks. The complaints are mostly not true (probably from anger and lack of understanding of the game). For any weapon and perk to be considered over-power, it must have advantage over other options over a match. I will assume we play FFA and list why some common complaints are not true: (1) Quick-scope is too strong. This is a gaming technique that everyone can use. If one thinks it is too strong, (s)he should learn and use it. (2) Noob-tube is too strong. Noob-tube is good for mid to long range targets. It almost always loses out in close encounter. Also the effect of the explosion depends on the objects on the ground: in many cases, the tube is not as effective as a gun (e.g. for people hiding behind an object). These are some of the reasons why it is not the weapon of choices for most seasoned players. This weapon does allow newbies to get some kills, which is good for the game. When I just played the game, this was the only weapon that can get me kills:-). (3) Commando pro is too strong. This is a strange perception. This perk is only useful for stabbing people. How many players can win matches by mainly stabbing (it would take a real skill to win a FFA match by mostly stabbing people)? (4) Claymore is too strong. For the claymore to be effective, one must stay alive for a long time, which means that he has to camp a lot. This game is designed such that campers cannot win because they have less opportunity to see and kill enemies. This counters the effectiveness of claymore. (5) Campers ruin the game. You may get angry when your kill-streak is ended by a "camper". But a true camper who stays in a place for too long cannot win any FFA match. Once the position is revealed, MW2 gives many reliable ways to kill the camper. To know other player's position while not revealing your own is the basic skill to win firefights in this game (mini-map, sound, hot resprawn spots, etc), a good player often appears to be camping to hide his position while you are approaching :-). Cheater/hacker and the connection issue is a problem in this game. There are cheater/hackers: some seem to see through the wall; some use sniper rifles like machine guns (a skill or hack?); some people seem always able to point their guns in the right spot (a skill or hack?); some people cannot be killed no matter what. Connection can be bad from time to time. One will probably get this in two out of ten games. Overall most of the games are playable and played by honest players. I usually just quit the game when I feel there is a cheater in the group. MW3 and MW2 have similar weapons, perks, and kill streak rewards. But the minor changes (as well as its maps) in MW3 are significant enough to discourage all other styles of play but run-and-gun. There is only one type of players who can win the match in MW3: run-and-gunners with quick reaction and good aim. All of the maps are similar. The play style for all of the maps is just run-and-gun. It gets old after a while. I am sad to see that few people are now on the MW2 server due to its age. I now play MW2 almost exclusively, and will probably continue to play until nobody is on the server or when I master all kinds of play styles in this game. ... show more
