Style: Behind the Neck
The customer support from Caldwell (Battenfeld Technologies, Inc.) is definitely 5 Star! The muffs I received had small cracks on the top of each muff. I see some reviewers experiencing the same thing. I contacted Caldwell and they sent a replacement right away. That's great customer service! The behind the ear design works very well although it may not be for everyone. I found the metal band that rides behind the neck sometimes rubs against my collar and generates a little noise in the muffs but I soon forgot about it. They are not adjustable as far as pressure to keep them in place so if you have a large head you may find them tight. They are fine for me but I don't have a large head. The sound amplification of people talking works great. There are microphones on the front of each muff so the directional perception is good. You turn it on via a small knob on the back of the right muff; you then turn it until you can hear low volume sounds like people talking; you can turn it up a little to increase volume. When a firearm sounds it shuts off the mics and then comes back on. This enables you to hear everyone talking and normal ambient sounds while blocking the loud gunshots. The NPR is 21. You will miss a word or two in the conversation while the mics shut down but that's far better than missing words because of a loud bang. There is a 3.5 mm stereo jack on the top of the right muff and it comes with a cable so you can attach your phone or a music player. I have seen some reviewers complain about it's positioning but it keeps the cord out of the way. When the electronics are on a red LED, on the left muff, is lit. You must remember to turn off the power as there is no auto shut off. The batteries seem to last a while. I put in new batteries with voltage measured at 1.61 volts and after using the muff for 5 hours they measured 1.52 volts. Unlike over the head muffs they don't fold up into a small package so just shoving them in a range bag isn't as easy. You do have to be careful of the foam wind shields on the microphones. They seem to be susceptible to rub wear and damage if not stored properly. I may look for some lavalier mic foam wind covers that i can adapt to these in case they do get damaged. To summarize, other than possibly being tight, small sounds from the metal frame rubbing and having to be careful with the mic covers when storing they are a great product that functions well at a great price and have excellent customer service. I would definitely recommend them for shooting range use, especially at this price.

Solid at deafening sound and you can still hear around you. Double check you turn off the earmuffs. I like the thick cushions. Strong spring to it, I just stretch them out on furniture for weeks at a time. I don't know how well the big expensive brands compare to these, but I don't see any reason to buy any other shooting headset, especially for this price

First, the set I received does not look like the stock photo. There is an inset yellow and black Caldwell logo on the right cup - maybe an "updated" version, don't know, doesn't affect anything, just thought I'd point it out. These fit very snugly and do not shift - this is a plus in my book. Some may find them too tight, however. The microphones and cut-out circuitry work perfect - I love being able to hear everything except the loud noises: from table saws to competitive shooting. Speaking...or typing of shooting - this is the reason I bought these (competitive shooting while wearing a hat): these will get in the way of your cheek-weld. The front metal band that comes down and wraps to the back WILL make contact with your stock, no matter what kind of stock or how you position your cheek. However, it does not prevent you from pressing a little harder to slide the wire out of the way and get a proper cheek-weld. So it can be overcome, but for competitive shooting, I don't know that I want to add another variable - I will give them a chance though and see how much it distracts me. A couple of negatives: -The light on the right cup is BRIGHT! To the point of being distractive to people on the firing line. Like another reviewer, I covered it with black tape. However, these are powered by two AAA batteries - not a lot of juice, I'd prefer to not be wasting it on a worthless light. -The RCA jack is located on the TOP of the right cup. Really Caldwell? The top? So the cable comes poking up, out, and around? If on the bottom it may interfere, again, with a cheek-weld, but how about bringing it out the back? Sorry, that may sound nit-picking, but it was the first thing I noticed. It just makes NO sense to me. All-in-all, these work very well and if they do not become too much of a distractor with the cheek-weld, they will be my permanent competitive shooting hearing protection. I also bought a set of the standard banded electronic muffs from Caldwell for use with pistol shooting and while out in the shop and love them (can't wear a hat with them though).

These things are amazing. I don't understand how you can be shooting a shotgun or in a pistol range and be able to have a perfectly normal conversation with somebody and not hear any of the shooting. It is phenomenal. I've even used it for rock polishing and it's just Incredible how you can just talk around an insanely loud environment. For the money, these are the best. I've bought five of them over the years.
