I really wondered at some of the reviews of this because it is a great tool. If you have never used one, than yes it will take some time to get used to it...it is a long golf swing. But once you get used to it, things roll along nicely. There is always some taking off and adding back on in the frosting department...the curse of the task. As for any sharp edges, you want crisp edges on your cake, and this is why you use this type of device. All in all, I think it is a great tool, a tool you must learn how to use, and it takes time and practice to master that. I love how it fits flat in the drawer and cleans up a treat.

I really wanted to like this but it just didn't feel like it was working for me. Firstly,there are no instructions so I am not even sure if I assembled it correctly . I put it together and used it on my 3 layered 6in cakes but it was really hard to keep it straight. My turntable had grooves in it so this kept hitting the grooves making divots in the cake. The top wouldnt stay straight and kept scraping too much and not keeping it even. I ended up having to use it as a normal scraper without the top part because it just wasn't working.

Keep in mind that this scraper is built a bit like a geometry tool. So, if your unfrosted layers aren't exactly square and even, this scraper won't help you. But if you trim the crowns off the layers and have a cake with nice 90 degree edges you'll do great with this scraper. Use a sturdy buttercream or you'll have a mess: canned frosting will not work. The T square leveler can be unscrewed and attached parallel to the side scraper so that it can be stored very flat.

I purchased on similar to this, but plastic several months ago, it did not work well. I saw a machine that had a set up like this scrapper, but it was entirely too expensive. This worked great! Yes, there is some extra smoothing that is needed, but it starts and almost completes the process. Good for beginners as well.
