So first off, this is packaged horribly. The scraper is way too heavy for the cardboard and plastic that it comes in. The main scraper was falling out, but it didn't look like it had been used. So after washing it thoroghly and figuring out how it went together, since there aren't any instructions, I made some cakes. I had expiring cake mixes and some frosting from halloween that I needed to use, so I wasn't too worried with how it came out or how much time it would take to practice to try to get it right. First, I measured the scraper based on the height of the unfrosted cakes, then used my normal flat knife to spread the frosting. I made sure it wasn't too smooth to see how it worked. I placed my cake on a cake board on my turntable to make it easier to use. I scraped it around the edges and it worked pretty well if I could hold it straight, which I couldn't. It kept dipping towards the center and creating a hole. I would have to stop and respread the frosting on the places where it messed up. After about 30 minutes, I had a sort of smooth cake on the top and most of the frosting scraped off the sides. In the end, I used my knife to smooth it out like I would normally and then threw on the sprinkles from the frosting. Overall, it was very messy and not very easy to use. The end result was a buttercream covered cake that was beautiful and level. I had no idea what I was doing, but this is what I got from just winging it. It feels durable enough to give me a few more opportunities to practice my amateur baking skills.

I really wondered at some of the reviews of this because it is a great tool. If you have never used one, than yes it will take some time to get used to it...it is a long golf swing. But once you get used to it, things roll along nicely. There is always some taking off and adding back on in the frosting department...the curse of the task. As for any sharp edges, you want crisp edges on your cake, and this is why you use this type of device. All in all, I think it is a great tool, a tool you must learn how to use, and it takes time and practice to master that. I love how it fits flat in the drawer and cleans up a treat. ... show more

This scraper is heavy duty. The size is big and it has some weight. The removable and adjustable horizontal piece is not very useful. It has to be taken off when storing the scraper. It would be nice if the horizontal piece could turn 90 degree to align with the vertical piece for storage. The workmanship is not great. It has some rough edges. It works ok. ... show more
