So far so good! Initially I was worried that the length of the neck flap would be insufficient for my husband to wear to work. I worried that it would not give him the appropriate coverage to prevent him from getting a neck sunburn. Just to be safe, I ordered a cheaper hat for him to try simultaneously with this one. The cheaper one had a much longer neck flap. He’s told me he prefers this one so far because the length is actually perfect and also doesn’t move around as much as the cheaper alternative. It’s better quality than the other one, fits great and comfortably, and the cooling fabric is great for wearing outdoors for prolonged periods of time. Although I was hesitant to spend this much on a hat, knowing it would be dirtied for work and knowing there were several cheaper alternatives, I don’t regret it. I was looking for a ball cap with a neck shade for hiking. I am bald on top and I have a relatively small diameter head (both points are relevant to this review!). I first went to REI and purchased an Outdoor Research Sun Runner Cap. I didn't initially realized that the large side vented panels would not provide the needed UV protection for my scalp (and I don't want to slather sun screen over the top of my head). So my selection narrowed to neck shade hats without large ventilation panels. I then purchased a Tillak Chamisa Sun Hat, but found the material too stiff and scratchy to be comfortable (it was a noisy hat to wear), and returned it. This Columbia Unisex Schooner Bank II Cachalot was my third attempt. I like the feel and the one-size-fits-all does fit my smaller than average head, BUT, it could easily be too tight for someone with a larger head. There are some ballcap ventilation holes, but no large panels so the hat can get warm, but that is the trade-off I needed to avoid the need for sunscreen on my bald head. I simply find a shady spot and remove the hat periodically. did find one other aspect of this hat that will require a small modification by my wife (talented with a sewing machine). When hiking, I like to hang my hat from my backpack or belt if walking in extended areas of shade, with quick access if hitting a sunny section of trail. Because this hat does not have a spring cord or strap adjustment for size, there is no convenient place to hook the hat on a small carabiner. So Pros: Very comfortable fit and neck shade feel & very lightweight Cons: One size may not fit all; may be too warm for those with scalp UV protection (either hair or sunscreen); need a way to hang it from by belt or backpack (but I think this problem will be easily solved by my talented wife). ... show more
