  • Very impressed with what you can get for $200
Size: 1/4
Let me start out by saying my wife is an experienced (10+ years) violin teacher and has played violin for most of her life. We bought this violin for our 5 year old son after being unimpressed with the "economy" violin rental for $25 per month. The rental was Romanian-made and was "valued" at ~$500 by the shop. This Bunnel violin outfit is a great value and likely one my wife will be recommending to new students. The violin itself sounds great for a student violin and the fit and finish is nearly perfect. It is very beautiful, and the setup done by Kennedy was very good. The action was perfect, the bridge fit well, and the strings were mostly in tune. The rest of the outfit is definitely lower quality than the violin, but nothing is junk. The bow is good. The case is a little cheap, but should hold up well. The oblong style is nice to fit music in the side pocket. The rosin is good. The shoulder rest is very cheap, but should be ok. It is much better than the foam one my son was using on the rental. The poorly written description the shoulder rest box was funny. Overall, what you get in this outfit is impressive, the violin being the most impressive. Edit: Was looking at this one again and it seems they've upgraded at least the shoulder rest. ... show more

  • Good Purchase... package warning.
Size: 4/4
FIRST off packaging, including a WARNING: The violin was extremely well packed for safety during the shipping process. Received completely undamaged and if great condition. I bought this in November as a Christmas gift for my daughter. Amazon shipped it in it's original box which has GIANT letters that spell VIOLIN along the side of it. My daughter retrieved the mail therefore ruining the surprise of her Christmas gift. I'll admit I cried for hours because it is the only gift I have for her and was excited for her to open it Christmas morning. So PLEASE be warned, IF this is a GIFT, make alternative shipping arrangements (perhaps to a relative's house) in order to keep the surprise. VIOLIN: I did not know what to expect and was nervous buying this violin. I am not knowledgeable about violins. This is the first violin in have bought for my daughter. She was previously using a Mendini that the school provided for her. That violin proved difficult for her to learn on since (as noted in many reviews) it has to be tuned every 10 minutes. Her teacher spent a lot of time tuning before he could teach. This violin DOES NOT come with a shoulder rest. IF there are any cosmetic flaws, I cannot find them. There ISN'T any varnish under the neck of the violin. If you're a newbie like me this may surprise you; however it's pretty standard not to have varnish there. The case is beautiful. Really high quality especially considering that it's a student violin where many would short change the quality of the case. I gave the violin to my daughter's teacher to give it a look over and to make certain that it was a good violin. The only thing that he found was that the bridge was too high which I guess affects the quality of the sound and/or playing ability (not exactly sure). He swapped the bridge out with a new one. He was also kind enough to add the stickers and ordered her a shoulder rest. In his estimation this is a good violin and perfect for her. He believes it should last her until she's ready to move up to the next level (as her skills improve). OVERALL IMPRESSION: A+, I would RECOMMEND this Violin for your student's need. Don't be nervous like I was and afraid you might be making a bad choice if you're a newbie. I DID NOT receive any kind of promotional discount or free product for this review. I paid full price just like those of you reading this. If you found this helpful please click the link saying so. Thanks. 🙂 ... show more

  • Size: 4/4 : Great but needs replacements
Size: 1/4
This would be my first purchase of a violin. It came pretty well wrapped. The case is solid and holds 2 bows a violin and accessories. It did come with a shoulder rest(Some people said they didn't get one. I guess they changed it so now they send one). Complaints(Preventing me from giving 5 stars): The rosin block caused my bow that I got with the violin to break some hairs (I was not doing it that hard. The plastic box around the rosin can easily catch the hairs of your bow so BE CAREFUL!). The violin has some damage on it I don't know if this is normal but i'm willing to overlook it because I do not have time or patience to send it back over something that might be normal. It looks like the finish wasn't properly applied (It doesn't matter to me much but I will post a picture of the damage). The Pegs will slip if you don't push them into the head. (This is normal but I would think the pegs would be a little longer then they are as to stick out of the other side of the head so that it is a more snug fit.). As this is a pupil version from them and not a fancy ricard. I would think they would put some fret stickers in there. (I had to purchase them, How expensive is it to include a sticker??). Shoulder rest is kind of a piece of junk. (Maybe it was just mine but the clamps that you attach to the violin would not screw into the pad and I don't have a very long neck so it became impossible to use it. I had to purchase a new one (Which I did anyway because some people were saying it doesn't come with one)) Praises: The violin is actually more beautiful then the picture shows. (It's darker in real life.) The violin has a pretty nice sound. (I know it's only 200$ but this thing makes quite a loud and clear sound) The case is sturdy ( Its got a soft shell outside but it's pretty hard overall. It can take a beating.) Suggestions: Replace the rosin (You need a better rosin or else it will strip your bow hair.) Replace the bow (The bow that comes with is okay but it's a bit heavy, I bought a carbon fiber bow just so I could have to not hassle with breaking and it would be lighter.) Replace the shoulder rest (If you don't want to spend money on one of these you can always just use a soft cloth to put on your shoulder and rest the violin on it.) Buy a set of strings! (Yes it comes with 2 prelude sets 1 on the violin and 1 in a baggie. But if you are brand new to tuning anything you will most likely pop your E string because the violin does not come tuned at least mine didn't I didn't break any strings though but i'm use to tuning I play the guitar as well.) Overall for the price it is a good buy but you will end up spending around 50$ more for the replacements. Keep your old stuff however and use it until it breaks that way you can get some experience under you and get fancy with your shiny new bow and other things. The reason I didn't give it 3 stars is because well that would be harsh it does what it says it does. The problems I have are trivial and can be fixed or avoided. I'm new to the violin so who am I to be overly critical. Added 2 pictures. 1 showing the damage (on the side of the violin) and 1 showing the color of the violin (The front of the violin facing picture) ... show more
