Description

New York Times bestselling author Dave Hollis knows what it feels like to realize you’ve been chasing someone else’s goals and sacrificing your own. He has taken control of his life and future, and he’s ready to share the lessons he learned along the way with readers who are facing similar struggles. After his hardest year also became his best ever, Dave came to appreciate the power of cultivating courage in the face of adversity. Taking steps into the unknown came at the expense of his comfort, but the willingness to invite discomfort and use it as fuel was precisely why he grew through it to get a step closer to the person he was meant to be. The same can be true for you. After weathering a highly publicized personal crisis amid the backdrop of a global pandemic and navigating the enjoyable but unpredictable waters of being a single father to four kids, he has been forced to become the captain of his own life and is ready to teach others how to do the same.Built for Courage will help you:Develop a deep understanding where you are, a clear vision of where you’re going and the practical steps it will take to get you there;Cultivate the courage to face your fears and embrace discomfort to live the life of impact and fulfillment you were meant for;Unpack the deliberate design and specific purpose that you were created for along with the fundamental daily habits and routines that you’ll need to attach yourself to if you’re going to honor the intention of your creator;Dive deeper into the stories, values, and beliefs you attach yourself to and decide once and for all if they have credibility or if it’s time to cut bait;Identify and, if necessary, adjust your goals to ensure they are clear, don’t belong to other people, and are not contingent on immediate results;Accept failure as the richest source of intelligence and help you reframe it as a requirement for your own progress and growth; andMuch, much more.Built for Courage gleans wisdom from sources vast and wide, as well as from the life experiences of Dave himself, to get you to the place you’re meant to go and become who you are meant to be, regardless of any anchor holding you back. • Tone deaf word salad
I drank the Hollis kool-aid and have followed Dave and his ex for years. However, Dave is right when he claims to have changed, but it definitely hasn’t been for the better. I wanted to like this book, and I tried VERY hard to keep an open mind, despite the overused ship metaphors. I had an advanced reader copy, and frankly, this book is awful. I believe Dave’s intentions were good, but he missed the mark. Leaving a multi-million dollar salary at Disney and going through a divorce aren’t enough to categorize Dave as courageous. You can save the $20 and watch his Instagram stories for 3-4 days to hear the same anecdotes and “lessons” for free. You’ll even get some discount codes for meat sticks and teeth whitener, making it a better deal. In addition to its lack of relatable substance, this book desperately needed an editor. The incoherent run-on sentences make it a tough read, and it isn’t worth the mental gymnastics required to get through it. Sorry, Captain, this book is lost at sea. Let’s not go, shall we? Edited to add: I read the entire book as an advanced reader copy on NetGalley AND bought the book on Audible. I was asked to give an honest review as part of the launch team, which I did, and my review was written after reading the entire book and not just the first 50 pages. ... show more

  • Real life examples to support everyone in developing a bit more courage
I’ll start by saying that I don’t know Dave Hollis. Nor do I know any of the people who have left reviews here. But, as a psychologist, I do understand patterns of human behavior. When I see a series of negative reviews (like those left here) it gives me pause. Full disclosure - I haven’t read the entire book. I purchased it as a pre-order, after hearing a talk Dave gave several months ago, and received it yesterday morning. I’ve only read the first 50ish pages thus far, but it’s abundantly clear that the reviewers leaving scathing remarks are not commenting on the book itself. They must have some other bone-to-pick with this author; one that likely reflects some unexamined issues in their own lives. To come onto a platform like Amazon during an author’s book launch and leave reviews like this says much more about the reviewer than the book or the author. We each have our own opinions about the books we read. There’s no book that pleases everyone, and a spectrum of reviews is to be expected. But when a person (or in this case a group of people) takes it upon themself to publicly denigrate an author and their work, it’s clear there is some ulterior motive underlying that behavior. If you read it and didn’t enjoy it, that’s legitimate. Leave a star rating or don’t. Move on to a book you may find more beneficial. No need to tear an author down in the process, regardless of what you think about the work they produced. The famous “man in the arena” Roosevelt quote comes to mind here. It’s easy to write a scathing comment about something someone else has created. But have you been willing to produce anything of your own and to risk putting it out into the world for public consumption? If not, your critiques (and certainly your attacks) are irrelevant. Here’s what I can honestly say about the book thus far. It’s clearly written with many illustrations that those who appreciate visual examples will enjoy. It focuses on some basic foundations of personal development, with the author’s personal life experiences used to illustrate them in action. There are journal prompts to support the reader in implementing the ideas. It’s a solid book for anyone getting started in the world of personal growth and development, and for those who have been engaged in this work for some time but want a refresher and perhaps some helpful new examples and applications. If you’ve heard the author speak and found him relatable, you’ll likely enjoy and benefit from this book. Kudos to this author, and all the rest, who are courageous enough to not only create something, but to risk putting it out into the world for the rest of us. ... show more

  • Built Through Privilege
His work is shallow and built on white, male privilege. His courage to get through a Triathlon after a year of planning, training, paying for a coach, resources you couldn't imagine... Was to not train seriously, make jokes of his coach questioning why he was going against plan on social, disqualify himself because he was out of his league, yet he was COURAGEOUS enough to still wear the medal and say he did it. This man has no courage, he only gets through his own failures. ... show more

  • Unfortunately, disappointing.
After reading this book I have to question what Dave Hollis is experience is and what qualifies him to write a book that would be considered self-help or improvement. I really expected more from this book. It’s written in such a simplistic style, and there’s so much twisting of words, but nothing is really being said. Well, nothing other than platitudes and optimistic wall-art sayings. Dave Hollis Is a part of a self-help, life coaching group who all seem to feed off each other, but i’m not sure where the support comes from, because in Dave’s case, nothing concrete is being said. No actual steps or action items are stated clearly. There’s also a bit of a victim mentality that is extremely unappealing, and quite honestly, embarrassing. I think it would be interesting, if Dave writes another book, to discuss how much he has struggled standing on his own after his divorce and actually being vulnerable and genuine with people who’ve been following him for the past few years. ... show more
