Description

Build one of the most iconic and elegant forms in American furniture history. Expert furniture crafter Kubalak teaches how to craft a reproduction of one of the most highly embellished and finest examples ever made. Using step-by-step photos, Kubalak directs the serious student through this complex project by breaking it into several subprojects, then combining them into the completed piece. Each subproject has its own chapter that provides pattern drawings, exploded views, detailed instructions, and abundant photographs of every step. Additional chapters focus on case construction, subassemblies, and finishing. Although this is an advanced project, the instruction is logical and complete so that the serious reader, independent of skill, can successfully work through the steps. Full-size project plans are included. Build your own version that will be a family heirloom for generations. Read more

  • well appointed instruction Manual
Ive seen a lot of how too books on furniture building. What seems to lack in some is always a lack of some minor detail. This is an instruction book that requires a considerable carving skill. You will have accomplished half the task if you can only build a cabinet but that part can be accomplished with patients. The hard part is the carving. Not an easy task without some practice. Although I have only reviewed 1/2 of the book a lot of thought has gone into producing what I consider a well thought out and written text. Unlike many text Kubalac has. provided templates to copy the patterns needed to carve. Some discretion should be attended to, to have the right carving tools for the task. An experienced carver can fudge and use a slightly less wide tool, but I would not recommend this to everyone. Overall the color photos alone are Wonderfull and each step of the building process is well explained. ... show more

  • Very detailed description of building a complex carved table
Initial impression: this is an excellent text. The author goes into great detail breaking every step of the building and carving into manageable sections. He offers many techniques tailored to the section he is working. There are abundant closeup step by step photos throughout. Between the text and the photos, I had no trouble following along and understanding what was going on. To be open, I have not put the book to actual use yet, but just from reading and the photos this text should be a great resource to draw from. The book itself is very well constructed on quality paper and has a sown binding and heavy covers. It is well worth the higher price. What don't I like? For a book on carving, there is no discussion of tools or techniques. I imagine that the author felt this book was aimed at advanced carvers so a discussion was not required. However, getting the author's insights on the carving process would have been very helpful. Also missing, to the point of being annoying, is a list of tools used. There should be a tool list for each section up front prior to the discussion of that section. Or, perhaps a tools used appendix. Instead, I am forced to read the entire section and pick out what is needed to complete the work. Thankfully, in almost all cases the author identifies the exact tool he is using. Despite this annoyance, I do recommend this text if you have interest in how a very complex Chippendale table is made. ... show more
