Battery operation did not work (I thought). I tried three sets of batteries. I got five minutes runtime each from the first two sets, then nothing. Then I contacted brio and read other customer reviews and learned the trick to start this engine. Press front button and hold for three seconds.

Our great nephew just loves this little train. The steam lasts for a really long time too. The hardest thing was figuring out how to start it and nothing in the instructions tells you. The answer is to hold down the top red button firmly for 3 seconds. We also have difficulty filling the train with water but that’s played just us. Overall, this was a huge hit ... show more

I ordered this early to ensure it arrived in time for my grandson's first birthday. Unfortunately, by the time we opended the gift we discovered that the train did not work at all and the timeframe to return it and reorder had lapsed. If I could I would rate this as zero stars.

    • Excellent but expensive Brio train with STEAM!

This is a really nice train. We bought this to replace ‘Red Train’ from Brio. We wore out Red Train. This train is a nearly perfect replacement. It has two lights up front (which blink when the train is in reverse). STEAM!! You fill the engine (via the chimney) and it blows out cold steam. Super cool! It has a mild whine when running but otherwise has no noise. The train is heavy compared to other trains or cars. I think the extra weight is very helpful for traction. This was the biggest problem compared to Red Train. Red Train didn’t have enough traction. It had plenty of power though. This train has plenty of power (2 AAA batteries) to carry three or four cars even up inclines. It looks cool and works great. My four year old was able to operate this train after a brief instruction period (need to ‘push and hold’ the power button for example). I have it four stars because it solves the number one issue with Red Train - traction. It also has steam! The back of the train has the typical magnet connector instead of the tag-along trolley that Red Train has. This helps the train back up easier compared to Red Train. I took a star away because this train doesn’t have the Choo Choo and bell sounds that Red Train has and doesn’t have the red ‘reverse’ lights. I thought those were cool features. Overall this train is expensive but my kid loves it and it is a great replacement for Red Train that literally wore out. ... show more
