Description

Breitling. One watch has made this name famous worldwide, the Navitimer. In 1952 this watch was a real sensation, the chronograph along with the calculator made it possible for the pilot to carry out all necessary calculations during the flight. This made the Navitimer a valuable on-board instrument at that time, and a valuable collectible today. This newly revised book shows the whole spectrum of the firm's products since its founding in 1884 and gives the reader an informed insight into more than 100 years of the firm's history. Many photos, old catalogs, and advertising material support the informative text. With the help of reference numbers, the collector can also locate individual watches chronologically. This fascinating portrait of the Breitling firm will enthrall all who appreciate fine mechanical precision. Read more

  • I really like this Breitling book
Format: Hardcover
The book I bought is the 3rd edition, revised 2007. Please disregard many of the comments of previous posters as this is a new edition. There are plenty of color photographs / color plates in this book as well as black and white photos. The color plates are georgous. If you like Breitling watches, I think you will enjoy the book. There is a nice history of the company, and old photos of the Breitling factory and other historical facets of the company and logo. The book contains large tables of watch features and model numbers, movements, straps and bands, and many of the watches as well. Many of the new models are not represented, the many catalogs Breitling puts out are much better for this. the book also contains many pages of old Breitling ads, which I really like because I have never seen them before. It's so interesting to see how Breitling was trying to reach the customers of days gone by, and the ads capture moments in time when life was much different. For example, a 1946 ad shows a chronomat next to a donkey trying to multiply 3 times 4 as displayed on a white card.. too funny! Another ad from 1986 shows 3 helicopters flying above the sea at night with frogmen coming out of the water.. the ad for the Breitling Compass watch. There are also many exploded diagrams of movements and watch parts. Some of the color plates have large photos of 2 watches per page or one watch per page very large and detailed. The paper is of high quality, and nicely bound as usual for the hard cover Schiffer Book for Collectors series. There are also many price values for watches. Sure the book could be better, and wish it was very much larger. But considering there aren't many Breitling books available at all, I was very happy to find this one. ... show more

  • Good Stuff
This has some good stuff, but it is for a mixed audience, so none may be fully satisfied. For horologists, there is a fair amount of movements shown, with many of them "exploded" to show all of their parts. For historians, there is a lot of good old-time advertising and photos. For collectors, of course, you get to see a whole bunch of the product line back over a hundred years ago. The price list is minimal and ten years out of date, so it is not as relevant, but not completely useless either. Still, not a bad offering. ... show more

  • Where's the passion?
For the uninitiated let me just say that my Breitling wristwatch is my most prized possesion. In other words us Breitling collectors are a bit nuts. You'd have to be to spend so much money for a watch when a fifteen dollar quarts digital is all you need to tell time. My feeling is that the author of this book might just as well have been writing about some other collectable such as Snoopy or South Park action figures. I felt that he didn't really have the enthusiam for the subject which is a shame. I'd pay a lot for a really good book on Breitling. ... show more
