This game is a lot of fun. Fair warning: it is a JRPG so there is grinding if you want to defeat boss fights with ease. That being said, I haven’t minded that since the selling point of this franchise, the tons of classes to play, are fun to level. There are over 15 different jobs to play, each with their own unique skills and abilities you can equip to come up with some crazy combinations of power. Many of them are relevant to the story, and a few are from side quests or hidden. There is also the “default” and “brave” command options (hence the game’s name) in which you can store up turns or use multiple turns at once to attack The story itself is similar to the first installment: you’re a hero who gets swept up in the effort to save the world by collecting (rather than restoring) crystals which have been stolen and used to fuel people’s selfish (albeit sometimes starting with good intentions) wishes. Thus far, I am at the end of chapter three and will say each chapter’s story gets progressively better in my experience. All in all: if you like classic final fantasy styled approaches to both combat as well as job roles, you will enjoy this game. The art style is cute, the world is vast, and the battles can be tricky if you don’t plan ahead. ... show more

First off, this is an amazing game. Great characters, great story, great fighting system. I also didn't need to grind levels even once to advance, which is a big plus! The job system is great and well balanced. It doesn't take forever to level up a job, which is a big step up from the previous games in this series. Its only a few little things that stop this from being five stars. First, no maps in the dungeons. This doesn't seem like a big deal, but I lost count of the times I got turned around and ended up in the wrong place. If you have a map in the overworld, why not the dungeons?! Second, some of the side quests are horrible. Having to run back and forth between NPC'S delivering messages just ground everything to a hault. Your grandfather is 10 steps away, go tell him yourself! It would be different if the rewards were better, but most of the time it isn't worth it. Finally, as great as the job system is, some of the jobs are borderline worthless. There is just no point to them at all. Overall a fantastic game. I haven't had this much fun with an RPG since Octopath Traveler. But just a few little fixes are needed to make this a five star game. ... show more

This game definitely has elements of "old-school" JRPG difficulty, but it has a very interesting class system that makes grinding highly rewarding. The story isn't exceptional, but the characters are likeable enough and the gameplay makes up for any shortcomings otherwise. I had heard of, but never played, Bravely Default and Bravely Second (the direct sequel to the original) on 3DS, and while I wasn't against it, it didn't really catch my eye all that much, either. When I first saw Bravely Default 2 in the Nintendo Direct, however, and heard someone say you could get into it without playing the original, I was pretty eager to try it out. I instead wound up getting it as a Christmas gift for someone else, but was able to try it for myself and wound up playing it more than they did (the difficulty was a bit much for them, but I went through the effort of 100%-ing the whole thing because I loved it so much). Now if I could just get *them* to actually finish it. ... show more

Having beaten this game, and gotten the True Ending, I can say that the various Professional and Amateur reviewers out there who rate the story as bad or generic simply haven't done so. In fact I doubt they have beaten the prologue, let alone gotten to the amazing chapters and character moments later in the game. There are also a lot of complaints about difficulty and grind, and it is early on, however it quickly becomes absurdly and purposely easy to break both the grind and the combat system to rapidly level Jobs. They even tell you how to and give you items you really don't need to help you rapidly acquire JP. Bosses are challenging, but they all have a gimmick and weaknesses which you are directly given tools to break. Ultimately it turns from ons of the hardest games to one of the most amazing and satisfying turn based combat systems. Frankly, it is the best JRPG Square has put out in ages. ... show more

New story. Good follow-up to a series that began on the 3DS. But its bit much less without all the town reconstruction aspects of the game. If ya enjoyed the original Bravely Default and Bravely Second, ya are gonna enjoy this game. But just keep in mind that there is a little less in this game over the ones on the 3DS. Seems this game was made with porting it to other systems in mind than be stuck on the dual screen type of system. ... show more
