HOW TO CHECK IF YOU NEED THIS TOOL OR NOT? 1. You will do some brake jobs. 2. Your disc brake system has twin, quad and sextuplet pistons fixed calipers, or single and twin pistons floating calipers. 3. Your caliper pistons do not require being turned when pressing them back. 4. The spreader can expand from 1-1/2" to 2-1/2" for 2PCS small spreader plates, and 2" to 3" when adding 2PCS big spreader plates. If your caliper is wider, you can use old pads to lay across and then use this to push pistons back in. 5. You want to save your time and effort, and protect your piston from a block of wood or a C clamp. This tool works, but it is limited in it’s design. Luckily, it is easy to overcome the issues I had by making your own shims to be able to use the tool with “some” model cars, let me further explain. I have a 2015 Mercedes Benz SL400 roadster, which comes equipped with 4 piston Brembo calipers. These calipers are HUGE, and there are 2 pistons per side that need to be pushed back to insert the replacement pads. I managed to complete 1 side of my car using 2 C-clamps and was able to use the old pad to keep 1 of the pistons pushed back. The problem is when you push back 1 of the 4 calipers, it forces the other 3 to push out. So, it is similar to Wack-a-mole, and you need more than 1 clamp. I was lucky in that one of my C-clamps had a dual head, but even with this the task was far from easy. I looked on Amazon and found this tool for around $20 (Dec2023) and figured I would try it out. The design works well, but the fault in that design is that the tool does not open wide enough to push back the pistons. I solved this by cutting some ¼” plywood spacers the same size as the plates on the tool, and then I use adhesive magnet pads to allow me to mount the spacers so they would not fall out. While this worked, my magnets were not very strong, so I am going to switch to Velcro. Since they give you some longer spacers to cover even larger calipers (I thought the Benz calipers were big, I guess the length spacers are for trucks?), I do not see why they cannot give you spacers to increase the width about ½ total, ¼” per side and magnetically attachable to the tool. I am only going to deduct 1 star because of this, and it was simple to overcome. The tool seems sturdy enough and the racket works well, I have no fault with the operation of the tool, just the layout and lack of spacers for width. What makes me wonder if they really tested this tool is that my car is the exact target market for buyers, people with multiple pistons that need to be pushed back for service. Multiple Benz autos use these same calipers, so I guess they did not thoroughly test this tool with many of the cars on the market. I will include some pictures of my homemade spacers; it took me about 2 minutes to cut them and apply the magnetic backing. Overall, this is a good tool, and if you have a multi-piston caliper it will help you swapping pads. Since it seems the overseas vendors read reviews and alter their products better than US based companies, I took the time to write this review carefully to explain what is needed with the next iteration/improvement of this nice tool. ... show more

Did not fit on rear calipers of 2020 subaru ascent. Fit (barely) on the fronts - without the added plates. Works as intended - if it fits. I would buy the cheap $7 tool from autozone or oriely called a "Break Pad Spreader" looks like a screw with a steel plate on one side. Works way better.

    • Ratcheting function not working and weak magnets scream poor quality

The idea is great, the quality is poor. The ratcheting function did not consistently work out of the box. I had to play with it constantly to get the wratchet to engage and couldn't figure out anything to make it work well and stay engaged. I will be returning based on poor functional quality. The magnets don't hold the larger plates firmly. It is a three-ring circus to use this thing. If I were a professional, forget about it, as it would be a waste of time, and money, and a significant source of frustration. Recommendation to the manufacturer of this product: #1. Make the ratcheting mechanism better so it actually works consistently. #2. Use stonger magnets so add on plates stay and take a litlte work to disconnect. Do the above and I'd be keeping your product. Maybe I got a bad sample. Others complain of the same issues so unsure why this product is rated as well as it is. Based on the one I received, I can't recommend this product to anybody. ... show more
