‘Your title is the first barrier to a sales conversion’
Format: Kindle
Book marketer/publicist Scott Lorenz is very highly regarded in the literary world because of his gift for sailing books from birth to bestseller - a guide with a roadmap to success for many contemporary authors. One of the many reasons he is successful is his ability to offer wise counsel in a manner that mirrors a conversation with a best friend. He now has written a book that more than likely will become a staple in the armamentarium of all writers, both new and experienced, a book that succinctly and professionally advises authors about the importance of choosing a book’s title. A trait that suffuses Scott’s writing is his wry sense of humor, a quality that keeps the impact of his advice comfortably accessible. He finds key words to underline his message – words like ‘discoverability’ – that keep the reader focused on the mission of his lesson. And of course, as the expert, he states it best: ‘The book you are reading now is the definitive guide to understanding what makes an effective book title. Over the following pages, I will discuss specific areas and methods that employed properly will help draw attention to your book, giving it the broadest possible audience, converted into the only bottom line that really matters: sales.’ Roadmap established, and the book is launched. Each chapter is introduced with a quote from very well known literary figures, a wise backup for his topic being addressed. The contents of the book cover the importance of the following thoughts – correct keywords (very important in securing search engine discoverability on Amazon, Google, etc), wisely using the most possible space for the title (something that will fit on a thumbnail on a cell phone!), mastering the use of emotional words, using alliteration and poetry, numbers/alliterations/idioms, utilizing a series title, the use of Pen names (how and why and if), genre mash-ups/parody/contradictions, and the new impact of the use of profanity. Each of these topics is discussed with Scott’s droll humor. The book is brief but packed full of key advice on creating the right title for a book that is critical to success. This is an indispensible, first rate adjunct to the art of writing – and selling- your book. The goal: discoverability! Very highly recommended. Grady Harp, May 20 ... show more

An Essential Guide To Book Titles
Format: Kindle
It was Shakespeare who coined the phrase, “What’s in a name?” When it comes to the naming or titling a book, as veteran marketing expert and book publicist extraordinaire Scott Lorenz’s “Book Title Generator: Proven Strategies to Name Your Book” makes clear, the answer is more complex than you might think. In fact, Lorenz makes the case that finding the right title for a book means the difference between that book’s success or failure. This book makes a solid case for why books fail or succeed based on years of firsthand experience and real-life examples. The result is an easy to read and essential primer on how to use basic research and insight, provided by Lorenz in a very conversational and understandable manner. Whether you are writing you first or your fifth book, Lorenz presents a step-by-step formula to giving yourself the best chance to get noticed among the thousands released every week. Scott Lorenz, President of Westwind Communications, has been working with authors and entrepreneurs for more than 40 years to help them get publicity in the always changing media world. His firsthand knowledge of what makes a book succeed or fail has helped authors of every imaginable background and genre to receive the attention they so desperately need to stand out from the rest of the pack. In these nine chapters, Lorenz provides the basic building blocks to finding the perfect title for your book “from defining keywords/keyword phrases to discussions of everything from poetry to profanity.” Beginning every chapter with a pertinent quote from bestselling authors, “Book Title Generator” explains how choosing the best possible title to get your book noticed is not as simple or whimsical as it might appear. As he writes, “Some authors want to believe they can make something up, slap it on the cover and leave it at that. Whatever sounds snappy or catchy at the moment should be okay, right? Wrong.” Scott delves deeply into the concept of “discoverability” or as he writes, “doing everything possible to get your book in front of the right prospective readers, forcing them to take notice of you and your message.” Each chapter is dedicated to a distinct facet of this, from selecting the right keywords to wisely using the correct amount of space and mastering the use of emotional words. He also discusses the use of alliteration in book titles, the use of numbers, allusions and idioms and even the benefits of using pen names when warranted. Along the way, Lorenz uses real-life examples from the bestselling books in publishing history to prove his points. He gives examples and offers suggestions for choosing the particular words (and sometimes numbers) to go into your book title. The result is a deeply thoughtful and well-researched excursion into today’s world of book publishing that will give you the ABCs and XYZs of picking the perfect title for that book you have put your heart into. It’s required reading for aspiring and even experienced writers. ... show more

Required reading for anyone who writes books! Highly recommend this important resource.
Format: Kindle
As a writer, one of the more difficult tasks is finding the perfect title for my books! I found Scott Lorenz’s Book Title Generator: Proven Strategies in Naming Your Book to be filled with excellent advice and timely tips. Lorenz, a book publicist who has worked with bestselling authors, offers up-to-date and relevant information, and he convinced me that the success of my books relies heavily on their titles! He provides actual examples, and includes covers with titles to support his argument that a book’s success (or lack of success) is partially based on the strength of the title. This book is a very quick read, and I finished it in one sitting. I highlighted several important nuggets of information, including resources, as I will definitely refer to this book in the future. The chapters are brief yet packed with great advice. The author explores “discoverability,” and points out that authors can’t simply randomly choose a title and expect success. It is far more important to use appropriate keywords, get your book presented to the right audience, and get them to actually notice your book. The title is one of the most important elements (if not THE most important!). Lorenz also explores spacing, word count, using profanity or emotionally-charged words. The author includes information about the use of alliteration, numbers, allusions, and idioms. He also touches on the use of pen names, which I found really interesting. I really appreciated the fact that Lorenz used real examples from the bestselling books to lend strength to his argument. With 40 years of experience, he has the experience and knowledge to easily make his case. This book is an important resource for writers, as it is a well-researched tool based in a solid foundation – with the most current information. Whatever genre, whether you write fiction or non-fiction, whether you are an experienced writer or just starting your first novel - this book will be a helpful tool for you. In fact, I would argue it is required reading for any author who has published (or hopes to write) books. Though this book is easy to understand and some of the concepts seem obvious, Lorenz packages the information perfectly and describes the easy yet critical step of simple research, providing a step-by-step process that will allow ANY author the opportunity to make his/her book stand out among the thousands of books released each month on Amazon. ... show more

Great book filled with relevant information!
Format: Kindle
As writers, I think it’s safe to say we all appreciate the power of words. No sentiment is truer for the “first words” your readers will ever read: the title of your book! This book is an excellent resource for any author, new or established to have the best chance at success with creating a captivating and marketable title! Teachers of writing, from creative to non-fiction, would benefit from the extensive information packed into this easy read! Some of the more notable chapters that struck a chord with me were how important the subtitles in your title are. Who knew? Or finding the best keywords to utilize, that not only make your book eye-catching, but profitable. The author gives easy instruction on some great additional research ideas to ensure you are naming your book with the best chance of success. The book is filled with tips to help name your work so it will fit in the right category of genre you are aiming for. As a matter of fact, this book had an entire chapter devoted to additional resources! Have you even considered whether to use the numeric format of a number in your title or spell it out? ( Think Fifty Shades of Grey vs. The 4-hour Work Week) This author gives you ample points to consider. I highly recommend this book if you are seeking to compete and be relevant in the current trends of becoming a successful author! ... show more

Here in this book is good information about book titles specifically. Ideas about what to choose for the title of the book, and things to consider such as keywords (to help the book be found in the search engine), using curse words in your title, using idioms to your advantage, length of the title, and more are discussed here. The title is so important to capture the essence of your book and to grab a reader's attention. ... show more

5 Titles You Meet in Writing
Format: Kindle
This book neatly and succinctly explains all strategies to create an engaging title, and why each of those strategies is important. The author introduces a new metric I had not heard of as a lay reader: Discoverability. Discoverability: as the author defines it, is the likelihood that a book (which is usually noticed first by the title) is seen, or discovered, by the author’s target audience. It is not an absolute, scientific metric, there were no numbers involved. There is only logical inference that doing a certain thing increases Discoverability, or doing another thing decreases Discoverability. The book references GoodReads.com, and it’s accompanying lists of best-selling books for every genre, quite often. One thing that I didn’t expect, although it is quite important to selling books, was advice about whether to use a pen name or not. Some excellent advice was to use emotive imagery for adult fiction and to use alliteration for younger audiences. The author talks about how beneficial numbers can be in a title, but I would say only if they are relevant. Personally, I have never been interested in reading “13 Reasons Why” or “The 5 People You Meet In Heaven” because of the numbers in the titles. Those numbers seem arbitrary. I think people are tired of magazine/online articles like “73 ways to slim down” or “48 ways your dentist is hitting on you” for that reason. However, if the numbers are integrally and knowingly related to the story, that sounds catchy. A sports romance titled “My 4 Covered Bases”, for example. Allusion is also great advice. The author mentions the Bible and Shakespeare to be the most popular allusions. I would add that you can also allude to worlds that are popular in your chosen genre. If the book is a young adult fantasy with a female lead, an example could be “She-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named”. I would recommend this book to anyone not familiar with the significance of an engaging title. ... show more
