Description

Book 4 Grandfather Clocks: Clockmakers Newsletter Workshop Series. Floor- standing clocks have remained popular for hundreds of years. They are an important source of work for many repairers. In this ambitious series, planned for 10 books, Steven G. Conover edits the 256 issues of his Clockmakers Newsletter into workshop manuals, reorganized by subject. The first chapter of Book 4 presents the Newsletter content on 18th and early 19th century antique bell strike tall clocks from the British Isles and the U.S. Typical concerns are escapement defects, worn gear teeth, broken parts, and poor repairs. Problems are worsened by the extra-heavy weights intended to keep these clocks working for extended periods. The rest of the book covers modern-era, rod chime grandfather clocks in detail. Since the end of World War II, American clock companies have installed German movements in American cases. Repairs to these movements are often specific to the manufacturer, so there are separate chapters devoted to the mechanisms made by Urgos, Hermle, Kieninger, and others. This 147-page book has 240 photos and drawings and an index. The page size is 8-1/2 x 11 inches, with card stock covers protected by clear acetate. The plastic comb binding allows the book to lie flat on the workbench for easy reference. Read more

Important information but it requires at least Book 1 for the novice. The author was kind enough to respond to a question with helpful tips.
