  • After reading this book, anyone can begin growing their own bonsai tree
At the end of January, I received a wonderful birthday gift – a 12-year-old Buddha Pine (Podocarpus macrophyllus). I already had some basic knowledge about bonsai. So, James Takahashi’s new book Bonsai for the Beginner arrived just in time. As the title suggests, the book is for beginners. It provides just the right amount of information—not too much, not too little—to help understand what bonsai is, whether it's something you'd enjoy, and how to start your own bonsai at home. The book is written in a simple and clear language, which is great because it is aimed at beginners. What I liked most about this book is that, unlike many others, it reads like a beautiful story about bonsai culture—its essence and an invitation for anyone interested to join in. The author not only gives valuable tips on daily bonsai care but also shares his personal perspective, experiences, and feelings. In today’s impersonal world, this makes the book even more special. Through his storytelling and step-by-step guidance, the author inspires readers to see beauty, strength, and harmony in nature—and to bring a small piece of it into their own homes or gardens. Anyone can start caring for bonsai at any age, any time, and anywhere. After reading this book, anyone can begin growing their own bonsai tree. Best of all, this book has no real ending—the journey continues with every reader and their bonsai. ... show more

  • Bonsai for Beginners by James Takahashi
This book was recommended to me by a friend. It’s about mindfulness. As I have learned there are different techniques for mindfulness and this book teaches yet another technique: it teaches the enthusiast to acquire a bonsai tree and enjoy the philosophy of Zen Buddhism in Japan emphasizing simplicity and the beauty of the miniature tree. As the reader goes through the motions of caring for the Bonsai, he or she takes his/ her mind away from the everyday life and focuses on this beautiful nature of this plant and through time it becomes a practice. Interestingly and strangely as I go through my life walking the streets where I live, every time I see a Bonsai in a garden or as a display in a store or even a poster of a Bonsai, it relaxes my inner being for however long it lasts. I believe as the study of mindfulness this becomes a habit to prolong the duration one can put themselves in that trance of focus to take our mind away from the stresses into a state of natural beauty and relaxation. I recommend this book to everyone. ... show more

  • Not Just For The Beginner
The title of the book, Bonsai For Beginners, doesn’t nearly describe this wonderful book. Of course Mr. Takahashi gives any beginner the things they need to get started –history and different styles, the best trees to start with, wiring, soil, tools, and basic care. He makes this easy and presents this more clearly and concisely than many beginner books I have read before. What truly makes this book special is how Mr. Takahashi takes you deeper into the fascination with bonsai. He honors the special connection anyone enamored with bonsai feels: from our first enchantment with seeing one of these beautiful trees to deciding to care for and cultivate our own bonsai. As he shares the basics of care, he encourages ways we can enhance our awareness of and connection with these trees. He offers mindful practices and daily journaling suggestions that will enhance the experience and skills of a bonsai artist at any level. He writes openly from his journey of working with bonsai. If you are interested in delving into this art and the deep connection with nature, you will feel the kindred spirit you have in the author. I’m excited to implement the ideas from this book in working on my own bonsai. Highly recommended. ... show more

  • Beautifully written
This is an awesome book. My husband and I went to one of our local gardens and I was fascinated at the Bonsai trees they had on display. When we were leaving I visited the gift store and in their live plant section they had trees for sale. That’s the back story. I read this book because I had no idea to take care of a bonsai. It has answered all my questions and gave me insight into so much more. Bonsai is more than a tiny tree, it’s living art. It teaches you patience and mindfulness. Encourages peace and being one with your tree. After reading the first chapter and looked at my tree I originally thought of it as a her, but no it’s definitely a him and in my eyes he looks like an eagle, strong and resilient. Thank you for this book. ... show more

  • Read this BEFORE or WHEN you buy your bonsai
I definitely wish I had this book before killing my two bonsai :( I had a beautiful wisteria tree and a cute little juniper bonsai--I overwatered them at times and then underwatered them all the other times. I can’t recommend it highly enough! As someone with who has killed 2 bonsai trees already prior to reading this book, I was intimidated by the idea of bonsai. This book has made me feel more confident about the process and has made it accessible, engaging, and genuinely enjoyable. The author breaks down complex techniques into clear, step-by-step instructions, covering everything from selecting the right tree to pruning, wiring, and styling. What sets this apart is its beginner-friendly approach without feeling oversimplified. It’s packed with practical tips, like how to avoid common mistakes and how to choose tools on a budget. If you’re curious about bonsai or want a new hobby that combines art, nature, and mindfulness, this book is the perfect starting point. It’s a must-have for beginners and a gem for anyone looking to bring a little living art into their life! ... show more
