I shopped extensively for a home gym and through tireless experience and comparison chose the G3S by Body Solid. It was available and in stock which is a real plus. I did shop other Body Solid models but was quoted 1-2 months before the item would ship from the distributor warehouse. One of my concerns was the availability of a 210 lb. weight stack. The G3S is a 160 lb. machine but can be increased to 210 lb. by purchasing the SP50 which is an extra 5 plates. The G3S comes with enough labels to label up to 210 lbs. of plates. The gym arrived in 6-7 boxes on a skid. Three large boxes and 4 small boxes containing the weight plates. Assembly takes better part of a day followed by tuning. The instruction manual is excellent. This gym is awesome, I love it. I gave up my Olympic bench and weights and purchased this machine so my wife would also be able to work out. She loves it which is a great relief. It looks awesome in the work out room and I find myself gravitating to it all of the time to exercise. ... show more

I have not even received this item yet, and I encourage you NOT to buy this item due to the shipping ineptitudes alone. For example, I received an email from Body Basics with the UPS tracing number for this merchandise. Upon tracking the shipment, I discovered it was at my destination city on July 21st, and UPS showed a 07/21/10 estimated delivery date. Having not received the item on July 22nd, I decided to give UPS a call to ask when they planned on delivering it. I was informed by the UPS agent that, because it is a residential delivery, UPS was not going to deliver it until I called for an appointment. Curious why Amazon or UPS would be unable to connect the dots that a HOME GYM will most likely be a residential delivery. Hello! Don't most home gyms go to homes instead of businesses? Furthermore, the "appointment" UPS offered was akin to a cable company's playbook as my choice was between 9:00am and 1:00pm or between 1:00pm and 5:00pm. Wow - that's not exactly a narrow window.     • Everything I had Expected
Just purchased the G3S for $849. Took about 4 hours to assemble, but overall the instructions were clear and no big problems. The gym is sturdy and provides multiple different options to get a gym-like workout. The pulleys are smooth and quiet. I do mainly upper body workouts, so I did not get the lower body attachments. Definitely would recommend in this price range. ... show more

    • Great Equipment
Bought this set originally in 2002 for $500. It was fantastic but when I had to move to the West Coast, I had to leave it. But I found the exact model on Craig's List last year and managed to get it for a very low price. Even with the higher price point, this set is indestructible. Appearance - Fit and finish is nicely done. Not as nice as the more expensive Inspire line, but, still reasonably attractive. Cable Motion - Smooth, meets expectations, with little or no play. Delivery - 6 boxes each weighing 60 lbs or less arrive on a wood pallet. One person can manage. Assembly Difficulty - The number of parts can be overwhelming when unpackaged. However, instructions are good and having common sense a plus. Recommend that all parts, especially, bolts, nuts, washers, ... be segregated and labeled (per assigned part#) and placed in piles before starting. Assembly Time - One person can figure on spending 8-10 hours. Two people may be able to knock it out in 6 hours or so. Assembly Tools Required - box cutter; scissors; 17mm and 19mm sockets and corresponding box-end wrenches; rubber mallet or block of wood; cordless drill with hex bits may save some time; screw driver; silicon spray (recommend spraying pulley channels before assembly while they are in their shipping box). Foot Print - Roughly 7 ft. x 4 ft. Weight Stack - 160 lbs. (with optional 210 lbs weight stack). For 99% of the population, the 160 lbs stack is adequate. The other 1% of the population would not by the G3S anyway. Warrany - Lifetime Customer Service - Body Solid customer service is excellent. They answer the phone promptly, professionally, and respectfully. I had a few minor issues with parts and they replaced them with no hassle. It is apparent their goal is to satisfy their customers. Projected Durability - For home use, I believe this unit should provide a lifetime of trouble-free operation. Maintenance - Recommend a periodic application of silicon on the cable pulley channels to keep the operation of the cables nice and smooth. Competitors - I believe the closest competitor is the Inspire M1 which is a very nice product and an aesthetically nicer looking unit (somewhat hi-tech). However, at over double the price of the G3S while providing similar functionality and quality, it is hard to justify the added cost. Final Thoughts - I'm 6' tall, 210 lbs and I'm pleased with the unit. My wife is 5'3" and has found the unit to be equally functional. For me, what could make this unit even better would be the inclusion of a revolving cable curl bar and a set of foam covered cable handles (of course these can be purchased extra for about another $75). Also, it would be nice if the vertical chest press included a remote handle-bar pin release that worked like a bicycle hand-brake. The Inspire M4 unit has this feature and it certainly makes for an easy means of repositioning the vertical chest press handle-bars. If you shop around (including making some phone calls), you can get this unit for around $750 w/ no tax and free delivery. ... show more
