The lead actress, Rosie McEwan, will be a legend someday. That’s how great this performance is. It’s a stunning portrayal of what gays and lesbians had to do just to survive during the years before they were protected under the law, how having any type of whisper campaign could ruin everything you worked to earn. The film takes us to the north of England during Margaret Thatcher’s reign of terror, where a quiet phys ed teacher is just trying to keep her job at a local school. She tries to date a more butch femme, she keeps a small circle of lesbian friends at the local girl bar, and isn’t trying to push her life choices onto those in her life who know her truth. All of that is compromised by the arrival of an awkward teenager who ends up at that watering hole, as well as her phys ed class. With her secret exposed to someone who can out her at school, while also trying to infiltrate her friends circle, Jean is left to always fret about what can happen next, until an incident at school forces her into a snap choice. This is an excellently created film from start to finish. McEwan has incredible eyes and they always reveal what she’s feeling all the time. She is an unforgettable figure, giving off “Legend of Billie Jean” feminine toughness and vulnerability. Many people will never understand what it is to lose your job or your family because of a secret that no one can know, and this portrait of what that can do to a person should be the blueprint for how it should never be allowed to happen to anyone again. This is a fantastic, must-see movie, not matter your orientation or gender. ... show more

  • Superb story-telling and acting in indie drama
Terrific, well-written drama with superb performances by the lead and supporting actresses (Rosy McEwan and Kerrie Hayes). "Blue Jean" tells the story of a lesbian gym teacher forced to repress her identity due to an anti-gay law in the United Kingdom in the 1980s. It's very relevant given the passage of "Don't Say Gay" laws currently in the US. In addition to Jean's struggle, the movie includes a compelling plot line about a lesbian student and what responsibility Jean (and we) have to support future generations to lead honest, open lives. The movie evokes the time period and atmosphere of repression very well. It is slow-moving but, at 95 minutes, not over-long in developing its character-driven story. "Blue Jean" won several British Independent Film Awards for writing and acting. It's an outstanding feature film debut by writer-director Georgia Oakley. I will watch for her work in the future. Highly recommended for anyone who appreciates good, solid personal drama and of special interest to lesbians and gay men. ... show more

  • Blue Jean won’t give you the blues!
What a great period Peace. You really feel like you’re in the 70s from the attitudes of the era, the clothing, the food. Having grown up in that era, it was a very immersive experience. Good movie, highly recommended with a very satisfying ending.

  • sweet lesbian drama
A story of trying to survive in a world hostile to who you are, how to be a role model and still keep your livelyhood safe... very relatable and sweet. I liked the butch visibility also!

  • Wonderful
The actors did a great job! The movie was very poignant and relevant even today, at least in the US. We need more movies like this. Being gay is still political.
