Description

The incredible and gripping true story of one of the most spectacular and audacious escapes of the 20th Century! In the summer of 1979, following years careful of planning, two East German families attempt the impossible. In a makeshift hot-air balloon, the group risk their lives and fly the rickety craft towards West Germany with hopes of freedom and a better life. Unfortunately, the balloon crash-lands just before they reach the West German border and the Stasi soon discover evidence of the attempted escape. In a nerve-wracking race against the clock, the two families must now rush to build a new escape balloon before the notorious Stasi can catch them. • Excellent retelling of a gripping true story
I was in high school when this escape took place and remember discussing it in German class. When Night Crossing was released, I watched it at the theater and enjoyed it, and in later years rewatched it on rented videos (VHS or DVD). It's a good effort to tell a compelling true story, but the acting is a little cheesy and production values then were not what they are now. This newer film of the same story, Balloon, is much better done. If you are ok with subtitled films and can access the subtitles on your device, I'd recommend it. Everything about Balloon is superior: writing, acting, cinematography, directing, etc. The biggest difference is the sense of urgency and suspense that is lacking in Night Crossing is present throughout the entire movie of Balloon. Even knowing how the events would unfold before watching it, I was still caught up in the suspense. ... show more

  • Amazing story, told well
It's not easy to create a successful suspense drama, when the audience knows how it will end before the film even starts. "Day of the Jackal" succeeded (the audience knew going in that De Gaulle would not be assassinated). "13 Minutes" failed (the audience knew that the beer hall bomb plot against Hitler would fail). "Balloon" works! The suspense is tight as a bowstring from start to finish. VERY impressive! Great bonus too: The viewer gets to see how stultifying life in the GDR was. Balloon conveys an excellent sense of time and place. My favorite East German joke: The GDR president goes to a window at sunrise and says, "Good morning, Comrade Sun." The sun replies. "A pleasant good morning to you also, Comrade President Honecker!" At Noon, Honecker says, "Good afternoon, Comrade Sun." The sun replies, "And to you also, Comrade President!" At sunset, Honecker says, "A very good evening to you, Comrade Sun." The sun replies, "Oh go to hell, Honecker! I'm in the west now." ... show more

  • Really Well Done!
I've always enjoyed the 1982 "Night Crossing" film. "Balloon" tells the same story, but in a different, and I daresay, a more authentic way. I loved that the film was entirely in German. English subtitles worked perfectly. The movie is incredibly tense! I cannot recommend this one highly enough!!!

  • Great Movie about an incredible real story!
Skip the 1982 Night Crossing movie, and watch this instead. I won't give away spoilers, but an awesome, nail biting story.
