As a sunglass connoisseur with a collection ranging from $3 polarized Chinese safety glasses to $200–$400 Oakleys, Costas, and Ray-Bans, I’ve been on a long hunt for true “throwaway” sunglasses—something better than Pugs, Foster Grants, or whatever’s hanging at Walmart or a gas station, but still affordable. I picked up a matte black pair of Blenders, and: They’re decent. Lens quality is a step above your typical convenience store shades, but they’re still not in the same league as higher-end brands. The frame, however, is where Blenders shine. They feel surprisingly durable—sturdy, comfortable, and more solid than even some of my high-end pairs. Compared to my Costa Rincons (which retail around $180), the Blenders actually feel sturdier in the hand, though obviously the optics don’t compare. Like with most budget sunglasses, compromises exist for a reason. Blenders fall into the same category as brands like Shady Rays, and I own both. At a similar price point, Shady Rays have noticeably better lenses—sharper, more vibrant, and just cleaner overall. The tradeoff? Their frames are garbage. I’ve had multiple pairs of shady rays break while these blenders seem like they’ll hold up. These glasses are not game-changing for the lower middle range sunglasses options ($60-$100) but they are a solid option—and better than anything that you’ll find hanging on a rack at a gas station. It just comes down to use. Looking for something to last a while with a decent lens? It’ll do fine. I think if I was purchasing with longevity in mind these blenders would be the clear middle range option. I've gotten more compliments on these glasses than any other that I've worn. They have a nice brown tint to them and they work great for seeing past the glare of water while fishing. They've been dropped multiple times and have no damage other than the lens popping out, which pop right back into place. ... show more
