  • Very happy with this putchase
Style: 550 lb capacity Configuration: Workbench
To all those who wrote comments on how difficult this was to assemble and how the directions were worthless… they should not be doing anything that requires a work bench. I do wood work part time and the assembly took 15 minutes and was super easy to follow. My shop is in the garage and don’t have a lot of space. This bench is perfect and very sturdy. Love that it folds up for quick storage. And the price is very reasonable. Very happy with this. ... show more

  • Easy to use
Style: 550 lb capacity Configuration: Workbench
This is a good sturdy bench for the homeowner. It is not intended to be commercial grade. I like it because I can move it around by myself and it has a lot of options to hold projects you are working on. I am 63 and don't bend in the middle well anymore lol and this keeps work easy to reach. Folds up to be stowed away out of the way. ... show more

  • The instructions are in Spanish.
Style: 550 lb capacity Configuration: Workbench
The table itself seems okay. I am using it to replace a twenty year old model that I have more or less worn out. It is a bit complicated to put together and operate. All the verbiage in the owner's manual is in Spanish. There are some pictures that are too small and not always self explanatory. I was able to find on-line videos that show the process. The same goes for operating the table. The first table-top slat is the one that operates like a vice and moves forward and back on a traveler when a crank is turned. The two travelers, left and right, were not aligned and it is difficult to align them. If they are no aligned, the vice slat will be out of alignment and won't clamp things square. Plus, it is hard to get things lined up to be fastened in place. The crank handles are connected so that if you turn one, say on the left, both handles turn, freeing one hand to hold your project in place while you clamp it. This feature only sort of works. The handle you are turning moves more than the other side. When fully put together and ready for use the table weighs about 40 pounds, which is heavy, but also why it is rated to hold up to 550 pounds. The table was well packaged and all the parts were present. There was no damage to anything. I think it is a good table to use for projects. My main beef was not having instructions. It is the bane of our time that so few products come with adequate instructions. ... show more

  • About what you'd expect at the price point
Style: 550 lb capacity Configuration: Workbench
I wanted a metal work bench, and since the vast majority are now plastic, my choices were rather limited. The assembly instructions weren't exactly clear. Note that the plastic mounts that tie the top to the base are of two types. The ones missing the protrusions are for the fixed (first) top piece nearest the clamp handles. Also, note the split roll pins for the mounting the clamps handles have a beveled edge which should be inserted first. I used the bench once for planning down a couple of solid core doors. The bench was a little wobbly while holding a heavy door. Also, the clamping strength was lacking. The plastic clips which hold the top to the base are not going to last. The top is already scratched up and dinged from the one project which was pretty mild. So, the top is soft, way too thin and flimsy. I'm sure I'll replace the top with 1.5" thick hardwood. The plastic dogs are pretty worthless. The base is metal and pretty sound. I will add a thin plywood shelf to the base to add temporary tool storage. This workbench has quite the following with numerous websites dedicated to it. You can find a lot of good ideas for modifying it. If you're willing to do a little work, you could have a decent, portable workbench. Unfortunately, I could not find a something nice right out of the box. At least, it's relatively cheap. ... show more

  • It serves its purpose.
Style: 550 lb capacity Configuration: Workbench
My husband has an old one he’s had for many years and he needed a second one. Aside from the top getting worn from a lot of use, it still works well. It’ll take years for the writing on the top to wear off if you keep it out of the weather.

  • The metal base is very sturdy and strong
Style: 550 lb capacity Configuration: Workbench
I did not have any trouble assembling and I feel that the complaints about the instructions are overblown. If the directions are too small, you can expand the PDF version of the instructions on the Black and Decker website. There are four identical top blocks, two of which attach to the rear jaw (which has "Black and Decker" printed on it). The other two attach to the center jaw(which has a degree scale printed on it) The rear jaw and center jaw are removable. The front jaw is not removable and has "Workmate 425" printed on it. I mention this, because at first I wasn't sure which jaw part went where. There are two blocks for the front jaw. The bolts pass through the front jaw, down through the front blocks and then the bolts thread into plastic blocks on the vise screws. That was the trickiest part and although I was able to do it by myself, a second pair of hands would have made it a little easier. The whole assembly process took 20 minutes including unpacking. The metal base is very sturdy and strong. The top is made out of solid wood which looks like laminated bamboo. My only concern is that the plastic top blocks could possibly break in the future, but so far no problem. I have a similar cheaper one made by another company that is as not sturdy and has a top made from MDF, so this one is a big improvement. I would suggest gluing the rubber feet on so that they don't eventually fall off. I was building a table so I used the WorkMate at two different heights which was handy. The four bottom feet can fold under to make it shorter. I had to hand-plane a couple of pieces of wood for the table and I was able to grip the wood with the jaws. I put my foot on the step to hold it steady while I was pushing the plane. No, its not ideal for planing, but it worked. No, this isn't the WorkMate from 20 years ago, but it is very useful to me since it work in several different configurations and then it folds up out of the way. Update: I have had this for several years now and have used it for many projects. Still works and looks good as new. Highly recommend. ... show more
