I've been wearing birkenstock milanos for about 20 years. I have a lot of sensory issues that make finding the right shoe a big challenge, so when i find something that works, i tend to latch on, and birks REALLY work for me. I've always felt that the standard milano that i wear was serviceable and comfortable--by far the most important characteristics in a shoe--the visual has always seemed...well, clunky. I'm fine with with clunky if it's comfortable, but if they could look a little more attractive... Reader, these maintain the standard birkenstock comfort, my biggest worry, and might even be MORE comfortable than your regular milano style. The foot bed is a regular width birk foot bed, not a narrow, so whatever you usually wear in birks will be fine in these. I'm not getting any rubs or uncomfortable binding spots, and if anything, i think i find it even easier than usual to get my foot into that sweet spot in the foot bed. And yes, i think they're more delicate looking than your standard birk, if a little slower to put on because the ankle strap does need to be buckled every time. For newcomers to the world of birkenstocks, i should mention that birks, far more than most sandals, will only get more comfortable the more you wear them. The cork foot bed is designed to compress and mold to your foot over time, so they feel less like wearing shoes and more like standing barefoot in sand. I believe some studies may have even indicated that they're especially good at correcting for some foot issues. If the foot bed doesn't feel right at first, give them a few weeks of wear around the house to break in; it won't be long before they start leaping out of the closet and onto your feet.

I originally ordered the Yara sandal in a size 39R because it said it would fit a US Women's size 9, but it was huge! I gave it to my cousin who is a size 10 and it fit her perfectly. I bought it again in the 38R and it fits perfectly! I have a bit of a wide foot, so it works for me. This is my first real pair of Birkenstocks, but after the breaking-in period, it's the most comfortable show I own, outside of my running shoes. The best part about the black patent is that I have been able to wear it out to dinner and nightclubs, and it feels sexy. I get compliments on these sandals all the time! A great investment for a shoe that I wear almost every day.

Update (Oct. 2017): I've had these sandals for four years (purchased Oct. 2013), and they are still going strong. They get almost daily wear in the summer, and light wear in the late spring and early fall. These are hands-down the best sandals I've ever owned, and I have not purchased any new sandals since buying these. Picture attached are the sandals after four years. Original review (Oct. 2013): My mom has a pair of Birkenstocks that she's had for ten years. So when it came time for a new pair of sandals, that's what I went looking for. This style is a great alternative to the more masculine grandpa style birks. They have all the same quality and build of traditional Birkenstocks, but with exponential cuteness. I wore them all summer without a hitch. No problems with the leather straps or the sole. They still look great. It took them about a week of heavy wear for the sole to mold to my feet. The soles got very dark, but other than that, they still look good as new. For the first few days, the toe looks was a little weird to get used to, but the leather softened up, and now I don't notice it at all. Great product. I would recommend them to anyone. They look great with a pair of jeans or a flirty dress. I would suggest ordering asize down, however. I normally wear a 40, but they were waaaay too big. Huge. So I took a chance and ordered a 38, and they fit perfect. 2 sizes smaller than my normal size.

I purchased a pair of the Yara Leather Ankle-Strap Birkenstocks in Habana (brown) early in my pregnancy, knowing that I'd want a pair of comfortable sandals with good arch support to get me through the summer; and I'm so glad I did! This is my first pair of Birkenstocks. I'd worn Naot's in college, but I read that Birks might be better for a wider foot, which I now have. Style: I can dress these up or down. I wouldn't wear them to something super formal, but I've worn them to an outdoor wedding and several nice dinners out. I've gotten several compliments on them. Fit: The footbed fits my slightly wider foot. They felt true to size. I ordered a pair of 38s - I typically wear a 7.5 (give or take half a size) in US shoes, and 38 usually works for me in European sizing. Comfort: I can walk all day in these, and my arches don't bother me. The adjustable straps have been great for the few occasions my feet have swollen up a bit. (My arches will start to hurt if I go barefoot for several hours at home or wear cute sandals with no arch support.) In general, I like having an ankle strap on my sandals. I've been happy that I got the version of these sandals with the ankle strap, but as I'm nearing the end of my pregnancy, I wish I had the version you can just slide your feet into.
