  • Really good and a fashion classic - sizing is way off
Size: 9-9.5 Color: Black Birkoflor
Tl;DR: The sizing of these shoes is off by 2 to 3 sizes, so if you usually wear a 9 you'll want to order a 7 or a 6.5. I bought these sandals after reading The Source: The Untold Story of Father Yod, Ya Ho Wa 13, and The Source Family, which I also bought on Amazon. In the book they are cited as a popular favorite sandal for the Source Family and since I'm going through a sort of obsession with their history and a general hippy life phase I decided to try these out to further my hippy-wear wardrobe. These sandals were very popular in the seventies primarily for two reasons: 1. There were no other shoes available at the time with orthopedic shaping for the feet in the US. 2. They were brought to the US and introduced to the hippy community by someone who was passionate about them after having acquired a pair in Germany, where Birkenstock originates. Having worn these sandals for a couple of days I must say that people in Europe must have freakishly long feet because when my toes rest over the pit where they are supposed to fit there's a good inch and a half to two inches behind my heal. I wear a US 9.5 and bought these in a 9. They appear to be about a size too large at least. In regard to their overall construction: The upper deck of the shoe is made from cork which is supposed to conform to your foot, but as mentioned unless you're a Sasquatch it is unlikely that will actually happen. This is one of the major complaints of these shoes: If they fit you they're very comfortable, but if they don't, they just don't. Because the foot bed is shaped like a food and it is rigid, you may have to try on several pairs before you find one that fits, which makes shopping for these shoes difficult. And even if you find a pair that fits, if you have any unusual features to your feet they probably won't match the shape of the shoe, so there's some measure of risk involved in purchasing these sandals. The "Birko-Flor" material appears to be a synthetic material sandwiched together in two layers with some kind of adhesive. After a couple of days of wear some of the fluff from my white socks has come off and lined the sticky edges of the straps, giving them a white rim. The material does not appear to be particularly durable, as it has already developed wrinkles after two adjustments of the straps. I am certain in time it will crack and that the layers will come apart. The lower portion of the sandal is made from the sort of "house shoe" material you find on cheaply made slippers for wear around the house. This is not surprising considering this sandal is used strictly for wear around the house in its home country of Germany, but I would have thought sometime in the last 40 years the company would have adapted the sandal for use in the US as Americans wear them by giving them a more solid lower rubber layer. These sandals are also particularly rigid. If you are used to newer-design shoes that flex with your step you may find these sandals hard to walk in and a bit noisy. They also have a tendency to fall off because of their rigidity, but this is also due in part to their overly large dimensions. Edit 12/22/21014: I was not able to order the color I wanted on Amazon because when I select a color and then a size on the order page the color reverts to something else. I was not able to find a combination of working the size and color selections that would produce a suitable combination, so I ordered them from Zappos (also an Amazon brand). Zappos offers the same two-day delivery as Amazon Prime, and if you order with their mobile app they will give you next day delivery for free, so I composed the order on their website through my computer, then logged into the app and checked out there. I finally got the correct size of these shoes after trying four pairs. Even though I need a size 9.5 US for most shoes I had to go down to a 7 in these shoes, which means their sizing is off by 2.5 to 3 sizes. ... show more

  • Only had them a week and they already feel like I've owned them for years
Size: 7-7.5 Narrow Women/5-5.5 Narrow Men Color: Stone Birkibuc
I bought my first pair of Birkenstock sandals about 4 years ago on sale at the mall. They were the Gizeh model, very cute. They eventually molded to the shape of my foot and became my default shoe ever since. Eventually I wore out the sole, and now I'm even wearing out part of the cork, so I decided to buy a new pair. (I know I can get the old ones repaired, but I really wanted a pair of Arizonas as well--plus if I repaired the old shoes without having a new backup pair, whatever would I wear?) When I bought my first pair on Amazon I had no idea about the different widths (narrow vs. regular). I didn't even pay attention to what my old sandal had said, whether the little foot icon was filled in (indicating narrow width) or just an outline (regular). And now all the writing is worn out in them, so I can't tell either way. I figured since I'm a regular width in everything else, I'll buy my usual size (women's 7.5 equals 38 in Birkenstock). So I bought a 38M at first, but that was a mistake. They were so wide on me! And I don't buy narrow sizes in any other shoe. So I instead went for a 38N (which if I had read, is suitable for A-B widths, and most women's shoes are B width). They are PERFECT! As soon as I tried them on I loved them. The synthetic Birkibuc material is comfortable and stylish, and the stone color goes with anything. My coworker even thought they were leather! And now I can totally rock that "hippie socks with sandals" look. SO fashionable. ... show more

  • Love them. Why did I wait so long, when I could of felt this comfy years ago.
Size: 7-7.5 Narrow Women/5-5.5 Narrow Men Color: Brown Birko Flor
I love these from the very first time I pulled them out of the box. They arrived at my office and I put them on immediately and wore them all day with zero problems. No breaking in time. I bring both my Huskys to work with me and take them on random walks through out the day without any problems from my new Birkenstocks. I love them so much. They are like comfy slippers but look super cute on. After a run I cant wait to put these on again. I'm a constant size 8 and ordered them in dark brown in a 38 N (narrow) since I wanted them to look more chic, and they fit me perfectly( I do have a high arch). I probably couldn't wear them with socks though(bummer) its that perfect of a fit for me. I want to buy another pair maybe in black and I'll try a 39 N this time cuz the idea of wearing them with socks in the winter sounds cozy. But I live in Southern California so wearing them without socks is something I can do year around. As long as you get the perfect size you will love them. I figure N is for women and M is more ideal for men. ... show more

  • THE TRUE REASON BIRKS WERE CREATED, ALIENS CROSSBREED CORKS AND COWS!!!!!!!
Size: 14 Color: Brown
When your the leader of the MAFMA (Middle Aged Fat Mans Association), your screaming arches need all the help they can get. Thus the true reason Birks were made. You may hear differently, but No, they were made because a Fat Mans fallen arches. You can say that once our arches have fallen, that they be come our enemy, ( I give you a second get that one). I started wearing Birks when I was a middle aged teen, I was not fat back then, just really husky. If you still haven't figured it out, that was a reference too Arch Enemies a couple of sentences. I was once as slow as you but Birkenstocks changed that from me. They helped not only speedup my mind, but also my walking pace. Just think you can buy a set of these beauties, put them on and your brain will speed up, maybe, even up too the speed of my pace. A pair of Birks really is the best treat you can get for your feet. Men, once you place your order, run out and get a mani-peti, so you look super cool when you put your Birks arrive, and you first step in to that corked cloud of comfort. So in a nut shell, all I have to say is, BUYEM,BUYEM,BUYEM,BUYEM,BUYEM,BUYEM,BUYEM,BUYEM,BUYEM...........Did that get my point across, or did it just make things to weird between us. ANYwhoo, that my review, the ONLY ONE THAT MATTERS. ... show more
