  • What a Beast!!
This bit is outstanding! I have 70 year old black walnut rounds that I have had for ages from a stormfall. I built a flattening jig to process them with this bit and right away I hit a nail in the tree. IT CUT THE NAIL. I could find no damage to the inserts, and they were as sharp as ever! The walnut cut like butter and left a smooth finish behind, even after cutting through a nail! I own a CNC and after using this on my router, I'm going to upgrade my spindle to use this beast. ... show more

  • Great but that price
This is a great product and a delivers an excellent finish compared to the alternative of facing with say a 1/2" endmill. Runout seemed fine, although I did not put an indicator on it since it was fine up to 6,000 RPM. Inserts came installed with one that was almost impossible to get loose when I removed them to ensure there was no debris from manufacturing under the inserts before reinstalling. I think my only complaint is how the price on these just keeps going up. Two years ago you could find these for $60-80 but now they are getting close to breaking $100. ... show more

  • Solid bit for smoothing
This bit is a beast and does a great job removing material and leaving a smooth surface. The accuracy of the blades and sharpness made it easy to level out large pieces of raw material. The new wave of using replaceable carbide cutters instead of solid one-piece construction, ensures you have a sharp profile for many uses and able to rotate the cutting heads or replace them when they get dull. Highly recommend this for surface plaining with a heavy duty router jig set-up. ... show more

  • Big bit, not to be taken lightly
This is a hefty router bit; I'd recommend at least a 3HP router in use. It has 4 carbide cutters arranged on the perimeter of the 3" base; 2 horizontally and 2 vertically. Both are at a tilt off their planes. The bit and cutters are coated in that usual waxy rubber substance to protect it. I requested these to use as a slab leveler in my router that is cradled in a homemade movable trough (I'm sure you've seen those on the internet). There is no recommended RPM, in fact, absolutely no instructions or directions of any kind. The manufacturer assumes that if you're ordering this you know how to use it. Having said that, I would not run this huge bit any faster than 12000 RPMs and that might even be too fast. I'll have to experiment and provide an update. This is also a very heavy bit, so once the router gets up to speed, there will be a lot of momentum. Moving the router across the slab will have to be slow and of the thinnest slices. What I like the best is that it is a full 3" in diameter; this will shorten the elapsed time for each pass over the slab. Included, as you can see in the photos, was a small Torx screwdriver to loosen and rotate the carbide cutters to a fresh edge, which is a great edge extender. I have to say, I would torque down harder on the screws than what could be possible with that little finger screwdriver. Also included, were 4 spare screws...the presumption being we'd lose some of them...not a bad assumption. I'd recommend rotating all for at the same time. Once all four edges have been dulled, replacement 12mm cutters are readily available. As usual with router bits, out comes the caliper and as you can see in the photos both the diameter of the base and the shank were dead on to the specification. In use, in a router, this bit is a little daunting but going slow and engaging the cutters gingerly is the key. It's a little pricy but it's the right tool for the job. I am giving 4 stars because I would have liked another set of cutters to be included and a heftier screwdriver. PS. I looked at the Amazon page for this bit and confirmed that the manufacture's recommendation is also to run this bit no faster than 12000RPM, however, that is given for a 1/4" shank? ... show more

  • Great bit.
Wow this is a great bit. It is very sturdy with the 1/2” shank. The cutting blades are sharp and do not dull easily. This thing is excellent for surface flattening and can alot of material quickly. The large 3” diameter requires less passes when flattening out large boards. Very durable and gets the job done well. No negative issues report,.. highly recommend. ... show more

  • Beast Cutter!
This thing is a beast! Well made and perfectly balanced. I mainly use this to surface my CNC router spoilboard. Works perfectly for that. I have also used it to surface a few small hardwood slabs and it cut through them like butter. One note, as others have mentioned, make sure you have a real router or spindle in my case. Mine is 3HP and I definitely wouldn't go any smaller. ... show more

  • Aggressive bit
Pretty well balanced bit with an aggressive attitude. Chews thru wood like it’s nothing but the finish leaves a little to be desired. Didn’t expect a stain ready grade type of finish but does rip and tear fibers leaving filling and sanding work if after a nice finish. I used it to level a bench table top in a homemade sled with a 1 1/2 horsepower router with a 1/8 cut. Performed like it was a hot knife thru butter. ... show more

  • Heavy duty surfacing router bit
First of all, make sure that your router has the power to run this bit, it has a 1/2 in. shank and you'll want to be certain that your spindle or router can handle this. It is quite heavy and well made, so once up to RPM's there is a fair amount of momentum. There are 4 carbide inserts that come with the bit and can be removed with the Torx bit that is in the box. There are are also additional Torx screws available in case you may loose one of the existing ones. I couldn't find any RPM suggestions, but probably wouldn't want to move this past 10k if that. For a spoilboard surfacing bit, it will do the job, and the full 3" makes it possible that you don't have to make many smaller passes. Overall, I would recommend. ... show more
