  • More versatile than expected
I got this saw for a very specific purpose, repairing baseboard. I have since used it several time for unrelated cuts and it has moved into my "regular" saw rotation. It's small and agile with a pretty good handle and able to handle light duty cuts with aplomb. It also easily fits in my tool bag although I need to find a sheath or something, the little edge protectors that it comes with don't stay on. ... show more

  • A nice precision tool
This seems like a very nice precision tool. Once you pencil mark a piece of wood, work slowly and draw the blade towards you on the line. It's easy to make a nice straight starter groove. Once you have a groove, you can work faster and get a clean straight cut. I wonder how long the blade will stay sharp. The blade comes with plastic guards to place on the blades while in storage. ... show more

  • Smaller than others, but still a good saw.
I have used Japanese saws in the past, and after using one for the first time, fell in love with them. They are a completely different concept than traditional type saws. They cut on the pull stroke, they are very lightweight and easy to handle, the blade is slightly flexible, and they usually have teeth on both sides which are very sharp. I use them for a variety of tasks, mostly in finish work or cabinet and furniture making. They are very precise and accurate with a thin kerf. They work great when hanging doors, for cutting off the ends of shims, and quickly trimming spray foam. They seem to be able to stay sharp for a long time, even when cutting hardwoods. This particular saw has 17 teeth per inch on one side for ripping, and 14 teeth per inch on the other for crosscuts. With about a 6 inch blade, this is shorter than others that I have owned, but it may have other applications in that regard. While the blade has some flexibility, it is not as much as the other Japanese saw I still own. There are plastic slide-on teeth protectors, but they are not very tight and I would expect them to get lost quickly. This saw also seems to have a bit more drag than my other saw, probably because the blade is thicker. Overall, this is not the same quality as as my larger Japanese saw, but this is not the same price point either. At about $16, it is roughly 1/3 the price. So, I still consider this saw a pretty good product for the price. ... show more

  • MEH
The beauty of a Japanese style pullsaw is its thin blade. It makes a narrow kerf and can flex when needed for flush cutting. And, because it cuts on the pull stroke, it can also make very nice straight cuts as well. There are various styles of the Japanese pullsaw. The Japanese Ryoba-style pullsaw – which this BGASNW saw is modelled upon – is a general purpose tool, with teeth on both sides of the blade: one side has lower TPI for ripping wood and the other side has higher TPI for cross cutting wood. For clarity, the distance from the tip of one tooth on a saw blade to the tip of the next tooth is quoted in teeth per inch (T.P.I.). Generally, more TPI cuts slowly, but produces finer, smoother cuts and less TPI cuts faster, but makes coarser cuts. Higher TPI is also better for cutting thin material that might splinter or crack, like veneers. For wood cutting, the generally accepted range is from about 6TPI up to about 20TPI. This BGASNW Pullsaw has a 6” long blade and is configured with 14TPI on one side and 17TPI on the other side. For comparison, I purchased an entry-level Shark brand (Ryoba) Pullsaw years ago that has proven to be very handy. It has a 9.5” long blade configured with 9TPI on one side and 17TPI on the other side (these saws – and replacement blades - are still available on Amazon). It is a basic, average quality pullsaw. The shorter blade of the BGASNW saw means it is easier to store this saw in a tool box, but it also means that there will be more back-and-forth effort to cut the same amount as a longer (e.g., 9.5”) blade. The small difference in TPI between the two sides of the BGASNW saw also means relatively little performance difference on the cuts. Because the TPI is fairly high on both sides, the cuts will be fairly smooth of course - but the cutting rate will be relatively slow. Another important difference is that the blade is not replaceable on this BGASNW saw. So in the end, this BGASNW saw is not a bad pullsaw, but it’s not a great pullsaw either. ... show more

  • Hand saw
I've never used a Japanese hand saw before, but I'd been wanting to do more dowel joinery and figured I'd give this saw a try for the flush cuts. So far, I love it. It's way better than trying to use a hacksaw, like I'd been doing. It's super sharp and cuts easily and quickly. It's not quite as flexible as I would have expected and you do have to be careful not to gouge your workpiece when making flush cuts, but I'm super happy with it. For beginner/intermediate woodworkers who want to get their feet wet with a Japanese style flush saw, this is a great choice. ... show more

  • Blade can't be removed and replaced.
This is a review of the BGASNW Japanese style 6" blade hand saw. It is a fair Chinese facsimile of a Japanese flexible flush cut handsaw. The blade itself is flexible enough to get into tight spaces and it sports one side of 14 TPI for rip cuts and the other side has 17 TPI for cross cuts. In my opinion a minimum of 23 TPI is needed for harder woods. The handle is made of contoured Beech to fit the hand and is comfortable to hold, reasonable at this price point, though I prefer the handles that are hand-wrapped with Bamboo on other saws I own. The kerf is 1/40 " and will allow you to make accurate flush cuts if you take your time otherwise it does cause a bit of tear out that will have to be sanded out. The value for money aspect of this saw falls off dramatically because the handle is riveted to the blade so it can't be replaced, though there is a lifetime warranty for this product. This is a good economical choice for a novice, but not for the serious woodworker. ... show more

  • Indispensible
I never knew this type of saw existed and now I can't live without it. It is small and easy to use and it is SHARP. So perfect for little cuts you need to make around the house and it doesn't bend like a long wood saw does. You just pull off the ends and go to work. So convenient. It has two different cutting blade sizes and it makes such a clean cut. I never knew how much I needed this saw. ... show more
