  • Nice once mounted...BUT....
Looks nice and it is a solid mount. However I was missing 6 lock nuts and 4 bolts in the sealed package. Had a few other bolts which were to be used on a YJ or other than my TJ so they went in my bolt storage drawers. So the 30 minute job turned into a 1 and 1/2 hour project as I had to make a trip to the hardware store during installation. Would easily give 5 stars if all the correct hardware had been in the package. Installation was easy and drilling 3 holes in the tailgate and installing the expanding nuts was easy as well. All in all a nice useful product. But remember it is designed for up to 75#. More than that will overload the tailgate hinges. ... show more

  • Instructions: 1) Receive Item; 2) Head to hardware store.
Sorry Bestop, you got this rack only 90% right. Your foreign supplier includes bolts that are TOO SHORT. What good is a nylon-insert nut when the bolt threads are too short to reach the nylon to lock onto? Don't despair - the sizes are standard, but it will take at least one trip to the hardware store and maybe another $5 to get what you need. Certainly faster and cheaper than sending it all back. Once put together and mounted, it does hold the plastic tray very securely on the tailgate of my Jeep Wrangler. Oh yes, you'll also need longer bolts to secure the plate onto the tailgate, even if you have the Jeep stock tire mount. Take what they send you to the hardware store so you get the right diameter and pitch. Good luck - just schedule an extra hour to get it all done! Five Year Update: Its been five years and I still have my Jeep and the tray is still mounted on it. The hardware and the plastic tray have held up very well. The plastic tray spent every day for two years in the sun and heat while working in Death Valley and held up exceptionally. Then it enjoyed two winters at 7500 feet in Colorado. A minor amount warping, but not enough to compromise the structure. I haven't relied on the eye bolts to hold down the loads, but rather wrapped cinching straps directly to the tray sides. The metal frame remains straight throughout. I added a fourth star because it has been so durable. Other than the original nuts/bolts issues - it been a great purchase. ... show more

  • Good, but hardtops should note.
Don't know why others are having issues. Everything fit perfectly from the kit on my 2000 Jeep Wrangler. There was one issue that subtracted a star, though: If you have a hardtop, you'll need to mount your tray one bolt away from the rear of your Jeep. Otherwise, you won't be able to open your rear glass. ... show more

  • Wait, I have to drill holes in my 2004 ...
Wait, I have to drill holes in my 2004 Jeep's tailgate? I did not see this in the description anywhere. So, I guess everyone reviewing this rack either has an older than 2003 or an aftermarket tire carrier? I'm really debating on whether I should continue the instal or return this. Either way, I think this should be noted clearly BEFORE people make the purchase! EDIT: It has enough support before drilling. There are still 3 bolts on either side. this actually is a outer decent product. BestTop really needs to improve true instructions ... show more

  • Don't waste your money, to light weight to use.
Weak and flexes, bends with any weight put on it. I'm considering trashing it and getting a stronger frame. I put a small cooler with ice on the rack drove out on some hills and back and when I pulled the cooler off the rack I had to push up on the rack to level it so it doesn't look slumped on one side. ... show more

  • This design rocks forward & backward& broke the 4th time I used it on rougher roads.
I like the way it looks, but the design rocks forward & backward. Because of this oscillation/motion, 1 of the support bars broke the 4th time I used it on rough roads. It would probably be okay for asphalt/blacktop roads only.

  • I believe the issue other folks had with short screws ...
I believe the issue other folks had with short screws was due to the model year. The instructions are different for 2003 and older TJs vs, newer. I have a 1998 TJ and didn't run into a single issue. In fact, the install was a heck of a lot simpler than I thought it would be. Seems to be a solid and well-made rack. ... show more

  • Could be more sturdy.
I replaced the nuts on the bolts with wing-nuts so I can remove it more easily. It isn't solid enough that I'd trust a 5 gallon water cooler or food cooler while off-roading... Lucky for me I can drop it down to sit all the weight on my tire on my tire carrier and then it works well.
