I decided to update this review because it was written the day after I got the mats. I've now had them for nearly 8 years (4 months shy) and can speak to their durability/longevity. Interesting to read the most recent reviews and most seem to be complaining about rips at the seems. I've HAVE NOT experienced that. The handles did, however, come off of one of the mats (the one I use most) about 10 months in. Summary of use: - I bought 2 so I could use for solo BJJ drills at home - I use one more than the other because I'll sometimes jump rope on it or place under bench when doing DB flies or presses. That last use case is VERY rare, but I have used it like that more than a dozen times. These worked great for the first 6 months. Then, the one that I use for jump rope started to peel. This isn't that nice canvas or heavy duty tarp cover that you'd find in a traditional gymnastics or judo/bjj school. It's like a high density / high impact foam got covered with a very thin layer of latex paint. I've attached 3 pictures of what they look like now. One of the handles did rip completely off inside of a year. I ended up cutting the other off because it was useless at that point. The paint continued to peel off. I doubt it was defective because I wasn't noticing it on the other one, so I switched. Shortly after that other one started to get daily use, it started to peel the same way. I haven't used these all that much for the past few years (definitely not at all for past year) because it's a pain to have to clean up these black paint chips/shreds. THEY GET EVERYWHERE. * I deducted 2 starts from my previous rating. * I wasn't expecting these to last forever. * I was expecting that these would tear and wear down, not for the paint to brittle off within months. * They continue to be great mats for rolling. They continue to be as firm and impact resistant as when I first got them. * Seems (other than those on handles) still look good. * Velcro still works well. * Having to clean up after using these, however, has made me consider throwing these away or donating them. ORIGINAL REVIEW ---------------------- Before ordering, I read the reviews and noticed some people were complaining about a certain chemical odor... In regards to odor: 1) I ordered mine from Cavalier Wholesale. 2) Black color. 3) Completely odorless. Feedback: Was looking for mats so I could work on ground movement at home, hoping to supplement my BJJ training. Because I saw most other reviews having to do w/ girls and gymnastics, I was a little worried it may not meet my needs: I currently weigh 260lbs and was looking for something that could handle my sprawls, landing on my knees if I fell, or me being thrown by someone else. The specs seemed to be fairly similar to those I've seen at other MMA online stores (at half the price), so I ordered 2 mats. I received the mats last night. I noticed they were very solid when I was taking them out of the box. I wasn't expecting that level of firmness. As soon as I took the 1st one out of the box, I extended it and let myself drop, from a full standing position, straight down to my knees. Felt nothing but mat. I then stood up and let my body fall forward (flat as a board). Again, nothing but mat - was worried that with my weight, I may end up bottoming out and feel the concrete. Not worried anymore. The media could not be loaded. This product is very good for younger kids. It did tear after like a week of having it though as you can see in the picture. It is pretty hard but in a soft type of way which is what I was looking for. My other mat was bigger but squishy and I didn’t like that and I needed a more firm one which is what this is. It is also very comfortable for when you fall and I have it under my bar so when I do fall it doesn’t hurt at all. Also when I don’t fall and I just jump off to land it is soft on my feet instead of my feet landing on the hard wood floor. ... show more

There are different versions of these mats, make sure you get the one you want. The one I got is vinyl covered hi density foam. It accordion folds. It has good handles and seems durable. It is reasonably stable for doing exercises including standing and kneeling exercises. I have no problem doing yoga on it though it is much larger than a typical yoga mat. It does NOT have Velcro edges and does not come apart into 4 mats. It is not a soft surface to fall on like a mattress -- there are softer mats that could go on top of this one for that. Nor is it quite as rigid as a traditional wrestling mat. These are not criticisms of this product, I'm just saying you need to understand what it is your are buying. ... show more

We like the mat, it does the important things well: FIRM FOAM: The foam is quite firm, good for exercise and gymnastics (though perhaps too firm to work as a spare mattress by itself). FOLDS UP: The ability to fold it up to move it out of the way is very helpful. GOOD QUALITY: The construction quality seems good, though we just received it and time will tell. I wish we'd bought it a long time ago, we could have used it for a lot of kids activities. It does have a couple issues: 10% SMALLER THAN DESCRIBED: The mat we received is 45-1/2 inches wide and 91-1/2 inches long, and 1-7/8 inches thick. So the area it covers is about 10% smaller than is described. There's no reason the vendors can't accurately describe the product. SOME ODOR: I have a fairly sensitive nose, and there is a modest odor when you're close to the mat. You also notice a slight odor when you enter the room that it is in. Neither is a particular problem, but one would think (at this price) they could choose materials that avoid this issue. Note that there are velcro strips on a flap along one of the long edges and one of the short edges, so you can connect multiple mats together. ... show more

My daughter has been using this mat to practice her gymnastics on inside the house for months now. It works great in protecting her head when doing somersaults, which was a frequent complaint before. It works great in protecting her feet from banging the wall when doing handstands up against the wall, which was a complaint of both hers and mine, though I have to hold the mat up for her so it doesn't fall over. I suppose you could put a hook in the wall to put the handle over and it would probably stay on it's own, but we have not done that yet. The handles work well for carrying it, as well as holding it together when it's folded up, since they have velcro on them to stick together with. Our complaint would be that the material is fairly slippery. She doesn't get nearly as good of a grip, even with bare feet, as she gets on the mats at the gymnastics school, which makes it more difficult to practice things like bridge kickovers since her feet sometimes slip out from under her. Wearing socks while on it is absolutely out of the question! So far it has held up well, no rips or tears to speak of. ... show more
