Style: 32" 4K Calibrated Pantone Design Monitor...

It looks nice and works well, but there are a couple of dead pixels on the screen, and now that I've had it for about 4 months, the screen intermittently just goes blank for a couple of seconds. It happens about 3-5 times a day. When I purchased this, it was marked as a refurbished item, did not come in the original packaging, the mount was bent, and the power supply looks generic, not original. All this to say, it was cheaper to buy it this way, but I wonder if these quality issues are unique to it being marked as refurbished. It certainly was not in new condition, and is showing signs of trouble. If I could return it, I would, but if I could buy it again, I would do so only if I bought a new one instead of refurbished. I do actually like the monitor, just wishing the defects were minimized.

My original intent was to acquire a monitor where I can both playback and stream UHD (4K) content on a respectable sized desktop monitor. I did some research on 27" monitors and found for the price per specs, the BENQ was hard to beat. The specs are made clear as are various reviews from printed word to videos (youtube etc.). At present, I have an older Macbook Pro (hooked up and a higher end streamer - NVidia Shield TV that can stream 4K and also play 4K files). For those looking for handling or being HDR aware, this monitor fits the bill. However I cannot call it a real HDR monitor simply because it falls short of the HDR specs in brightness range. What it does do is handle HDR media files with ease and makes them more than presentable. For those starting out with video, you may find this either a good entry or just shy of a good entry. From a photo PoV, this is not a bad monitor at all. It has a couple of the colour spaces that are popular with some photographers and a very close match when the printer too is calibrated to match with the monitor. This monitor uses soft calibration which means information reside on the computer side and it adjusts the monitor accordingly. Higher end graphic monitors are literally hardware/firmware adjusted. I can easily recommend this monitor as a great starting point for an avid hobbyist who is considering printing images. The catch of course is a good tool to calibrate is require and those are easy enough to find. Consider Spyder 5, ColorMunki and i1 Display. The have their own tiers of quality as well. The lower right has the basic controls for the monitor and they are very easy to navigate. Add to this some PiP, a way to see how HDR is compared to without (their adjustment) and more rounds the controls off into likeable interaction when needed. The screen itself is a "thin matte" as in no serious reflections yet it doesn't seem to appear "flat and less sharp" which often can happen with more heavily matted screens. I call this a serious plus. The frame around the screen is fairly narrow which is please to the eye and only the bottom is a touch wider to of course get the BENQ name out but not loudly. What I really like is the stand which is easy enough to get the screen attached and is quite robust and sturdy. The top of the stand creates an opening so that one's hand can fit in as if it were a handle and the monitor moved about easily and safely (assuming one is careful). Though the screen can rotate 90 degrees to go from horizontal to vertical, I have no use for this and I wish that this monitor somewhat had a "click into place" or similar to note when the screen has met the vertical and horizontal position. The latter is just a want item but not really a problem at all. Gaming - let's face it, there are many many monitors out there that are for those that "feel the need for speed" and that is not this monitor. However, it does do well with certain medium to moderate requirements games so some may love the 4K facet and the colour (as there is a setting for a game like profile for this monitor which is saturated and contrasty). If your gaming needs are moderate and you do art or similar, this could do the trick. Audio - like many monitors today they either have no speakers or small mediocre speakers. This monitor has the latter. The audio is not bad but a screen of this size and beauty deserve a more serious consideration for audio to match. They will do in a pinch but don't expect bass, super clarity or pure treble sound. The monitor has a typical small jack out for headphones/speakers. Save time when connecting cables. The monitor comes with some useful cables and they are fairly well made (or rather wont break at the plug ends like some cheap versions). The location of the port/plugs on the monitor face downward and I find the easiest way to plug the cables in is to rotate the screen so that the ports are now to the side. Make sure if you desire, to run the cable through the "hole" in the vertical stand for easy cable management. Because there is USB, some are different than others in function so be sure to use the correct port based on function. I don't know if any of the above helps anyone but make sure to see all the specs, along with bells and whistles and if this is the right size monitor. If your space is shallow, 27" might be too large. If you have a work area with depth, you may want to consider a 32" monitor and BENQ also makes this in the larger size.
