  • Bright and easy to read music and guitar tab songs to get you going quickly, like in an hour!
If your an educator wanting to play a guitar, with no guitar experience, with elementary school children and sing along with them then this book is it. You could easily be a family member teaching kids, a church youth program leader, or just about anyone, no bias here towards who wants to learn these great timeless classics. This book covers the 50 most popular songs throughout American history. From "Amazing Grace" to "Yankee Doodle" they are all there. Most songs only take up a page and some two. Tab diagram is easy to read, clear and concise. Musical notation is also there if you are so inclined. This book can also be purchased for those just wanting to learn songs at home at well. In an hour one could easily learn a song or two. Remember when first learning guitar pushing down the strings is very painful, but it gets easier as time goes by. At first play every other day or even everyday, but when the pain happens stop, take a break, and let the calluses build up. Lighter, and light strings are easier and brighter to play with should you want to change your strings on acoustic. Electric guitars have really light strings, so going that route is also an option. Complete list of songs include: ABC Song This Old Man Happy Birthday She’ll Be Coming Round the Mountain This Land Is Your Land Take Me Out to the Ballgame Mary had a Little Lamb London Bridge is Falling Down Are You Sleeping Rain Rain Go Away Ring Around the Rosie Baa Baa Black Sheep If You're Happy and You Know It The Wheels on the Bus Go Trick or Treat Hot Cross Buns Humpty Dumpty Old MacDonald Row Row Row Your Boat The Itsy Bitsy Spider Yankee Doodle Amazing Grace Drunken Sailor Jingle Bells Joyful Joyful Alouette Twinkle Twinkle Little Star Hickory Dickory Dock The Farmer in the Dell Head Shoulders Knees and Toes Hush Little Baby Skip to My Lou Kum Ba Yah The Muffin Man I Come from Alabama Lavender's Blue A Tisket A Tasket Girls and Boys Scarborough Fair Bingo Tom Dooly We Wish You a Merry Christmas Polly Put the Kettle On Coming Round the Mountain Silent Night When The Saints Go Marching In Oranges and Lemons Pop Goes the Weasel Camptown Races English Country Garden Molly Malone Red River Valley One note I would like to add is the book is not binded as pictured in the product page. It is rather stapled in the center. Makes no difference to me, it all works the same. Book is well written with plenty of examples on how to learn the rhythm and what the finger positions should be in guitar TAB and musical notation. As someone who has played guitar for many years I believe this is one of the easiest easy guitar book out there. ... show more

  • Nice collection of traditional songs, easy to read music for a beginner Nice collection of traditional songs, easy to read music for a beginner
I got this partly to see what the "50 popular songs" were. I was rather hoping for beginner adaptations of contemporary hits, but what's included are mainly folk/traditional songs. This is fine, too, as it's helpful as a beginner to practice songs you know by heart (but not on guitar), so you can easily tell that you're playing the right melody and rhythm. It's certainly better than the "songs" in most grade 1 guitar books that are really just dressed-up technical drills. Book includes a section on chords and strumming patterns but not a lot of advice on which patterns to apply to the songs in the book. It includes a short section introducing major scales with a bit of encouragement to practice the scales often. The meat of the book is the songs, and I do like how these are presented. The songs are printed both on the staff and in tab form, so a beginner can choose which method they prefer. It should be noted for the staff, in one or two songs the traditional guitar clef is not used (with everything shifted up an octave), and instead the song is printed on the standard treble clef, which, if you're not looking closely, will mean the "C" in one song is on a different string/fret than in another. This might be slightly confusing to a beginner. The notes on the page are color coded, and and well spaced, which makes it easy to sight-read and get to playing a new peice successfully right away. ... show more

  • Is Learning How To Play An Instrument Easy?
The answer is YES. And the answer is NO. Why would I say that? Well, when I was in college, many years ago, sturdying to get my bachelor's degree in music education, I worked at Macy's selling radios, phonos, tape recorders and simple organs. A customer asked me that question. Told him that is IS easy. Well, as I said in the header, it is, and it isn't. It depends on a few factors. First, do you have any experience playing ANY musical instrument? Next, what instrument interests you. If you tell me, say, violin, I will have to say that it is probably not going to be easy. If the instrument is a simple tin flute or Tonette, that would probably be easier. Next, to what degree of proficiency are you aiming? There are many factors involved in the easy or complexity of learning to play ANY instrument. Perhaps you are an actual prodigy. If so, you might have a relatively easy time. But there is ONE KEY FACTOR THAT IS UNIVERSAL!!! The answer is contained in the old riddle, "Can you tell me how to get to Carnegie Hall?" The answer is: PRACTICE!!!!!! All that said, this review is about a rudimentary, introductory book aimed at getting you to the point at which you can produce music. That's the beginning. This book, for such a purpose, IS very good. It provides a basic introduction to musical terma, nomenclature and takes you trough the beginning steps of being able to product music. Why would I want a book like this> It keeps me in tune (please forgive the inintended pun!) with what is needed to take someone from ZERO musical knowledge to the actual production of real music. It is well presented, both content-wide and graphically. So, if that is your purpose, go ahead and spend a few bucks. You will probably have a good time, and there is NOTHING like producing music for family and friends. I used to have a sweatshirt that had a picture of Peanuts' dog, Snoopy dancing. On the back it said, "TO THOSE OF US WITH REAL UNDERSTANDING, MUSIC IS THE ONLY PURE ART FORM!!" Well, I won't go quite that far! But I do believe that is a true statement!! Enjoy your journey into the arts. This is a good first step. ... show more

  • Nice beginner songs
I am a fan of this company and have many books and charts by them. I think they make things fun for kids. However, in every instruction book I have found some things sort of left out, that a beginner might have to find the answer to elsewhere. This one that was minimal, fortunately. The songs have different chords, and the F chord is a common one. If you have never done barre chords, then there is a learning curve that is not covered. You will need to use the side of your index finger to hold down the whole length of where it says your first finger should be. This is hard to do for many beginners and can cause the sound to be muted or buzzing. I would suggest looking up a video online that will take you through the steps of how to do that comfortably and not just wing it. Overall though, this is an EXCELLENT beginner book with both tablature (playing melody one note at a time) and chords (strumming all/some strings). If you are willing to put in the effort to get your fretting fingering correct, you have a good assortment to learn with... it could give you a good beginner foundation in guitar. Note: the spine has one fold, which is better than the glued flat spine pictured in some of the listing. ... show more

  • Feels like an anachronism…. Feels like an anachronism….
I’ve been playing guitar since I was 15/16 years old (I’m now 40), and my almost-17 year old has asked me to teach him. He’s finally learned what an asset it can be to attract attention from potential girlfriends 🙄 Though I wish his reasons were a bit more altruistic, it doesn’t change the fact I am still not the teaching type, unfortunately, and never took lessons myself, so music theory isn’t my strong suit. So I ordered this book to maybe help him out…..yeah, nah. It was a hard pass for him. It’s not to say that the types of songs found in this book don’t have their place or their merits with people new to an instrument. However, Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star hasn’t been amazing OR popular since I was 6, and the other songs don’t get any better. Also would like to add that if you’re someone who gets offended at old-fashioned mannerisms and phrases, you may not want to purchase this book. The song “Tom Dooley” is a huge downer and not sure why it’s included. I have never heard the song in my life, along with a couple of the other ones. If you have an elementary school aged child who is learning to play, then this is could likely be a good choice, WITH a teacher. There’s absolutely no way that someone brand new to music and guitar can decipher the scales and time signatures on their own based just on what the book has printed in it. It’s a crash course in learning how to read tablature and sheet music that only makes sense if you’re already familiar with them. But, for learning how to play a melody using tablature or learning chord shapes (there’s a nifty diagram in the back), it’s not a horrible tool to use. But expect vagueness and songs about beheading. ... show more

  • It's ok
I think it would be better if they included a link to a private youtube video or online for people who buy this book. The first pages explain a brief intro for beginners, but it is mostly filled with the songs. I don't think this book alone is good for the beginner, but it is good to accompany it.
