Best workout earbuds I’ve used

I had the original Powerbeats Pro and they were some of the best earbuds I’d ever used, so I had high expectations for the Powerbeats Pro 2. They haven’t disappointed me. The biggest reason I keep coming back to Powerbeats is the ear-hook design. I’ve tried a lot of different earbuds, and sooner or later most of them start slipping or falling out, especially during exercise. These stay extremely secure. They’re probably the most secure earbuds I’ve personally used, which makes them perfect for working out. The sound quality is great, they’re very comfortable, the noise cancellation works well, and the battery life has been excellent. I use them regularly and honestly haven’t found anything I dislike about them so far. If you want a pair of earbuds you don’t have to constantly adjust or worry about falling out during a workout, I highly recommend these.

PowerBeats 2 vs PowerBeats 1 Design and Featured

As an owner of the Beats PowerBeats 1 for over 5 years, I was skeptical about purchasing these after seeing the different comments between PowerBeats 1 and the new PowerBeats 2, but I am very glad with my purchase and to start using the new features in my day to day activities. Case: The case for the Beats PowerBeats 2 is much lighter (weight wise) and the case is also slimmer compared to PowerBeats 1 case. The case can easily fit into a large pocket or zipper compartment in a purse or bag, but the case is still bigger than an Apple AirPods case. The PowerBeats 2 case is now the same color as the PowerBeats 2 themselves where the PowerBeats 1 case was black, where my PowerBeats 1 are Glacier Blue. Over-Ear Design: The over-ear design for the PowerBeats 2 is much smaller compared to the PowerBeats 1. With smaller ears, I personally feel like it fits much better compared to the PowerBeats 1 over-ear design because the old design used to sit on part of my ear and rubbed my ear making it painful. I can see why people with larger ears do not like the new over-ear design of the PowerBeats 2 because it would be too small for their ears. Inside Ear Design: The inside-ear design for the PowerBeats 2 is a bit larger for the round part and shorter for the speaker part compared to the PowerBeats 1. The PowerBeats 1 were smaller for the round part and longer for the speaker part. I can see why people are having problems not liking the new design because the new design for PowerBeats 2 basically sits on top of the ear canal, instead of being inserted further down to give it a tighter seal. The Inside Ear Design was one of the main reasons why I was skeptical of purchasing because of having small ears. I personally think they fit fine, if not better because since the design is sitting on top of the ear canal the larger round part is not rubbing on my ear sitting inside like the PowerBeat 1 design. Ear Tip Design: The Ear Tip Design for the PowerBeats 2 is a single cone tip compared to the double cone tip on the PowerBeats 1. The tips that come with the PowerBeats 2 are XS, S, M, L, XL. The M is automatically inserted on the PowerBeats 2 when they arrive. The M design fits my small ears easily. If you want more of a tighter seal or need a larger size, then you can easily switch the tips out. If you want it to feel similar to the PowerBeats 1, you can switch out the single cone tip for a double cone tip easily. Charging: Charging for the PowerBeats 2 is now with a USB-C, instead of a lighting charger on PowerBeats 1. PowerBeats 2 also does not come with a charging cable, so you need to purchase one separately or use a current USB-C charging cord you own. My PowerBeats 2 arrived 70% charged, so I was able to use them instantly. The magnets for magnetic charging also feel stronger on PowerBeats 2 than on PowerBeats 1. The magnetic charging for PowerBeats 2 is located on the top and bottom of the large round part, instead of, on the outer part like on PowerBeats 1. PowerBeats still holds a charge for a longer period of time than other earphones especially with the charging case. This is another reason why I love the PowerBeats with how long they last on one charge. Perfect for if you are on the go or use them a lot for a long period of time. Sound: The sound for the PowerBeats 2 is very similar and a bit improved from the PowerBeats 1. New features for Active Noise Cancelling and Spatial Audio, which I am happy to see and try in the near future. Depending on what you are listening to such as music, some songs have very clear details while other songs feel flat, but it could be the way the song was mixed and mastered to begin with. Connectivity: If you have Apple Products such as an iPhone connectivity is the same and instant for the PowerBeats 2 as it is for the PowerBeats 1. It still reads text messages and calls of all types still sound great. It's one of my main reasons why I love the PowerBeats because it's very easy to use with other Apple products. New Features: New features on the PowerBeats 2 includes Active Noise Cancellation, Spatial Audio (like surround sound or 3D audio effect listening), and Heart Monitor if you are active in the gym. Long Wear Period: I feel like the PowerBeats 2 and PowerBeats 1 longwear period is about the same. The PowerBeats 2 are still light where you forget you have them on, but after several hours it does start hurting your ear like the PowerBeats 1 do. This is just common with all earpieces that aren't custom mold fit to your ears. Packaging: The PowerBeats 2 has much cheaper packaging compared to other Beats products including the PowerBeats 1. The PowerBeats 2 packaging is basically a recycled cardboard box with a thin piece of paper holding it together. As soon as you take the paper around the box off, the package instantly opens and the PowerBeats could easily fall out if not unpackaging on a soft surface. Definitely thinner and less packaging than PowerBeats 1 as well. Price: I wouldn't have paid the $300 price when they first came out, but since they have come down in price, it was time to purchase. I was able to purchase these during Prime Days for $175. Overall: I really am enjoying the PowerBeats 2 compared to the PowerBeats 1. I feel like the new design will work better for me. I’m also excited to try all the new features on PowerBeats 2 while also having the same things I love about the PowerBeats 1 such as long hold charge, easy compatibility to other Apple Products, and how it reads my message to me. It’s perfect for me who is always on the go, listening to music, watching videos on my phone, doing video meetings and chatting on the phone. To purchase or not: The best way to know the PowerBeats 2 are for you is by purchasing them and testing them out for yourself. The worst that can happen is it doesn’t work for you for whatever reason and you can easily return them back for a refund.

I recommend doing the custom audio thing a couple times until the audio sounds right. Otherwise, it’ll sound a little flat. Totally optional though. Plays audio clearly. Microphone is okay. Sleek matte black. A more modern look than the 1st version (I call that v1). I love the ear hooks. It’s actually the reason why I wanted these over the usual airpods. Since they always pass the hair spinning / head tossin’ test. The ear hooks are not as adjustable but the ear cushions are. I ended up using my old powerbeats pro v1 cushions. The tapered shape ones. It works perfectly! Compatible with my iPhone. 👍🏼👌🏼 If you want audiophile quality, I would recommend something else.

Great Fit, but Sound and Noise Cancellation Are Disappointing

A little background may help put my experience with the Powerbeats Pro 2 into perspective. My primary earbuds are the Apple AirPods Pro 2. Initially, I had a terrible time getting a secure fit with them, but aftermarket memory foam tips made a dramatic improvement. They now stay secure enough for workouts, although the foam tips unfortunately reduce some of their noise-cancelling effectiveness. Because my gym is quite noisy and often plays loud music, my preferred workout earbuds had been the original Bose QuietComfort Earbuds. They weren't particularly attractive, but their wingtip design gave me a superb, secure fit, the sound was good, and the noise cancellation was the best I've experienced with any earbuds. Unfortunately, the right earbud recently died. I first tried replacing them with the latest Bose QuietComfort Ultra Earbuds (2nd Gen), but Bose has changed the old wingtip design to a stability-band system. For me, the fit wasn't nearly as secure and the earbuds could rotate too easily, so I returned them. That led me to the Beats Powerbeats Pro 2. Unfortunately, my experience with them was brief and disappointing. I'll start with the positive: the fit is excellent. The over-the-ear hooks keep the earbuds firmly locked in place, and I found them comfortable to wear. For someone who has difficulty keeping earbuds secure during exercise, I can certainly understand the appeal. Unfortunately, that's about where the positives ended for me. The sound quality was a considerable step down from my AirPods Pro 2. I found the Powerbeats noticeably weaker and somewhat "tinny" sounding by comparison. More importantly for my particular use, the active noise cancellation was fairly weak. Even my AirPods Pro 2 with memory foam tips rivaled the Beats noise cancellation, with the stock tips, the air pods 2 noise reduction is much better. Neither could equal that of my Bose. Had the Powerbeats Pro 2 offered excellent noise cancellation, I might have been willing to forgive the weaker sound quality in exchange for their exceptionally secure fit. But with both sound quality and noise cancellation falling short of the AirPods Pro 2, I couldn't justify keeping them. The Powerbeats Pro 2 have therefore gone back, and for now I'm returning to my AirPods Pro 2 with memory foam tips. Bottom line: If keeping earbuds securely in place is your highest priority, the Powerbeats Pro 2 certainly accomplish that. I can see them working very well for people who struggle with earbuds falling out during exercise. But if sound quality and strong noise cancellation are equally important to you, I would look elsewhere—particularly given the $249 price tag.

Good Beats quality, but not perfect for me

This is my second set of Beats Powerbeats Pro headphones, I also own the generation 1 version. I wanted another set for working out and when these came on sale during the last Prime Days, I decided to buy. Overall I am very pleased with the headphones. I had high expectations since my experience with the generation 1 version was solid. Overall I am giving these 4 stars as they are not absolutely perfect for me, however, I am very pleased with them and consider them to be a good purchase. The one thing that jumped out at me as an improvement with this 2nd generation is the charging case and specifically how the headphones fit securely into the charger. I have had a few issues with the 1st generation version where if the headphones were not placed specifically right in the charging case, they would not charge. For me, this resulted in a few instances where one headphone had a good charge while the other was nearly dead. With this 2nd generation, I noticed immediately that the headphones seem to have a stronger magnet which helps them seat securely in the charging case and overall the fit is very definitive when you put them in. There is no worry about the headphone not being fully seated. This is a small but great improvement in my opinion. Two things that I don't absolutely love about these 2nd generation headphones both deal with the fit. The over-ear loop on this 2nd generation seems to be a little more 'flat' where the 1st generation is a little more rounded. For me, the second generation just does not feel quite as comfortable because of the shape of the loop. The feeling is not uncomfortable, more that I just notice it more than I do with the previous generation. The second fit issue is that the angle of the ear piece just seems to be a little bit off for my specific anatomy. The fit just does not rest in my ear canal quite right. The fit is not "bad", but it also just does not feel perfect either. I do need to experiment with the different size ear pieces a bit to see if I can help with this. I use these connected to a Windows PC connected via Bluetooth in my workout room. The connection process was very easy and the headphones have never failed to reconnect immediately when I open the case and put them on. I generally do not wear the headphones for longer than 60-90 minutes at a time, thus battery longevity is not really an issue for me. I just remember to plug the recharging case in once every few weeks and I am more than good. Overall these are great headphones for me. I wear them almost exclusively for working out and I generally and not disappointed. The small issues that I have with the fit are not game changers and are things that I will very likely get used to over time. I got these on a good sale during Prime Days and consider the purchase to be a great value.

Perfect for Marathon Training

I’ve run four marathons and practically every training workout in these, and they are absolutely fantastic. They pair seamlessly with Apple products, just like AirPods. I really appreciate the dedicated, simple volume control buttons - something a lot of modern earphones are missing. The bass is definitely on the heavier side, which is perfect for giving you that extra energy boost during a hard workout. If you take care of them, they’ll last. I lightly wipe mine down with a damp cloth after every single run (I run 6 to 7 days a week), and I haven't had a single issue. These are easily premium workout earphones. My only minor complaint is the eartip seal. I occasionally have to readjust them during a run to maintain effective noise cancellation, though this seems to be an issue with just one ear and is likely due to my own ear shape. Even when they slip slightly, the ear hooks keep them securely in place so there's no worry of them falling off.

I was majorly on the fence given the kind of 50/50 reviews from around the net. I love my Beats Studio Pros, so I figured these would be built with the same standards - but they blew my expectations away. Fit for working out: 10/10 I was annoyed by the buttons on both ear buds at first, trying to get used to them was a hassle. And then boom, right in the app there’s settings for every switch. Turn them on/off custom modes for everything. ANC is insane. Way better than my previous Bose buds and far exceeding the ANC on my Studio cans. At the gym yesterday a guy asked me to use some 45 plates off my rack, I couldn’t hear a word he said even with my music muted. 10/10 Sound quality is a 9. Low end sounds great but the highs can get a bit muddy depending on what you’re listening to. Also, earbuds suck for listening to music so I take that into account. Get some real headphones. Battery life is average to below average, that’s my only real complaint. I’d say you use about 10% of the battery every hour (with the ANC) on. Case is durable and the buds themselves seem to be well constructed. Volume control is a snitch. You can program the buttons from the app to do whatever you want. Connectivity with an iPhone is fast and seamless. They’re ready to go as soon as you open the case for the first time. Far superior to Bose in every way.

Disappointing sound quality and fit issues for a product that should be better

Unfortunately, I can echo a lot of the negative reviews already on this product. I'll just be including some of the things I've noticed listening to them over the past few days by itself and then compared to the Airpods Pro 2. The music I listened too was pretty varied, but most of it was Pop and R&B with some instrumental/classical dropped in. 1. Sound quality: Overall, it is pretty comparable to the APP2, however, I did notice a reduced soundstage/ambience with music that had more instruments in it. I could hear guitars playing behind me on the APP2 from a greater distance than the PBP2, where they instead felt hollow up next to my ear. The bass was really full and booming on some songs, but only when I wasn't struggling with fit issues and that deserves it's own section below. Keep in mind, that I had to also upsize the default medium eartips that I got to get the results here, so it was worse than written before that. The treble and vocals on songs was the biggest disappointment for me, as the higher notes were shrill and staticky, especially as you crank up the volume. I didn't feel good pushing the volume level past 60% on the PBP2 because of that. Noise cancelling is OK, but definitely worse than the APP2. I could still hear some light conversation audio from my TV in the background. For a pair of earbuds that has the same chip as the APP2 in it, along with over a year of time since the release of the APP2 to work on improvements and such, this was a disappointment. 2. Fit: I never had the older version of this, but I hope it wasn't as difficult to get it working as the newer pair here. First, the default medium eartips did not fit well and would not pass the Fit Test within my iPhone's settings page. I had to go up to XL on one and L for the other to finally pass. I do want to add that there are 5 different sizes in the box from XS to XL, so it'll be different for everyone. Please take ample amounts of time to make sure the fit is completely dialed in! On to the hooks, which was one of the main selling points for me, I thought they did a really good job at keeping them secure. They didn't cause my ears to become super sore after wearing them for over an hour and that's also with me wearing glasses with them too. I do want to point out that with glasses, I had to adjust the PBP2 from time to time and that a movement here and there did disrupt the delicate seal I had with these. For a product where the seal is of utmost priority for both physical activity and for sound quality, I ended up starting to distrust these towards the end of my time with them. 3. Design: These earbuds look great and the case they come in charge them reliably with a 'snap' sound from the magnets. Compared to what I have read with charging becoming the main failing point here on the old version, this seems like a major error being corrected. The 'Sand' color that I got also looked really nice and I honestly had a hard choice deciding on this one vs the purple or the orange. The volume rockers on both earbuds reliably clicked and I didn't have any trouble adjusting the volume. However, I did not like the area where the 'b' symbol was. This area can be pushed down and primarily controls the Next/Previous song functions via tapping and switching between Transparency/ANC when holding it down. I could not stop hitting this area when putting these on until I learned how to grab the earbuds from a different spot and put them on and even now, I still have to double-check what listening mode I'm on, since I keep hitting this from time to time. My only other minor nitpick here is that the ear hook could have been slightly longer to make adjusting it and sliding it over my ear a bit easier, but again, I was also fighting against my glasses arm as well. 4. Heart rate monitoring: This was a pretty big sell for the new version of these earbuds and it doesn't even work that well when you can get it to work. It's not out-of-the-box easy like the Apple Watch where you can just put that on your wrist and go out, rather, this requires you to download specific apps (ex. Strava, Nike Run, etc.) to even get a number reported. There just shouldn't be this level of friction for a product like this under Apple/Beats. I really expected more from the newer iteration of this product. While it feels secure for long periods of time, the sound quality is lacking for me and the fit issues I have with it cause too many things I need to bother with to outweigh the positives. I think this product should have at least aimed to match its predecessor and not be lacking behind it in some key areas if it came out more than a year after the APP2. I don't think this is worth $250 as it is right now, so maybe with some more updates down the line to tuning the sound and a cheaper price I will revisit these. For now though, I will be returning to the Airpods Pro 2 that I have and see if I can add hooks to those to make those more secure. Note: How do you also have the same chip as the Airpods Pro 2 and not have the same functions? The PBP2 are missing Conversation Awareness and Adaptive Audio and also can't be used as a hearing aid (recently released). Not sure if it bodes well that both the hardware and software are behind something that already released...
