We needed a muzzle for our 2 Male Great Danes that are 2 year old brothers and are nervous around new people and new situations since they are rescues that were not socialized properly and were abused. We wanted to ensure that when going to the Vet for a check up that no one would get bit. We had tried another muzzle the vet let us borrow that had a belt buckle like closure but that took too long to close and our one dog would go nuts and we could never get it on him. So I knew I was looking for something that had a one click closure option. I read through a lot of reviews and once I came upon this product I saw how many great reviews it got, so we gave it a try and have been very happy with it for both dogs. The one click closure works quickly and solved the problem we had before. This product comes with an extra security strap that runs from the nose to the head to ensure the dog can not pull the muzzle off with their paws or by rubbing it on the ground. I love this extra sense of security. It also has a loop on the bottom where the collar could run through it to ensure the dog could not pull it off that way either, but we have not had a need to use that option. I love how the dog has plenty of openings to breathe easily while wearing it and how they can easily be fed treats through it and could drink if needed with it on. Very well made design all around and a quality product. Our Great Danes are both Males and one weighs 133 and the other weighs 139. We bought Size 6 for both of them and it fits both of them great and they still have plenty of room between the end of muzzle and their nose. We did lots of treat training for 2 weeks with the muzzles before attempting to actually have them wear them. Meaning the first day we just let them sniff the muzzles and then they got a treat. Then for 1 week we would hold a treat at the end of the muzzle and the only way the dog could get the treat was to put their nose in the muzzle and get it. Then the next week we would still hold the treat at the end of the muzzle, but the difference was that we would not immediately release the treat like before. We would purposely hold the treat tighter so that the dog had to work harder to get the treat and that way they would be in the muzzle for about 3-5 seconds, just to get them used to the feeling more. Then at the 2 week mark, while still giving them a treat through it, we closed it. At first they both tried to paw and rub to get it off but we immediately said lets go for a walk and they were so distracted and excited about that that they barely messed with them after that. Then when we went on a walk a few days later they had no issues with putting them on and they only tried to mess with them once and then stopped after that while on walk. Would highly recommend this product.

So at first I thought about returning this muzzle for my dog because he could easily remove it, and it wasn’t fitting his muzzle in the right position. And I realized that the fit had to do with the strap that went between his eyes in the front . I removed that strap and it fits him perfectly, and he can’t remove it. Now it works as it was intended and it fits his muzzle better, he can’t remove it at all and he can still pant and drink his water. Awesome muzzle.

After 3 1/2 years of getting along beautifully, my two girls, a Siberian Husky and a GSD/Boxer mix, decided it was time to renegotiate the role of Alpha dog. They had never fought before and when they went at each other with no warning (well, I'm sure there were signs that I, as a stupid human missed) I was absolutely terrified. There is no doubt in my mind that they were prepared to fight to the death. Both dogs had to be sewn up and my hand ended up in someone's mouth when I tried to separate them and was pretty severely injured. I was in tears for two days, wondering how I was going to make it work long-term with three dogs, two of whom could have absolutely no contact with each other. They were still total lovebugs and as sweet as ever with me and with my other dog. But they wanted to kill each other. After doing some research and contacting a behaviorist, the idea of muzzles came up. I hadn't thought of muzzles, since I guess I had bought into the idea that they were for "bad" dogs. That's not the case. Muzzles can be an incredible tool. They provide a safe, fail-proof environment and allow us to work on the real issues. They let us be a happy family again. I bought the Baskerville muzzles, as they seemed like the best choice for active dogs since the dogs can pant, drink, take treats and the ventilation is excellent. It honestly only took about 10 minutes each to get the girls comfortable with letting me put them on. As recommended, I held the muzzle cupped in my hand with plenty of choice treats at the bottom. Each dog put their face in on their own to retrieve the treats. Once the muzzle was seen as a treat dispenser, it was no problem to get it buckled around the dog's head. It is a bit of a pain to find the holes in the strap, but when I found the best fit for each dog, I marked that hole with a dab of paint so I could locate it quickly. I used the over the head straps at first, but they were always flopping in the dogs' eyes. I took them off and neither dog has ever pulled their muzzle off. Truthfully, they're so used to them that they don't try to pull them off. These muzzles have just become a part of life and neither of my girls has any problem wearing one. When they see the muzzles, they sit nicely and are more than happy to put their face in as I hold the muzzle out. They seem to know it means family time. When wearing their muzzles, they get along great and play together without any aggression. They're very active, athletic dogs and wearing these particular muzzles has allowed them to remain so. Neither their vision nor their breathing is hindered in the least. They both realized right away that they could drink with no difficulty. They even snuggle together for naps, just like they used to. I think it puts them on equal footing, and since they know they can't fight, they don't even bother. I know it's the muzzles that make the difference because when they're not wearing them, hackles are raised and they still snarl at each other through a gate. I don't ever leave the dogs unattended with the muzzles on. I have this great fear of someone getting caught on something or somehow getting them off and fighting. During those times, they're in separate rooms. I also take the muzzles off and put up a baby gate every few hours and at meal times, just to give them a break. However, given the choice, my 3 dogs want to be together, so they do wear their muzzles for many hours at a time. The one problem we had was with rubbing on the tops of the dogs' snouts. Like I said, my dogs do wear these a lot, but the rubbing was enough to cause discomfort and rub fur off. I added some neoprene padding and that took care of the issue, but I'd like to see more padding in the design. I'm so happy that someone recommended muzzles and this brand specifically. I was so afraid of the logistics of keeping my dogs separated while still providing plenty of love and attention and exercise to each of them. I was scared of what would happen if I made a mistake and forgot to close a door. How would we go hiking? How would we take road trips? With the Baskerville Ultra Muzzles, I can have my loves together and we can do all of the things we've always done. These have simply become part of our daily routine and everyone is safe and happy and loved. I hope we can work through the aggression to the point that we won't need the muzzles. But, if not I know we'll be okay and I can't explain how much that means.

My one-year-old dog, a black lab/greyhound mix, eats rocks. Lots of rocks. And after an expensive surgery to alleviate the latest mineral meal, we knew it was time to try something different, before she killed herself or our bank account. We purchased this muzzle, along with a plastic "Basket Cage Dog Muzzle", hoping one of the two might work. The generic one was a bust--the strap mechanism was awful, simply sliding off, and construction was cheap. We dumped it within a day. This, on the other hand, has much more possibility. The rubber is flexible yet tough, much more reliable than the first one. And it feels like it would be more comfortable (although, of course, she hates it--who wouldn't, except perhaps Hannibal Lector?). Now, on the downside, she's already broken on of the ribs/spokes/bars of the cage, not in a way that helps her eat rocks, but we've only had it for three weeks, so I'll admit I'm concerned about its longevity. The straps, too, are rugged, but they also present the biggest issue. It's a belt-like design, with a tongue that slips through holes. And the holes are hidden in a strange fold-like construction of the strap. So every time you're starting out from ground zero, with different tightness, sliding the strap back and forth, hoping to catch a hole on the tongue. Which doesn't sound like a big deal, until you remember ... it's a dog. And dogs aren't that patient, particularly when they want to go outside. My children get so frustrated with the issue they often "forget" to put the muzzle on, and my wife complains about it as well. I keep telling them, "with use, I'm sure the holes will open up," but so far, they really haven't. An alternative construction, with one of those snapping clasps on the same rugged strap, would make all the difference in the world. There is an additional strap, which runs over the dog's head between the eyes and attaches to the main strap. A good idea for stability and snugness, but the design of the clasp doesn't actually fit well on the main strap itself, and it's constantly coming off, leaving that strap to swing and bap our dog in the face. Now, the final element--besides rocks, she also eats poop. Yes, I know. Ech. And since she's worn the muzzle ... we've still witnessed her eat poop, through the holes. The holes in this muzzle are much larger than those in the cheap "basket" one referenced above, and they allow entry of much more than water. So, is she still eating rocks? We haven't seen her do it yet, poop's a bit more malleable, but I'm not guaranteed she hasn't. So I give it a three, probably would choose three and a half if available, based on our limited experiences, but even with the promotion of this muzzle as a breakthrough device, I think there's great room for improvement in this particular product area.

I'm writing this review because I've recently tried out a couple basket muzzles for our Saint that has recently shown some aggressiveness. Muzzles, in general, have a mixed bag of fans/critics. However, when you have a 150 pound dog you really don't want to bite anyone (and shows somewhat of a desire) it's a no brainer. I tried one of the metal basket muzzles first. It was one of the more expensive ones on Amazon so I assumed it was "better". Our pooch really wouldn't warm up to it. Not to mention it just looked cumbersome and awkward. I'm sure it was effective..imagine putting a steel bird-cage around a dog's muzzle..no way they are going to bite. But, let's just say, it would take some getting use to for both the animal and the human. OK back to the focus on the Baskerville. Even though I measured snout length/diameter carefully I decided to purchase both the 5 and 6. Because his measurements were in between. Glad I did. I tried the 6 on him first and it was near perfect. The 5 I couldn't even get around his face. So, there is a tremendous difference between the sizes imo. Amazon was kind enough to accept the size 5 back. We fed him treats through the unattached muzzle a few times before we actually strapped it around his head. This is a standard for muzzle-training from what my "internet sources" have suggeted.. He had no problems wearing it and soon as I strapped it on him. It went on easily. I gave him some jerky treats through the bottom slot. No problem for him to eat them. We kept it on for about 2 minutes the first time. Second time was 5 minutes. He did try to scrape it off once, but didn't really "appear" to be stressed by it in anyway. And I can say that the scraping with his big bear-like paws didn't even stretch the leather and the muzzle held firmly in place. I'm fairly confident he'll adapt to the point I can take him on long hikes in the woods, which he loves, with the muzzle on. Just going to build up gradually. I'm leading in with perfect scores because of the initial ease to acclimate. Thought it was going to be much more difficult. Functionally I've not really had the opportunity to "run it through the rigors". Which, I hope I don't have to. Our boy obeys pretty good, but the muzzle is just that worst case scenario failsafe. Anyway, this is my initial assessment of the Baskerville Ultra Muzzle.

Great muzzle! One thing that isn't working for me and my two dogs is that the chin strap is longer than it should be, so the muzzle is kinda pushed away from the neck and thus the top part moves too close to the eyes. I had to fix it by hand - it doesn't look pretty but it works so much better. See the pictures - it is more clear there. The two muzzles on the pic are same size 4, but only one has been adjusted by me. Also, I had to order a size up for my dog (I got size 3, but it was smaller than I wanted it to be). Size 4 fits her much better - more space for her to open her mouth and pant.

The size recommendations are way off. The circumference standards aren't close to my dog's and completely unhelpful. The eye-to-nose measurement is informative, but still not determinative. It would have led me to purchase a model larger than appropriate. My dog, a Boxer mix, is supposedly a size 5, but I read enough reviews to order a 4 and it fits perfectly --neither too constricting nor too loose. With that minor reservation, this is an incredibly well-designed product. The reviewer who says he regarded it as only an interim solution while awaiting a much more expensive rigid steel basket is nuts. The virtue of this product is that it secures the dog's muzzle without impairing the dog's vision, movement, and comfort as a metal muzzle would. The rubber material is not heavy enough to be annoying while still providing the desired stability. My dog adapted to it immediately. He now voluntarily puts his head into it. A few times he has rubbed his head against grass, but I interpreted that to be more an effort to relieve an itch than to dislodge the muzzle. He has never used his leg, for example, to try to remove it as dogs often do with medical cones. I also don't get the gripes about closing and locking the ends of the muzzle. That feature is similar to that found on my dog's collar. The key is to lift the female end off the male end rather than trying to force the male end out of the female end. As long as you apply the two pressure levers at the same time to the same degree, the female end lifts off easily. Nor do you need a second collar to secure the muzzle; its securing loop easily slips on and off the dog's existing collar. I was self-conscious about resorting to a muzzle because I thought it indicated some inadequacy in my own ability to train my dog or my dog's character. I was wrong about that. In many cases, we don't, and cannot, know what triggers each individual dog to express his anxiety by sometimes biting. All we can do is contain that instinctive reaction he can't control himself. I am so grateful to have a device as carefully conceived as this one to do so.

I have an Anatolian Shepard which has a bit of an over protection slant to him (which is common for that breed). Taking him to the dog park was always a bit of challenge as he would put the hurt on any dog that would come within 5 or so feet of me. We tried a number of muzzles but this is by FAR the best one we have owned. The muzzle is made from a very durable plastic/rubber that is malleable (you can squish it in your hands). The dog can eat and drink with is on - and even pick up a ball or frisbee with a bit of determination...yet it keeps him out of trouble. No one wants to be "that guy with the mean dog at the dog park". This muzzle has helped a TON with socialization and he wears it every time he goes in public. Because he now associates the muzzle with "going out" he loves it and will sit patiently while I put it on him. Pros: Made from great material - flexible and dog can eat and drink with no problems. In warmer environments (or summer time anywhere) this type of muzzle is a must as the dog can open his mouth and pant (not so with the "sleeve type") Easy to put on if you have a 2nd dedicated collar for this muzzle (see the con's list) Cons: To properly attach, there is a strap/loop on the bottom part of the muzzle - The collar MUST go through the loop..so either you have to take off your dogs collar and slide it though the loop EVERY TIME you put this on..or just buy a 2nd collar dedicated for muzzle. NOTE: this design, while sturdy is kind of a pain until you just resign yourself to buy a 2nd collar.. this could be fixed in the manufacturing process by adding velcro or a snap instead of a permanent loop... also if you have a 2nd collar - don't forget to get a 2nd dog registration tag (or transfer the tag EVERY TIME). While the muzzle is built great and made from the perfect material... my dog started getting a "hot spot" on the bridge of his nose, right where the muzzle rests on it. This was an easy fix. I took an old koozie (beer cooler things) and cut a piece about 4 inches long by about 1 inch. I super glued it along the inside of the plastic. Now the neoprene from the koozie rests on his nose and the hotspot is gone.. this design would make this awesome muzzle even awesomer(?) and shouldn't add much to the price (my koozie was about $1.00 and I could have "fixed" about 10 of these muzzles with a single koozie)... Giving it a STRONG 4 out of 5 - only because of the 2 "design" issues - both are easy fixes.. I HIGHLY recommend this muzzle. Oh and one last thing: To ANY dog owner who is on the fence about getting a muzzle. GET THE MUZZLE Maybe your dog might, every once in a while, get in a scrap at the dog park... just do it. Get the muzzle. Your dog will come to love it and you don't have to worry about any problems. And please don't be the person who thinks "My dog needs to defend itself, I'm not getting a muzzle"... no..just no.. if your dog gets attacked, I promise you it can still fight back - at least long enough for you to break it up..if you are more than 50 yards away from your dog at the park - you are doing something wrong. Don't be "that guy" whos dog ruins everyone else's fun at the park. Get the muzzle.. for less than $20 it's the cheapest insurance you can get.
