Description

Written with the do-it-yourselfer in mind, Barns, Sheds & Outbuildings gives readers the information they need to plan, build, and finish a utility building. This revised and expanded edition presents a variety of buildings, from the simplest garden shed to a huge gambrel dairy barn to a backyard artist's studio. Part One begins with design and planning information to help potential builders locate their building, decide on its design, and decode architectural plans and building codes. Individual chapters detail the basics: building foundations, from simple shed foundations to poured concrete slabs; framing walls and roofs, including long sections on pole buildings and old- fashioned timber-framing techniques; and closing in the framing, including all types of roofing and siding as well as door and window installation. Other chapters cover the basic wiring and plumbing needs of barns, as well as options for interior and exterior finish work. Part Two presents 12 design concepts, with photographs and detail views, of various buildings that readers can build. Read more

  • Top to bottom, inside and out coverage.
This book comprehensively covers all aspects of building a barn, shed or outbuilding yourself; it would also help someone who was planning on having one built for them. It covers everything from top to bottom and inside and out: siting, foundation, framing, roofing, weatherproofing, finishing, electrical and plumbing. It is easy to read and the illustrations are instructive, not merely decoration. Since many of the techniques are used in homebuilding, the book would be of interest to home owners as well. ... show more

  • a lot of good ideas for building small buildings
a lot of good ideas for building small buildings. I am planning to build a shed or two and eventually a cabin in a remote part of the country.

  • Great book
You can literally build a barn from ground up after reading this book. It is as in-depth as you can get on the topic, with plenty of pictures to make the subject make sense. Even if you're just doing a portion of the work yourself, this book will give you a better understanding of what goes into the building process. ... show more

  • fantastic book
I really really liked this book and have enjoyed learning about wood. It has a lot of good information that I have not seen before.

  • Barns
Nicley done, introductory how-to book for those wanting to undertake a barn project themselves. It does not give adequate guidance for sizing your project to meet varying needs. Therefore, you really have to have done your own field investigations to understand what size(s) different functions require, what heights and depths make sense for different equipment, animals, sports uses, etc. Useful, but not as comprehensive in the planning process as it could have been. ... show more

  • Exactly what I was looking for
This book provides a thorough review of the building techniques that go into constructing a variety of outbuildings, with clear illustrations and very good detail. Following presentation of the techniques, it provides plans for a number of buildings. As a homeowner with intermediate skills, I found this book extremely useful, and I'm looking forward to putting my new skills to work on my new shed. ... show more
