  • Great for off roading
Color: Black
A fantastic handheld to keep in the Jeep while out with our trail group. Works well and is nice to have when spotting another driver.

  • Love it But!
Color: Yellow
I purchased this radio to replace my UV5r which was an awesome radio, however it stopped transmitting. I love the new upgrade unit I received but dropped it somehow and it cracked the led screen inside. So can’t hardly see what channel I’m on, I did notice one difference and that’s the UV5r has a raised area around the led screen and this one does not which is probably why it cracked so easily, Anyway I’ll use until I can’t then guess I’ll be searching for another unit. ... show more

  • 2 steps forward, 1 step back
Color: Yellow
I believe this is the internals of the UV-5RXP. The only distinctions is the "tri-power" setting and the higher wattage. Use chirp with any of the standard Baofeng programing cables and choose UV-5RXP. This radio is factory unlocked, meaning it is able to transmit on GMRS and MURS bands. The shell looks cheaper than the UV-5R but that might be due to the color. Bright colors do make it look like a kid's toy. The battery is USB-A chargeable. The plug on the battery has sharp corners and is in an awkward place. Still, no power brick needed. That's nice a plus but it's undone by the terrible drop in charger that it comes with. It does not mate will with the radio. It's not drop in, more like slowly and carefully place-in. The antenna is, of course, terrible. Get a replacement. The SMA connector sits lower than the UV-5R and the molding on the light blocks antennas with large bases like the folding antenna. Works with most of them though like the 771 clones and the signal stick. SMA female dual-bands are easy to find. Overall, a slight upgrade with some steps-back. ... show more

  • replacement unit works great; Chirp programming trick
Color: Black
When my first unit stopped turning on after only a couple minutes, I emailed Baofeng customer support and they quickly responded, agreeing I should return it to Amazon. The replacement unit works great. I love that it can recharged from 5V USB. Note that it's slightly longer than other UV-5 and UV-8, so can't always pack into the same container. To program it with Chirp, I had to treat it as a Radioddity UV-5RX3, per some instructions found on YouTube. Original review: I own a dozen Baofeng HTs. I program them with Chirp, I keep one charged in my car using the cigarette lighter adapter, and I have an extended battery for another. I was excited to try the UV-S9+ with its direct USB charging feature. It arrived from Amazon with a nearly full battery. I turned it on and it seemed fine ("channel mode!"), so I plugged it into Chirp to make a backup of its settings before uploading my config. But it powered off just a few seconds after I tried to start the download, and afterwards powered back on briefly only once or twice. I connect it to the charging cradle and the charging light glows bright red for hours, but never gets to green. All my other Baofengs can be powered on as soon as they are placed in the cradle, but this UV-S9+ has been totally unresponsive after the above experience. I guess I'll ask Amazon to replace it. ... show more

  • It does what I need it to do...
Color: Red
This radio is like most Baofeng radio. Works good, the distance with the stock antenna is what I was expecting from what I know about the radio and from reviews I have read. Was about to connect to a repeater about four miles from where I was at on the farm. So there mostly hills between me and the repeater. I can listen to some local fire/police/ems, that are still on analog. I know a person on the Volunteer Fire Department and he uses a UV-5R. He able to hear them several miles from the station using repeaters. This radio is basically an upgrade from a UV-5R radio. I use chirp to program, using Baofeng UV-5R settings. And depends on the port, I used the larger number in the list. And if that didn't work just chose the other one. As for the battery life not sure of the life. ... show more

  • UV5R with some nice features and some dumb ones
Color: Yellow
If you used a UV5R before, this is basically the same radio, with some differences. It is advertised as 8 watts out but the best reading I've been able to obtain is 5.3 watts out on high power. Same as a UV5R. The differences are: 1. There is a USB charging cable with a 3.5mm plug on one end that will plug in directly into the battery and charge it. This is the main reason I bought the radio, so I could have a dozen of them without all the cradles. I've not seen a gang charger that's compatible yet. 2. The drop in charger design is far from drop in. It is very difficult to align the radio to put in the charger. This is dumb, but since I intended on using USB to charge, I didn't return the radio over this feature. I think many people would hate it enough to reteurn it. 3. The belt clip seems to be slightly higher quality than a typical UV5R. Not by much, but by a little. Chirp programming software works with the UV5R setting. The menus are basically identical to the UV5R. I needed a throw away radio that was easy to charge with USB. This fit the bill. But if you want to use the drop in charger mainly, think twice., ... show more
