So cheap yet works so well
The BAOFENG UV-5R 8W Ham Radio is a versatile and budget-friendly option for amateur radio enthusiasts and those needing reliable communication in various situations. With its 8-watt power output, this model offers a significant boost in transmission range compared to the standard 5-watt version, making it a great choice for both urban and rural environments. The dual-band capability (VHF/UHF) allows you to access a wide range of frequencies, enhancing its utility for different communication needs. One of the standout features of the UV-5R 8W is its compact and lightweight design, making it highly portable without sacrificing functionality. The device also includes features like dual watch and dual reception, enabling you to monitor two channels simultaneously, which is particularly useful in emergency or event management scenarios. The radio is user-friendly, though it might require a bit of a learning curve for beginners, particularly when programming frequencies. Thankfully, there are plenty of resources and community support available online to help users get the most out of the device. Battery life is decent, and the radio includes a range of accessories like a belt clip, antenna, and earpiece. For the price, the BAOFENG UV-5R 8W offers impressive value, making it a popular choice among both new and experienced ham radio users. ... show more

He's happy
My husband brought these for when he goes hunting and he loves them. He said it has a very good long range where he is able to communicate with everyone so that when he's in the woods he can hear where everyone is and what's going on when he's not close to the truck. So now we get to go on long hikes, and we can leave one at home and keep in touch so that we know we have someone listening for us in case we need help. He said he has recommended this to everyone he hunts with. ... show more

good starter ham radios
cheap price, but decent as starter ham radio. you can listen without a license, but get your license if you want to transmit. two longer antennas are inside the box under the packaging, but don't seem to be much better than standard rubber ducky. functioning as expected. chargers work too. thanks.

Third set I've purchased
Great product easy to use takes some time but well worth the investment. Have sets for family and friends around the country. Great piece of mind if cell service goes down. Recommend the longer whip antenna.

Great for emergencies
I’m thrilled to give the BAOFENG UV-5R Ham Radio a solid five-star rating for the sheer joy it brings to communication enthusiasts. This handheld radio is not just a walkie-talkie; it’s a versatile device that opens up a world of connectivity. The 8W high power and dual-band functionality allow one to engage with various channels, from local police and EMS to astronauts in space, GMRS users, FRS users, and fellow HAM operators. It’s like having an all-in-one communication hub right in the palm of my hand. However, I must emphasize that achieving such diverse communication capabilities requires special written permission from the FCC (they won’t give it to you), multiple licenses, and the unique status of being a police officer, a paramedic, and a ham operator. This is the only legal way to utilize the full spectrum of this device for transmitting purposes. In summary, the BAOFENG UV-5R Ham Radios provide an exceptional radio experience for those who understand and adhere to the necessary legalities and permissions. Five stars for the fun, versatility, and connectivity it brings to radio enthusiasts. Remember, responsible and legal usage is key! ... show more

Great radio.
Although it has all the features you need for repeaters, I already have a handheld for that. I use this radio for simplex (146.52) while I’m on the road. It works well going cross country.
