I got a friend to program it because I’m not tech savvy. Once programmed it has been easy to use with good battery life. It does take a long time to charge the 8w battery with the supplier cradle however. Best to have a few batteries to rotate.

These are great programmable radios to do anything from frs to shortwave frequencies. This package comes with the extended life batteries which are great if you need to get through the weekend without a charge. The controls are a bit confusing at the start but once you learn to do what you need its easy. You will want to get snd app called Chirp to program the radios for the frequencies you need. Bought these because they claim 8 watts of transmitting power. Most FRS or GMRS portable radios transmit with 1 watt. I don’t have a watt meter but, in practice, these “8 watt” radios provide no additional range. This is a great Ham radios on a budget, and I try to always buy from Abbree because I always get the best deal and never get a counterfeit product.

    • Good radios, questionable tac antennas

Both radios came in a timely manner and worked great. They only come with the large battery and not the standard one so be aware. With the standard antenna on uhf I was able to get about 900 meters (~0.5 mile) in an urban area before interference. The tac antennas seem to work better than the standard ones on vhf but since I am not liscenced I didn't do too much testing. If you are considering buying these, I would strongly suggest buying a programming cable as well. These can be programmed manually but it is a pain. Using chirp is much more seamless. Overall a good started radio set and works well for my use in airsoft and backpacking. ... show more

I am a newbie at amateur radio. This radio and antenna package was recommended to me by an old timer who helped me get started. Right now, i have a GRMS license while preparing for my Technician license, and I am using the radio as a learning tool. I am using open source CHIRP software to program the radio, so that it is configured in a way that I do not violate any FCC regulations. Programming in this fashion requires a programming cable which is not included in the kit. The ABBREE foldable antenna is much, much better than the rubber duck that comes with the package. It works better both folded and unfolded. I have received base stations more than 13 miles away with the ABBREE over hilly suburban terrain, which I cannot do with the rubber duck. If you are going to use this package with a plate or mag carrier, I recommend you also purchase a short coax cable for threading the horizontal, as the foldable antenna will become damaged if you try to force it to fold any way but longitudinally. ... show more

The Baofeng Uv-5r is a bargain for what little they cost. But they do have reputation for being very difficult and tricky to program, as do all of the Chinese ham radios. This seems to be the only real fault of the radio. It's easy to use but difficult to program. Once one gets into the rhythm of programming, it becomes less difficult. ... show more
