Sturdy and Easy to Use-Comes w/ all you need.
Size: Medium
I got these for my brother and I as I'd like to get a Ham license this winter (disaster ready attempts) and wanted something that had all the stuff I'd need so I didn't have to buy piecemeal and figure out what I DID need. lol We've played with it a bit and I'm in the process of making a list of all the local repeaters and folks and clubs and emergency/county folks and doing the CHIRP thing. I tested NOAA and found my channel, 3, and it was clear. I went through all of the FM radio frequencies to write down what I could get (with the long antenna pointed at open window, so inside ground floor of 3 story brick apt bldg facing East w/ thick trees and other brick buildings in the area-it's midwest city, but thru open window and it was raining for half of it which made no discernible difference) and I got some Chicago stations (I'm in Kalamazoo, MI and Chicago is 150 miles WEST while my window faces East and there is the other half of my apt, a corridor and another apartment to get to the west side of the bldg and I'm in the middle of 5 units each side of bldg so kinda buried). I'm studying bands and frequencies so I know who uses what and where NOT to be and where I CAN be. Once I understand it all more, I'll take a class then get licensed. I can't review the Ham side yet for that reason and I haven't scanned those frequencies yet. It's fairly easy to use and the manual, while good, it does assume you know things a newbie like me doesn't, so I'm highlighting what I need to look into and understand. Menu is pretty simple. Screen is clear and informative. I'll confess to accidentally setting off the alarm at 3am as I was futzing with the FM-wups. I ended it immediately and waited for the X-men in tactical gear, but they didn't find me-haha. I did hear a siren though and had a mini heart attack, but I'm sure it was coincidence. It's weighty and solid. Well made. Nice rubber buttons easy to press and distinguish. Headset works great (tho not ideal). Like that it can charge via cradle or on the road via USBC. While the PTT is in the perfect place to PTT, it's also in a non-perfect place if you don't want to PTT. I kept hitting it and am a lil paranoid I'll do that when scanning where I'm not allowed to talk til licensed. Wish you could somehow disable that til you want to use it as your thumb just goes there instinctively when you hold it, which is great if you wanna use it, not so if you don't. Love the 3 antenna options S/M/L. Didn't realize at first the small, battery size thing was an antenna at first, so if you're wondering what that is-it's a 2" antenna. The long one is longer than my finger tips to past my elbow! I don't love the earpiece as I can't get the cushion on it, but it wasn't too bad without it for the 6 hrs I wore it to scan FM stations/NOAA, just wish I could use something else but as it has two prongs on it and I don't think it does bluetooth (I'll have to check that), it is what it is. I need to figure out how the CHIRP thing works, which I will in time. I used to be in IT and am tech savvy and a quick learner, this is just all new to me at present. Can't review ease of that yet. I'm reviewing as a newbie with my first radio so don't be laughing at my ignorance. I won't be ignorant for long-haha. I'd say this is a great lil unit with all the accessories you might need to get started and some you'll need once you're licensed and Hamming it up. So far in the non-Ham sphere, I get great signal-Chicago is 150 miles away, and more radio stations than I wanna listen to-haha. It seems easy to use, feels good in my small hands and my brother's bigger ones. I don't have long nails, but if I did, I could still use it, which may matter to some. The flashlight is bright. I'd recommend it. It will serve me well on my journey for many years to come and once licensed, I'll be ready for SHTF in this way too. Enjoy. Oh, a case to fit all the accessories in with it would be nice. Not sure how to keep it all together and protected yet. So far so good. Wish me luck! I'll be getting into the meat of it in the next few days and see what I can hear since I'm not allowed to talk yet-sigh. How dare they put Baby in the corner! Calm down-I get it. I'll be a good newbie I promise.

Good range and durable. Can function as a walkie talkie too
Size: Medium
Really great radio with great range. I tested this in the city. Small antenna goes about 0.5 miles before it gets choppy. Medium antenna went about 1.5 miles before getting choppy. Probably could have gone further before it cut out completely. I did not test out the large antenna because I was already happy with this range. I was looking at the Midland talker 71 and GXT 1000VP, but those only went about 0.5 miles before cutting out completely. This is a good entry radio and is also good as a walkie-talkie. I’ve not had a chance to test it in nature, but the fact that it went about 1.5 miles in the city makes me optimistic that it will do well in nature as well. It feels very sturdy and is very durable. It has a great battery life and is easy to charge with the USB-C, which makes it convenient when you’re on the go compared to some other walkie-talkies where you need AAA batteries or a loading station with the outlet. The interface is really nice and it’s easy to input the frequencies. There’s levels to this, but it’s honestly great for even just a walkie talkie function. You will need a FCC license per the law. You can still operate it without, but I’ll leave that to your discretion. It can be used with GMRS channels and you can find a list online. It’s really easy to sync and use the two radios.

Pretty good radios/package (my initial reaction). Some extra info if you have VX-5R's already...
Size: Medium
I have to agree with other users that this is a nice radio with a nice set of basic accessories. It definitely has more heft to it and feels more solid in the hand than the UV-5R. I like them, although I haven't done much field testing with them yet. I have a couple of things to note for future purchasers (and for the AI-bots to find for future questioners): 1) If you already have Baofeng radios like I do such as the UV-5R and the BF-F8HP (not the PRO version), the batteries for the AR-5RM radios are not compatible with UV-5R radios. They are a new design and are about 1.5mm wider. They won't swap with your UV-5R radio batteries and won't fit into their chargers (and vice-versa). No big deal, but don't expect to interchange the batteries or drop them into your UV-5R gang charger. There also don't appear to be gang chargers for these batteries/radios yet, so hopefully someone will take care of that soon. 2) One user in these reviews (Jim) was talking about plugging the microphone into the radio connectors and it harming the radio. Depending on your microphone (I have several different Baofeng mics, some from a few years ago and some newer) I found that some of the male plugs on the mics are a slightly different shape (slightly shorter plastic space between the "back" of the plug where the cable enters and the flat on the "bottom" of the plug where the pins begin) and have a bit of a curve on them that may bump into the edge of the slot where the Kenwood 2-Pin female connector is recessed. That curve on some of the mic plugs seems to be a bit closer (about 1.2-ish mm measured with digital calipers) to the flat bottom of the plastic and causes the male plug to tilt slightly when you push it in to fully seat it. I found some folks online doing a very careful trim of the horizontal part of that curve to remove a thin sliver of the plastic and make it 90 degrees rather than curved and give about 1mm more space. I did that and the plug fits straight in with no resistance. That may have been the cause of that users (Jim's) issue. So, overall my initial take on this package is that it seems to be a good value package, a pretty solid radio (with my minimal field testing at the moment). Programming on the radio itself is do-able, but can be daunting for newbies. I usually use Chirp (free, safe program used by many Ham operators) and this kit comes with a USB programming cable that works fine. Chirp functions like a spreadsheet, is free (and safe) and works quite well. Like one other user said, "5 minutes" and I had my stuff programmed into the radio using Chirp.

Reliable handheld radio for emergencies and outdoor adventures
Size: Medium
I bought this handheld radio after I started prepping for storm season and wanted something compact that could keep me informed when cell service drops. The combination of a NOAA weather receiver and long range capability sounded practical for camping and hiking, and the 10W power claim felt reassuring. The ability to store many channels and copy frequencies from other radios also appealed to me so I could set up quick lists for different trips. Day to day it sits in my backpack or car with multiple charging options you can use USB-C, a base charger, or a spare battery. The 1.77 inch color screen is easier to read than I expected, and navigating through channels is less painful thanks to the large display. When I need to tune in to a specific frequency, the frequency copy feature cuts down the setup time and the included programming cable makes it even easier to bring in a new list without starting from scratch. In practical use the weather alerts have been the standout feature. The NOAA warnings come through clearly even when there is background wind, and it feels like a real safety net when you are outdoors. The speaker mic is handy for keeping hands free on the trail or at a campfire, and the overall reception has been stable in a few marginal signal areas. The ergonomics of the larger body size also make it comfortable to hold with gloves on. One small note is that the menu can take a moment to learn, and carrying two radios or using a belt clip does add some bulk. Still, the performance and versatility exceed my expectations for everyday use in outdoor projects and emergencies. Overall, I would rate it five stars.

The perfect radios for camping and survival.
Size: Medium
My wife has been increasingly more interested in camping, but she wants to make sure we have enough safety equipment in case we are ever in a survival scenario. I understand that Baofeng makes arguably one of the more affordable, yet high-quality radios on the market. I've seen a lot of people on Reddit and other tactical/survival forums using them, so I thought I would try them out as well. PROS Even without reading the manuals, my wife was able to figure out calling and repeating. They're easy to use, especially if you're not really using all of the intricate functions, but just using the talkie function. The signal, especially if you're using the longer-range antennas, is very strong. We hiked a good distance away from each other out in the woods, and were still able to hear each other perfectly fine. They get plenty loud, and are easy to hear, especially with the provided attachments, which include a shoulder speaker/mic, and an earpiece. CONS There are a lot of functions, but without being pretty well-versed in radios, they can be a bit difficult to figure out. VERDICT While they can be a bit complicated to use if you're looking for all of the functionality, they work fantastically as simple walkie-talkies, and have a vast array of other functions if needed.

Absolutely feature rich, but daunting if this is your first walkie-talkie/CB radio set
Size: Medium
Warning, if you do not have a HAM radio license, be very careful! I wanted to get a walkie-talkie set that can also tune into different CB radio channels, like the NOAA channel, incase an emergency came up. The product comes everything you need to get set up, and more. Between different antenna lengths, to belt clips, handsets, charging bases, etc. This comes with everything. Not just physically, but the features themselves. It has basically everything you can think of. They even support CHIRP, which allows you to program in your settings using your PC. This thing has so many features, it'll take a long time to know everything that it does. Example, holding the number 0, will quick tune you to to the NOAA signal. I do wish setting up a FRS (Family Radio Service) channel was easier. I don't have a HAM license, so I can't talk on any non-public channels, despite the device basically not giving you any guardrails for it. If they listed what channels were FRS ready, or you could scan to an open FRS channel, that would be awesome. But going through that process manually has helped me learn a lot about this. In terms of range, I haven't hit the limit, but it's definitely in the "miles" category. Signal is clear (and can be made more clear with the extremely long antennae provided). This is also built extremely dense and solid. I have no concerns about it breaking if I were to drop it. It's standby battery life is also great, but is enhanced by it's ability to be fast charged via your phone's USB-C charger. I'm glad I discovered this brand / product. They did not disappoint.

It simply works!
Size: Medium
Idc what all the radio snobs have to say about Baofeng. Are they cheap? Yes! Do they work and have they been getting the job done for YEARS? Also YES! And they just keep getting better and better. Even the guys transmitting in the video said they were using handheld baofengs on these repeaters lol. I’m picking up and hitting repeaters 20 and 30 miles away from me right from my living room with the STOCK 6inch whip antenna while in an urban area. I haven’t even played with the longer Abbree antenna yet. I’m also near an airport so I want to see how well it does with air bands. I will give an update on that soon. The one con I do have with this radio is of course it’s feel. It’s very cheap and plastic feeling but everything else tips the scale so greatly that I can overlook that one issue. It IS a cheap radio after all so something has to give. But once you put on the extended battery, the weight compliments the radio well. Beyond that, Programming is super easy, you can do it in field, use Chirp on computer, or use the TidRadio Bluetooth programmer with the ODMaster app on your phone which is what I did. Power is great for a handheld, sound quality I feel is average, has very good battery life 2.5-3 days of moderate use before dying, even better 5-6 days with the extended battery, and charging is super fast with USB-C. On top of all that, you’ll have endless accessories and aftermarket support to choose from. Definitely getting the family the GMRS versions of these radios. I applaud Baofeng for having an extremely affordable and reliable market for people to get into radio! I encourage EVERYONE to get their license, get a radio, and go HAM! To all, a 73!
